So, my character just hit 30, which means two things:
1) It is perhaps time to start figuring out what I should be doing to upgrade my equipment
2) There are all these little things I have to begin sorting or trying to organize and I am trying to figure out the best way to do that.
So, question time:
1) I currently have a 4x Runestaff (nothing else about it, it's just a 4x runestaff), and some 4x full leather. Nothing else of note, enhancive wise or anything.
What should I consider getting and/or upgrading? I know this is a very broad question, but I'm trying to get a sense of priorities here. The universe of available upgrades has significantly expanded during the time I was gone, or so it seems, and I never paid that much attention to that part of the game anyway, so I get rapidly lost when I look into getting upgrades.
2) Speaking of: Experience with enhancive items: How expensive are they to recharge, how quickly, in your experience do X number of charges last, etc etc? What's a good place to start? Again, I start to get overwhelmed with the options here...
3) Scroll Infusion: How do people handle the clutter of scrolls? Just hold them in the locker and pull them out to use them before a hunt, or? I'm currently experimenting with carrying my bag of alchemy supplies with me and keeping it phased because going back to get it in my locker before working on alchemy is a bit of a pain. I guess I could keep the scrolls I'd use most often in this bag?
4) Runestones: Currently, I prepare smooth stones and draw the runes on them. Is this still the most economical method? Also, can smooth stones be dyed or otherwise differentiated? I'd like to color code my runestones the way I color code my reagant jars...
5) Speaking of reagant jars, is that tent that sells the jars that hold 50 still around? If so, where?
6) An alchemy question: Can one create a recipe that one has not been taught so long as one can perform the necessary steps? If I, say, wanted to make an Aish'vrak potion but have not been taught it, could I do so just by following the steps?
Thanks in advance...

I strongly suggest getting an enhancive/fusion runestaff. With Fusion you can build your own staff, which can be expensive, but you get exactly what you want. Aura, Wisdom, max mana, spirit regen (if you're CoL), harness power, spell aim (if you bolt), and mana regen are all good properties to look for. Don't forget that temp ensorcell also works on enhancive staves, so you can have another sorcerer cast on your staff until you can cast the spell yourself. Another good off-the-shelf option is the 4x/4x acuity staff sold at the recent Solhaven fest and RtCF. It cost 1.5 mil (I think), and can also be permanently ensorcelled.

It depends what the enhancive is. Anywhere from 1000 to 100,000 bounty points. A +1 to spirit regen costs about 27,000. See the list above of standard enhancives that help sorcerers. If you want to enhance any specific skill or spell, look at krakiipedia at the skill/spell description and see what stats/skills affect it and focus on those. For example I like to skin and forage, so I look for first aid and survival enhancives.
Always remove/stow your enhancives when you are not using them. This will greatly lengthen time between charging.

I keep all my found/purchased scrolls on a mule until I need them, then unlock and charge whatever spell I need. I have a specific container for scrolls and runestones and keep about 50 scrolls on me at any time. Scrolls weigh 1/2 pound each, so 50 scrolls is 25 lbs for demonology lore planning. I would never carry my alchemy supplies around, those go on a separate mule. You can do this on a smaller scale without additional characters but I would definitely recommend premium lockers with CHE capacity.
>4) Runestones: Currently, I prepare smooth stones and draw the runes on them. Is this still the most economical method? Also, can smooth stones be dyed or otherwise differentiated? I'd like to color code my runestones the way I color code my reagant jars...
Yes, it's still the most economical, and you can dye them. You can also leave them as is and use the rummage verb (rummage my [container] runestone [runestone name])
>5) Speaking of reagant jars, is that tent that sells the jars that hold 50 still around? If so, where?
I believe it has departed for now, but expect to find higher capacity jars at fests and perhaps the tent will make another round in the future.
>6) An alchemy question: Can one create a recipe that one has not been taught so long as one can perform the necessary steps? If I, say, wanted to make an Aish'vrak potion but have not been taught it, could I do so just by following the steps?
yes, as long as you have the ranks you can make it. Aish'vrak is a weird recipe in that it is low in rank, but needs an ingredient (crystal core essence) that requires more ranks to make than the recipe level.

Re: Equipment and other Miscellany on 07/12/2013 02:30 PM CDT
Let me start with a disclaimer. My experience may not be "typical", and it's far from "optimal". But here are my personal observations.
<<<1) I currently have a 4x Runestaff (nothing else about it, it's just a 4x runestaff), and some 4x full leather. Nothing else of note, enhancive wise or anything>>>
You don't need to upgrade anything. Off-the-shelf 4x equipment is viable from 10 to 100. In fact, when stuff starts disarming you may be happier with a collection of 4x staves you like to use, rather than one uber staff of doom that will set you back tens of millions if you lose it. Armor is a better investment, in my opinion. You can start working on a suit of leathers by gradually getting it enchanted up to 7x, getting it lightened when the opportunity presents itself, adding resistance, padding, etc.
<<<2) Speaking of: Experience with enhancive items: How expensive are they to recharge, how quickly, in your experience do X number of charges last, etc etc? What's a good place to start? Again, I start to get overwhelmed with the options here...>>>
Enhancives are also optional. You don't need them. They may make things easier, or allow you to do things you couldn't otherwise be able to do...but no well-trained character actually needs them. I have a few minor enhancives on some of my characters, and I appreciate them. But they're not something I'd go looking to purchase, unless I had a specific need. Most of the ones I use were box-found, or purchased from a merchant (like at Ebon Gate). The cost of charging them will suck up a ton of bounty points. But if you don't plan on using them for anything else, I guess that's not a problem.
Advice about removing and stowing enhancives is probably wise. But I find it to be rather tedious, so I leave most of mine on, with the exception of a special pair of gloves that can't be recharged. Those I make sure to stow when not in use.
<<<3) Scroll Infusion: How do people handle the clutter of scrolls? Just hold them in the locker and pull them out to use them before a hunt, or? I'm currently experimenting with carrying my bag of alchemy supplies with me and keeping it phased because going back to get it in my locker before working on alchemy is a bit of a pain. I keep all of my "waiting to be infused" scrolls in a bag in my locker. There are only a handful I use for myself on a regular basis (some of my alts use more). I don't phase them, because I want them available instantly. I keep most of my non-essential items in a locked box in my satchel, and phase it when I go into battle. Even without phasing anything, I'm not normally encumbered until I start picking up loot.
<<<4) Runestones: Currently, I prepare smooth stones and draw the runes on them. Is this still the most economical method? Also, can smooth stones be dyed or otherwise differentiated? I'd like to color code my runestones the way I color code my reagant jars...>>>
Smooth stones you prepare yourself are best, and can be purchased in the backroom of the General Store. They can be dyed, but only before you treat them with aish'vrak. I color-code all my runestones. For example, all my quiss'fyn runes are opalescent green. I have one of those fancy alchemy bags, but the "rummage" verb is trapped, so I can't "rummage" through it for specific runes. Not a problem, as long as I remember what color goes with what rune.
No clue about the reagent jars, so...
<<<6) An alchemy question: Can one create a recipe that one has not been taught so long as one can perform the necessary steps? If I, say, wanted to make an Aish'vrak potion but have not been taught it, could I do so just by following the steps?>>>
Aish'vrak potions are actually very easy. But I can never seem to keep up with my need, so I wind up just buying them. If you're determined, however, you can save a lot of silvers by making them yourself. They are easily the most expensive part of scroll infusion.

I'll tend to agree with Heather, with a slight modification...if you are going to spend money...dump it into armor...armor can't be stolen or disarmed, so no mater where you decide to be, you don't have to worry about it being lost or destroyed unless you make a very large mistake (take it off, drop it, and leave it somewhere.) It's a lofty goal, but I'd suggest shooting for 7x HCP leathers. Even with the randomization, the crit padding will save you more than just about any other thing you can pick up.
Anything else you might want to pick up will be dependent on where you plan to spend most/any of your time. Taking high end gear (including any enhancives that are also imbeddable) into OTF is dangerous, if not plain foolish until well...about 6 real time years from now based on your current level.
>How do people handle the clutter of scrolls?
I keep a hand full (20ish) readily available. The rest are either in a phased container or locker. If I plan to use it some day, I unlock it immediately...it probably isn't the most cost effective way...but it saves from annoying errors later. If you can figure out a way to organize the fresh ones that's up to you.
>Currently, I prepare smooth stones and draw the runes on them. Is this still the most economical method?
Yes, and any stone can be turned into a runestone, not just smooth. smooth stones are the cheapest because they have zero value otherwise, but most of the 'stone' gems are pretty cheap. If you don't stay in a place where dying is available...and to be honest I have no idea what the cost is of dyes...this is another good option for organization.

If you're purely concerned with pragmatism, I would suggest following this advice, but dropping your money on temporarily crit padded armor. As far as bang for your buck goes, permanently padded armor pales in comparison. I picked up a set of 2x masterfully crit padded double leathers for my cleric recently for like...500k I think? A set of incredibly (I think) padded 4x doubles went for a few million recently as well, which is absurdly cheap. Such an item with 'incredible' uses will most likely last you for as long as you play Gemstone. If you enjoy fetishizing your equipment and having things that are totally permanent, which is something I totally understand, then by all means go for it. If you just wanna protect yourself though, temp padding is the way to go.

Another thing to consider is where are you hunting.
I say this because you can get resistances added to your armor.
Example: I know you are a long way from hunting in Nelemar...but...I have befriended a warrior who has armor skills in puncture resistance. This gets added to my sorcerer's leathers. It helps reduce the damage from the charge maneuver in Nelemar. It will also help versus all puncture attacks including spike thorn.
If you were hunting fire mages, find a ranger friend and have fire resistance added to your leathers.
You don't need ubar gear to cap. It is nice to have, but for 7 years my sorcerer only wore 5x plain doubles and carried a 5x runestaff. He capped some time ago. It wasn't until recently did I purchase some nicer armor for him.
Recommendation. Find a rogue and have them make you a lockable container. Put your components in there if you wish to carry them with you. Then Phase 704 said container to reduce the weight.
Alchemy.................Evil.........life draining.....my sorcerer refuses to master it.
