I've got a young Rogue I rolled up a couple weeks ago and I thought I'd get some advice while he's still in his 30 days since I've never played a character that ambushed from hiding with a sword. Initially I had him at 2x Shield with no Dodge training, but figured it was better to 1x in each so I switched it... I haven't had him hunting since I made the change, but I'll see how much of a difference it makes.

My main concern is if the CMAN training is going to be worth it or if those points would be better spent getting more dodge training... at the moment, TPs are tight, but I have his stats allocated for growth so that'll change eventually. Any other glaring mistakes that are pointed out will be appreciated.

1x shield, 1x dodge and stick with a medium or a small shield and you'll be fine.

No, you'll want the combat maneuver training for the AS boost if nothing else. Later on down the road you may even want to train maneuvers above the standard 1x. You are 2x in ambush, keep at it if you over hunt a lot, if not you can let it slide down to 1.5 or 1x.

I would try to 1x cm and get smastery since you plan to ambush. I 1x dodge, shield and armor and use a medium shield. Did a test with small through large. Decided the DS range compare to the block bonus was a wash between small and medium. The large was not worth it at all.

Does smastery make much of a differance for rangers other then reducing RT for sneaking since we have 601 and 617?

I thought about getting it but settled on Shield Bash in the end....

Against most things you won't notice a difference, smastery can be useful against the extremely, and annoyingly, perceptive creatures though.
