I was under the impression that the max trap was -480. Today, in the locksmith pool, I got this box (from a level 98 monstrosity):

Peering closely into the lock, you spy a miniature sky-blue glaes scarab wedged into the lock mechanism. The scarab's surface is etched with tiny runes that seem to writhe as the light strikes them.

It looks like an astoundingly difficult trap (about -482).

After disarming it, no update on beating my max trap:

ACHIEVEMENTS

Most difficult trap disarmed: -480

So....can one slightly misread trap strength?

Yes. Just like you can misread a lock value. Also note the use of the word about in the messaging...

AFAIK, -480 is the maximum trap you will find on any normally found box. Obviously, if a GM wanted to make a harder trap for some quest or special event, he could do so.

"So, what does that green line on the graph represent?"
"Oh, that's the projection of a hypothetical offspring from a union between Sauron and Cruella de Ville;
we use that as a baseline for determining character alignment."

To put into perspective for those that don't have a near capped locksmith, I successfully disarmed my first -480 trap at level 83-84 with a talented attempt (roll between 80 and 89) and self cast lore (tripled in disarm). I've been able to see them at least since my 70's, though (possibly could have seen them sooner, but never got handed a box from anywhere that ranges that high til I was in my 70's).

Also, there have been traps that ranged up to -600 in the past, though I believe traps that difficult were always outliers or came from invasions. Still, if someone reactivated an account that hasn't been active in 20+ years it's technically possible to run across one now.

Starchitin, the OG

A severed gnomish hand crawls in on its fingertips and makes a rude gesture before quickly decaying and rotting into dust. A gust of wind quickly scatters the dust.
