From what I've heard. You could challenge a thief intown and not be charged. Well, I slapped a thief around somewhat for being caught. Didn't kill, but the thief obviously got caught again by someone else. They didn't want to play with the thief. I was charged with assault.
I still think the whole thing is humorous, but I was wondering about the challenge verb. I know if you kill intown. You will be charged but when I'm under challenge. I thought that would have protected me.

Theft and murder are special cases under the challenge system:
>challenge theft
While the challenge verb is to be used to settle consensual PvP disputes,
if you are caught stealing by someone, or kill someone without utilizing
the challenge system, that person will have a limited time to find you and
issue a challenge which you will have no option to refuse. They may choose
to challenge you to the death if they so desire.
In these instances, you are agreeing to PvP WHEN you engage in stealing or
murder. If you are not willing to risk death through these circumstances,
don't get caught stealing and don't kill other players nonconsensually.
Players cannot be wrongly challenged. If they are caught in the act by the
challenger, they are marked as the perpetrator.

I didn't want to kill the person but I do enjoy feinting, head butting, or other CMANS. I guess after I was finished and the thief ran off. I didn't pursue and they stole from someone that didn't mind jail. Which stinks because it placed me in the same boat. I still had fun through it all but I don't like killing them.

I wish there was a way to deal with repeat offenders. Someone that wants to constantly steal or kill. People don't normally kill but it happens. Maybe someone messed up with a box? Maybe someone in my shoes? Demonic is no more unless your trying to kiss a vathor. Maybe there should be a cool down period after a person steals and is caught?
1st offense: 5 minutes
2nd offense: 15 minutes
3rd offense: no paying fine, and must be in stocks.
4th offense: stocks with cool down
5th offense: banishment
That is only if your committing crimes in a cool down phase. There are times where PvP and stealing will take place. If your constantly getting caught. Then your not a real thief and more of a nuisance. Why should they just pay a simple fine and continue being a nuisance.
Don't get caught!! Hehe
These are only ideas.

As it was explained in a pickpocketing related mentors lecture..( Someone, somewhere I am sure has a log it was about 2 years ago, so I dont claim to have a perfect memory)
you may challenge someone with theft as the reason, this challenge cannot be refused as it is the risk you take for stealing. It is a challenge to the death if you so choose it to be. I beleive you have to have actually witnessed the theft, not just think they stole.
The problem I found when attempting to use this challenge is
1. You have to be standing in the room with them, and they have to be visible to issue it. but if you have it macrod I suppose you can issue it fast enough. I end up tryin to run the theif down and get them to stand still so I can issue the challenge.
2. As with any challenge there are still rules as to where they can occur, so if the theif just parks emself somewhere safe, or logs out for a while it effectively negates the challenge and your ability to have them arrested if they do not return soon or while you are around.
I really like this verb, but its basically only effective if the theif is willing to R/P along with it and actually participate even if they cannot refuse the challenge.
IF someone knows of some penalty or cost to a character for accepting a challenge then leaving, I would like to know as I am not aware of any. Perhaps implimenting one, such as if you log out after being challenged for theft, a warrent will be issued for your arrest? or something to not offer a free pass.
