A box that tries to get up and run away from the person who tries to pick it up, and must be subdued in a suitable fashion to be gotten. This is the "trap".

I'm not sure I follow how you are imagining this. Does it require skill in Disarming Traps to take care of it? If not, is there a reason to consider it a trap as opposed to...(something else)? How does it work? Is it some kind of magic that has to be dispelled? Maybe you hack of the legs?

When Xayle took over as RR-Guru, there were some boxes around town. If you used Piercing Gaze, they were empty. Spiders jumped out, though. I'm fairly sure this was not the first time for such a thing to happen, but the time I recall it happening most recently. There should be some kind of code lurking around already to use in this manner though, which could significantly reduce the dev time (or not?).

Personally, I wouldn't mind if spiders jumped out of boxes as a sort of normal thing. If it only occurs when the box is opened and not when it is unlocked then no one is necessarily in hard RT at that time. (407 popping gives only cast RT and makes it fly open, so that's okay, too.)

Spider skillz can have some relation to lock difficulty or the creature which spawned them.

I know the spiders jump out after you're in town and the box is opened, rather than in the field when you are trying to retrieve the box, but it still might qualify as a "box with legs" in a general sense.

I imagine it as basically a box that when first attempted to be picked up triggers the trap, using the term loosely. How it functions mechanically would mostly be at the discretion of whoever was creating it.

I just found the concept amusing. A box that tries to evade being picked up. It sprouts legs or wings or something and tries to get away. If you take too long trying to "subdue" it, maybe it eventually grows into something dangerous, like a creature that you have to then kill and you can loot for the treasure that was once in the box. The longer you take to kill it, the less treasure it has. Maybe it spits coins at you ala thrown combat and you can gather small amounts of them off the ground. Maybe it can do 'special' attacks with certain gems or wands in it. Maybe if it has a weapon or shield inside it will use said item.

Seems pretty zany but definitely high on amusement factor.

My sense is these boxes should be made of a different material. That might give away the presence of the trap, but some kind of material that has awareness of the surroundings (like a less rare type of coraesine, etc).

I still like spiders in boxes, too.
