So I finally hit Level 10 in Lock Mastery, and I'm about ready to stop right there.
The big thing with Level is learning to calibrate calipers. I don't know why. Calipers aren't accurate--at least mine have never been--and calibration doesn't seem to help. If using low-grade materials for guild reps was allowed, then I could semi-see the point of calipers. It might be useful to know if you could use a steel lockpick instead of a vaalin one. Unfortunately, every time I try to use low-grade materials on easy locks, I am summarily informed that such materials are below someone of my skill level. The lowest material that I own and can use for guild reps is veniom. So it doesn't matter how easy the lock is. If it's easy, I have to stick with veniom. If it's difficult, vaalin. Maybe golvern. Those are the only ones that work for guild reps. Calipers haven't changed that.
You also get told that you can only calibrate if you measure and pick a box first or if you go to a workshop. This is a lie. You do not have to go to a workshop. If you try to calibrate in a workshop, nothing happens. You have to go to a toolbench IN the workshop. Fortunately, one of my fellow players told me this. Unfortunately, the guild didn't.
Also, for some reason, the guild hasn't bothered to explain how to get better at calibrating. You can't calibrate before you measure, but you get messages about how you didn't put enough effort into measuring a lock if you don't calibrate it...sufficiently? I guess? Apparently there's some standard you have to hit to get credit. Just doing the work isn't enough.
Honest to God, it's like math class--lots of rules that the teachers think you know already and thus don't bother to explain, followed by homework that I don't understand and that makes no sense. And I don't want to spend my time in-game being frustrated and angry because I can't seem to do what the guild wants.
I don't mind putting in repetitive work. I've done that many, many times in-game. I mind not knowing what I'm doing wrong or how to get better.

I'm not big on going into the math either but I have mastered lock mastery.
I believe in order to get 'credit' for a calibration rep you need to have a read that is reasonably close to the actual lock value. Because you are not good at this (10 in lock master) you will frequently get reads that are outside of the range needed to get a rep.
You will get better with more skill in lock mastery.
You can calibrate Calipers to be more accurate but... you aren't very good at this either when you start out.
I have a 2nd locksmith working through lock mastery that had 15 ranks in lock mastery. I was pleasantly surprised yesterday when I was able to calibrate my calipers to the point where they were "glowing with calibration". I honestly didn't expect that this was achievable at their current lock mastery skill.

To make sure I am not confusing different types of reps, can you post what it says you need to be doing when you type GLD? There are three types of caliper reps you could be assigned:
Master Reps: Calibrate calipers.
For this one you simply need to calibrate your calipers until they are well calibrated. I don't recall if you need to get them to 'glowing with calibration' or not but you definitely will have a lot of misses until you get credit. You can tell you are getting closer to the target as the RT to calibrate reduces.
Caliper reps (Measure): Open a decent lock after measuring with calipers.
For this one I believe the lock has to be a certain level of challenge for you. So if you measure an 'easy' lock and get the read dead on, you may still not get credit. Look for boxes with locks that are more challenging for you. There are folks out there that could probably math this to a specific value based on your training but just look for boxes that aren't way below your skill.
Caliper reps: (Calibrate): Calibrate calipers, after measuring and opening an easy lock.
- I believe for this one you get a rep every time. Yay!
