Suddenly, bright viridian lightning lashes in all directions from a point in midair. A rift opens at that point, and Vathon steps out of the rift. Twisting magical energy halos Vathon for a moment before fading away as the rift vanishes.
Vathon exhales deeply.
>look vath
You see Lord Vathon Kel'Driss Faendryl the Basilican Summoner.
He appears to be a Dark Elf.
He is average height and appears to be wizened with age. He has silver-flecked black eyes and dusky skin. He has very short, thick white hair. He has an angular face and narrow pointed ears.
He is in good shape.
He is holding a hollow soulstone wand in his right hand.
He is wearing a sleek silver pentagram necklace, some sigil-incised deep black Faendryl robes with wide crimson-banded sleeves, a time-worn ashen leather satchel, a twisted mithril signet ring, a scorched wyrwood rattle, and a pair of black leather boots.
Vathon twists his head slightly, cracking his neck. He looks relieved.
Vathon nods slowly.
Vathon says, "Greetings everyone."
Vathon asks, "How is everyone tonight?"
Vathon nods slowly.
Vathon asks, "I take it everyone is here for the soulstone wand giveaway?"
Vathon tilts his soulstone wand side to side, making the light play off it.
Vathon rubs his chin thoughtfully.
Vathon gestures at a hollow soulstone wand.
A dull grey beam snakes out toward a hollow soulstone wand and engulfs it! Instantly, the soulstone wand is reduced to dust.
Vathon laughs softly, trying to hide his amusement.
Vathon exclaims, "Necromancy is another topic!"
Vathon says, "In any case."
Vathon says, "My name is Lord Vathon Kel'Driss Faendryl."
Malkave softly says, "Destroyer of insanely rare artifacts should be your official title."
Vathon says, "I am have travelled from Ta'Faendryl to share some knowledge with everyone tonight."
Vathon says, "As you may or may not know..."
Vathon says, "This year marks the Tenth Anniversary since Lord Korvath released the Enchiridion Valentia, Common Language Edition."
Vathon adopts an agreeable expression.
Vathon says, "It feels like merely an instant."
Vathon says, "In those ten years, I can say that now, more than ever, the interest in Demonic Summoning is on the upswing."
Vathon says, "It is in that vein that we hope to educate not only the Sorcerer, but the greater whole."
Vathon nods at Malisai.
Vathon says, "For only with knowledge and understanding, there may be a day where you can walk with your demon freely without persecution."
Vathon nods slowly.
Vathon selects a sigil-chased dark leather enchiridion from a time-worn ashen leather satchel.
Vathon says, "Tonight, I've brought with me a stack of books."
Vathon idly runs a finger along the enchiridion, and a faint sigil at the edge of the page pulses briefly with a hazy black glow.
Vathon asks, "Has anyone had the pleasure to read from one of these?"
As Vathon raises his dark leather enchiridion, it emits a low hum, sending wispy tendrils of crackling dark energy crawling down Vathon's arm.
(a variety of yes and no answers ensue)
Vathon nods slowly.
Vathon says, "After tonight, you will."
You remove a sigil-chased dark leather volume from in your tenebrous black cloak.
Vathon says, "The one Kastrel holds is the original version released ten years ago."
Vathon says, "This here in my hand is a special Tenth Anniversary edition."
Vathon says, "It does a few extra things the original doesn't."
Vathon says, "The majority of the book remains unchanged, however, I added a few... personal touches."
Vathon says, "Now then."
Vathon says, "As it goes, this will be the first of several events. Six in total."
Vathon says, "I will introduce a particular Valence each time, starting with Grik'Tyr tonight."
Vathon says, "Read a few excerpts from the Enchiridion, ask if anyone has any particular comments or questions, and finish the night with a lesson on uncommon runes."
Vathon says, "For this entire series, you may only receive one book, and one teaching."
Vathon says, "Due to the inherit magic in the Tenth Anniversary edition, your book will only work for you..."
Starcrye asks, "We can sit through the readings and choose not to get the lesson though?"
Speaking to Starcrye, Vathon says, "Absolutely."
Durakar asks, "Will it be the same book available at each gathering? Or will they be slightly different?"
Vathon says, "Same book."
Nindon asks, "And we can get a book at one gathering and learn a rune at a different one?"
Vathon nods at Nindon.
Lihai asks, "Will you tell us what the lesson will be for each ahead of time so we can decide if we wish to be taught this evening?"
Speaking to Lihai, Vathon says, "Yes, tonight will be Grik'tyr."
Vathon says, "The next will be Lorae'tyr."
Vathon says, "Finally, ending with Shien'tyr."
Vathon says, "After, we start again."
Demietria asks, "Have we the choice to teach our knowledge to others?"
Vathon looks over at Demietria and shakes his head.
Vathon says, "Everyone is entitled to one uncommon rune."
Vathon says, "One for the entire series of events."
Vathon says, "I will also note if you currently know five uncommon runes, I cannot help you unless you forget one."
Demietria asks, "Will you have a schedule of upcoming events posted?"
Speaking to Demietria, Vathon says, "Yes, much like this one, there will be ample... warning."
Vathon grins wryly.
Malkave softly says, "If you know five uncommon runes... I vote we all get sticks and beat you until some candy pops out or maybe a few runestones."
Speaking to Malkave, Vathon says, "I know them all..."
Vathon grins slowly.
Speaking softly to Vathon, Malkave asks, "Might I borrow two dozen sticks?"
Aloana offers Malkave a wooden stick.
Malkave declines Aloana's offer.
Vathon grins.
Malkave softly says, "Okay, fine, fine.. bluff totally called."
Vathon says, "So, let us get started."
Vathon says, "As you may or may not know, this book here was originally written in the year Fifty-One Zero Three."
Vathon idly runs a finger along the enchiridion, and a faint sigil glowing softly at the corner disappears into the darkness.
Vathon says, "However..."
Vathon says, "It is based on a much older version. A version written by Faendryl for Faendryl, in the year Forty Four Zero Seven."
Vathon says, "The fine Lady Hilthia Waterlyon graciously and tediously translated the Faendryl to Common Language."
Vathon says, "However, the Faendryl, we have other designations and names for the Valences and their inhabitants, so it was deemed necessary to use terms recognized by all races of Sorcerers."
Vathon says, "Such, the Common Language Edition is born."
Vathon says, "Grik'Tyr is the valence we'll be focusing on tonight."
Vathon turns to the next page of his dark leather enchiridion.
Vathon says, "As I read from the first chapter..."
Vathon recites:
"Perhaps the best-documented of all the valences, Grik'Tyr is marked by endless plains of boulders and slopes of scree. Although no mountain ranges have been charted, the terrain is uneven and precipitous cliffs are not uncommon. Charts stored in the repository show vast spiderwebs of shallow canyons cutting through the center of the explored region. Most are inaccessible by trail or pass, but easily navigated if a sorcerer enters the valence in their midst."
Vathon glances down at his dark leather enchiridion and stares at the pages for what seems like an eternity before slowly mouthing the words and phrases in understanding.
Vathon says, "So the first explorers of Grik'Tyr found a dry and arid place."
Vathon says, "No water has been observed on Grik'Tyr either, nor weather patterns of note."
Vathon says, "Consequently, two types of demons were found to inhabit Grik'tyr."
Vathon says, "The Grik, which lends its name to the Valence, and the Imp."
Vathon says, "As such, and as your new book will tell you, the Grik are winged creatures, with taloned hands."
Vathon says, "The Grik also have the inate ability to fly in their valence, however, such is NOT the case here..."
Vathon says, "I'd imagine that would be cause for concern if they could."
Vathon lightly rubs the edges of his dark leather enchiridion, evoking a soft chorus of whispery sighs from its pages.
Vathon says, "The Grik are tribal creatures, and four tribes have been observed on Grikt'Tyr..."
Vathon says, "They are the Grik'trak, the Grik'mlar, the Grik'pwal, and the Grik'tval."
Vathon says, "And it says here that the first Grik to be summoned to our plane was by Abdullahi Hazalred Faendryl. I know not of this person, however, much kudos belong to his family."
Vathon turns to the next page of his dark leather enchiridion.
Vathon runs his finger wander idly over the pages of the enchiridion, and after a moment an unseen rune flares briefly upon the writing -- casting forth the image of a shadowy winged creature soaring briefly over the dark leather enchiridion's cover before fading away.
Vathon glances at a sigil-chased dark leather enchiridion in his hand.
Vathon says, "That was a Grik."
Vathon says, "As I said, this book is quite powerful in the hands of a Sorcerer."
Vathon says, "I suggest once receiving your copy, you figure out how useful it can be."
Vathon says, "Moving on, the Imp is the only other inhabitant we've studied in the Grik'Tyr valence."
Vathon says, "They are a diminutive creature, humanoid in stature, though rather slender and completely hairless."
Vathon says, "The curious imp seems to have no facial features from afar, however, upon closer examination, seem to mimic that which is studying them."
Vathon turns to the next page of his dark leather enchiridion.
Vathon says, "As I read about an encounter with an Imp from the first explorer named Bolotyn Xendrem Faendryl..."
Vathon recites:
"Shyrelm turned to speak with me and I spied the imp over his shoulder. It bounded to a tall urn formed of grey-streaked marble. As I watched, his torso bloated and his arms, which had been raised over his head, began to meld and lengthen, then widen at the palms. Before I knew it, there was an exact copy of the urn where the imp had been. I bid Shyrelm to look, but my voice was a startle and the imp was there again, cowering in the shadow of the container...""
Vathon says, "So, we learn that the imp can take many forms."
Vathon says, "On Grik'Tyr there is a hierarchy of sorts.."
Vathon says, "The Grik appear to have dominance over the Imp, and when they are summoned and in the presence of one another, this dominance can be observed."
Vathon asks, "Has anyone had the displeasure of seeing this first hand?"
You nod at Vathon.
Allereli nods at Vathon.
Vathon says, "Especially one this plane."
You softly say, "Though I might not call it a displeasure."
Vathon says, "On."
You softly say, "It was fairly interesting."
Speaking to you, Vathon says, "Listen to a hundred imp screech at the same time over a single Grik, you will find it distasteful."
Vathon says, "As such, the Sorcerer who is controlling the imp must be careful, for it is much easier to lose control when a Grik is present."
Vathon says, "The imp was first summoned by Shyrelm Darhlith Faendryl."
Vathon says, "'You can read more accounts about the Grik'Tyr valence in your book."
Vathon nods.
Vathon closes his dark leather enchiridion.
Vathon begins to trace his fingers in a slow, circular spiral around the dark leather enchiridion, and its surface comes alive with frenetic slivers of blue-black energy. After a moment, the essence fades away, and its hue darkens, pulsing briefly like a black heart before returning to normal.
Vathon nods slowly.
Vathon put a sigil-chased dark leather enchiridion in his Faendryl robes.
Vathon says, "Now then."
Vathon asks, "Was anyone interested in learning an uncommon rune from Grik'tyr?"
(ensue dozens of nods)
Vathon nods slowly.
Vathon says, "You don't have to raise your hand."
Demietria asks, "But we can get the book this evening?"
Vathon nods at Demietria.
Vathon removes an enruned wyrwood rod from in his Faendryl robes. (wonder what this was?)
Vathon says, "I suppose this will be unnecessary."
Vathon put an enruned wyrwood rod in his Faendryl robes.
Vathon says, "So, we'll go in order then."
Vathon points at Malisai.
Vathon asks, "Do you wish to learn tonight?"
Malisai says, "Yes."
Vathon nods.
Vathon asks, "Which?"
Vathon says, "Grik'tyr-imp or Grik'tyr-grik."
Malisai says, "Imp please."
Vathon nods at Malisai.
Vathon takes Malisai aside for a quick lesson in demonic summoning.
Malisai says, "Thank you."
Malisai nods at Vathon.
Speaking to Malisai, Vathon asks, "A book?"
Malisai says, "Please."
Vathon selects a sigil-chased dark leather enchiridion from a time-worn ashen leather satchel.
Vathon glances at Malisai briefly before he inscribes a few words inside the cover of his enchiridion.
Vathon offers Malisai a sigil-chased dark leather enchiridion.
Malisai accepts Vathon's dark leather enchiridion.
Malisai smiles.
Malisai says, "A fine legacy."
Malisai nods at Vathon.
Vathon nods at Malisai.
Vathon says, "Enjoy."
(this teaching proceeds for quite a while, offering books even to those who decline. Now, from a 1st person perspective)
Vathon points at you!
Speaking softly to Vathon, you ask, "No rune this evening, I am considering others. A book, perhaps?"
Speaking softly to Vathon, you say, "Also, a question regarding the books."
Vathon raises an eyebrow.
Speaking softly to Vathon, you say, "Are they usable by non-sorcerers? Lizythia is a student of mine, and while she cannot summon, it is important she learns of the art."
Speaking to you, Vathon says, "No."
Vathon selects a sigil-chased dark leather enchiridion from a time-worn ashen leather satchel.
Vathon glances at you briefly before he inscribes a few words inside the cover of his enchiridion.
Vathon offers you a sigil-chased dark leather enchiridion. Click ACCEPT to accept the offer or DECLINE to decline it. The offer will expire in 30 seconds.
You accept Vathon's offer and are now holding a sigil-chased dark leather enchiridion.
>look my ench
Encircled by a series of ten silver sigils, the enchiridion is bound by well-polished leather of a solid ebon hue. Within the very heart of the central spiral of sigils is an intricate crest--that of a solid steel pentacle upon a field of grey, the lustrous metal stained a deep scarlet. Arcing designs of silver wreath the spine of the enchiridion, and a small depression dips gracefully along the upper edges, bordered by glimmering shards of faceted onyx.

--- Enchiridion Valentia ---
The Tenth Anniversary Common Language Edition by Lord Vathon Kel'Driss Faendryl, Released in 5113
Originally Translated to Common by Lady Hilthia Waterlyon Faendryl in 5103
To Kastrel, May your Shadow never leave the Heart of the Art ~ Vathon
Notes about this edition:
This abridged edition of the Enchiridion Valentia was translated to Common in the year 5103 and is known as the First Common Edition. It is based on the seventeenth Faendryl edition released in the year 4407, abridged by the Scholars of the Valences in 5103.
The initial chapters are not released as part of this edition, as the Faendryl consider the wider population of sorcerers unable to appreciate the nuances of the art of summoning and interplanar travel.
Faendryl designations of demons and valences have been maintained, as these are the terms most recognized by all sorcerers, regardless of their race, and the terms tend to be untranslatable into Common tongue.
(Vathon proceeds to finish up)
Vathon selects a sigil-chased dark leather enchiridion from a time-worn ashen leather satchel.
Vathon glances at Nattor briefly before he inscribes a few words inside the cover of his enchiridion.
Vathon offers Nattor a sigil-chased dark leather enchiridion.
Nattor accepts Vathon's dark leather enchiridion.
Speaking to Vathon, Nattor says, "Thank you very much."
Vathon says, "Be well, folks."
Speaking softly to Vathon, you ask, "A minor suggestion, before you leave?"
Heathyr nods at Vathon.
Vathon nods at Heathyr.
Vathon glances at you.
Speaking softly to Vathon, you say, "Considering the travels required for many who do not reside in Illistim, it may be worth consulting with the guild to reopen the Heart of the Art, which has outlets in all major cities."
Speaking to Vathon, Durakar says, "Safe travels. If timing allows I shall be at your other gatherings as well. Would hate for anything amiss to go on."
Speaking softly to Nattor, Lizythia says, "Thanks to you, as well."
Speaking softly to Vathon, you say, "In fact, the Solhaven nexus is still open, for whatever reason."
Rolfard agrees with you.
Speaking to you, Vathon says, "Again, you assume I have control of such things..."
>say ::vathon Merely a suggestion, one worth considering
Speaking softly to Vathon, you say, "Merely a suggestion, one worth considering."
You bow to Vathon.
Vathon nods slowly.
Vathon says, "'Stay safe all."
Lord Vathon just went north.
Overall, a great event! Haven't quite figured out the special features on the Valentia yet, but I hope to. In fact, I will probably make a post discussing what I already knew, which I shared for most in attendance.

heh i knew someone would suggest the heart of the art.
feel like maybe that is asking a bit much. we're already getting a lot out of this. and we have 740. if you're too young to use 740, travelling is MUCH easier than it used to be. you can get from RR to EN anywhere from 35-70 minutes depending on boat/ferry timing
not to mention they ripped off 740 with chronomages.

I only suggested it because there were a few people who were specifically talking about how they did not like traveling, and wanted to see if they could be held in different cities.
Also, the Heart of the Art is awesome.
