Mimics - Boxie Critters! on 02/01/2011 04:00 PM CST
I would like to have boxes which turn out to be critters which magically transform themselves into exact replicas of treasure boxes and then attack whatever discovers or opens it. Could make it totally secondary to the lock and trap mechanism!
Then they could leave some special box behind with something unique to mimics in the box.

<< Gary Gygax's estate would sue you. >>
Why? If anyone, Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast would be the holders of any D&D-related copyrights today, if that's the point here. Even so, copyright doesn't protect ideas or concepts; it protects specific expressions or realizations of those ideas.
On the topic at hand, a mimic creature would be an amusing surprise, but they're still creatures so I don't see how they would have anything to do with lock picking or Lock Mastery.

Right; so I suspect that you wouldn't be able to use the term "mimics" when naming them. "Box chameleons" maybe?
"So, what does that green line on the graph represent?"
"Oh, that's the projection of a hypothetical offspring from a union between Sauron and Cruella de Ville; we use that as a baseline for determining character alignment."

Mimic is fine. See Naos' post as to why.

They come alive after an attempt to pick them. DUH!?!
