While I'm sure you want official confirmation..
The understanding that I have is that the overall "big nasty" threat (aka Althedeus) will be dealt with on January 9th. There will be some additional follow up events the following evening, of the 10th.
However, as these things go, I do not believe it will ALL be resolved. Also, if we fail and Elanthia is plunged into Chaos and Darkness and Death and Destruction, the following matters will be meaningless, and Cruxophim will be in charge.
There are several "baddies" who are unaccounted for: Raznel, Grishom Stone, Elithain Cross, Stephos DeArchos, Madelyne the Golem. Probably more. Cross is likely going to die a quick and painless death, but the others?
There is the matter of giving Walkar Wellington a bit of peace when this is all resolved. That is likely to happen on the 10th.
There is the matter of restoring the leadership to Wehnimer's Landing, what with the threat resolved.
There is the matter of several Empire provinces with a void in leadership after Cross' systematic removal of several leaders. Maybe some of Cross' former followers will be held accountable for some certain actions. I do not see this being resolved immediately.
There was intentionally a bunch of loose ends which (to paraphrase) Kenstrom suggested would be impetus for future events and circumstances.
However, I do see an end to the invasions and firebombings and things of that nature. Until the next REALLY BIG DEAL.

A couple people have now used the words "under" or "beneath" Melgorehn's Reach to describe the second group's location under Pylasar's lead.
This one word is changing the image of the battle ATOP Melgorehn's Reach from this (imagine the Stark tower being a mountain):

That's a super strong recap to me. Plus the original post is dripping with sarcasm and I normally would say "Don't feed trolls", but excellent recap to his bridgework. |
This -- excellent recap, yes!
Although... I'm not entirely positive that the showdown was intended to be atop the Reach rather than at the base, where all the trees and cocoons are but, that's pure speculation on my part. Maybe it will evolve to move up there though, since everyone seems to love to traipse up to the top to see things happen, heh.... only problem I see is that could get a bit dicey when people start dying and have to trek up there all over again. I think the base would be better, but maybe that's just me.

Thank you for giving a serious reply to this, Bill. Despite what someone else said, I suspect it was an honest question, since it was one I had as well.
What I really want to know is whether things like the attacking trees and the auto=transport to the orchard for dead bodies will be gone. The invasions I can generally avoid if I want to. It's the things that screw with you 24/7 that I am looking forward to seeing end.

It's going to be bad this week. The Landing not only has the auto-transport of corpses to feed the blood trees, but now the temporal properties of the area are in flux. It's very possible to get shuffled around town unexpectedly. It seems to be relatively frequently, too (every ten or fifteen minutes?). What I haven't discovered is if it's only in certain areas of town, or in any outdoor areas of town. I have yet to experience getting shuffled from inside a building, so resting at a table should be safe.
Again, I'm only going against what's been insinuated in posts and IG conversations, but I do believe the trees and the mechanics will be resolved on the night of the 9th. Storyline wise, the function of the trees was to supply blood for Althedeus, the invasions for the same reason. If there's no Althedeus, presumably the trees wither and die.
>Ooooof, that sounds like a terrible outcome -- you should consider this incentive a'plenty to all fight to your last breath.
What? The Landing has already had a Lich mayor (apparently, during my absence), and an Abomination Mayor (Love ya, Walkar!), you really think having Cruxophim in charge would be so bad? I might prefer Crux over Thrayzar (but mostly because Turinrond does not like Orcs).
Anyway, yes, THE END IS NEAR. One way or the other. Or both! :-)

Regardless of what happens I think the whole experience from December of 2013 to today has been fantastic for my perspective of enjoyment. Thanks to the staff for such awesome storytellers and to those players who have responded to the challenge.
The staff seems to have their cadre of super villains and in-training/minds eye baddies to continue to challenge us with in future hi jinks too!

Thanks. Yes, I have been subjected to the random teleportation. Annoying, but not nearly so much as lying in the orchard waiting to decay because no one is there or having to stop and heal a rank 2 wound because a tree attacked and hit you even though you were fully spelled up. Fortunately I will be out of town from Tuesday through Saturday so I won't be able to play anyway. I hope your assumption in the last statement is true. And thanks for the response in any case.

I'm going offer a counter-point to this statement, just to elaborate further.
I get that it's annoying when these sorts of terrain hazards crop up due to ongoing story-events. I get that it's not everyone's cup of proverbial tea, and so and so forth, and the following is not at all intended to say or imply that your perspective is invalid or not worth considering. Frustration isn't fun for anyone, for sure, and I would prefer for enjoyment to not be unilateral.
But... there are other perspectives, as well. And different people enjoy different things, and are sometimes frustrated by different things.
These sorts of temporary changes seem intended to lend a sense of urgency and realism to what's going on, to provide a sense of ambiance beyond just "Hey, there's some evil-looking trees here now" and so on. I don't mind it, personally, and I would -- in fact -- venture to say that I find these elements to be one of the more engaging and interesting additions to what's going on. In other games that I've played, I've seen entire towns taken over and made hostile, things drastically changed and uprooted in ways that are far more significant and inconvenient. I'm all for more things of this nature, personally, not less -- in fact, I'd prefer to see more of these sorts of gutsy dynamic changes in the world, rather the same static terrain over and over again.
So, feel free to vote against or express your disapproval about these sorts of things -- I totally understand. But, I'm in favor of them, personally... and hey, at least it will be over in a week either way and the status quo will return, so maybe we can split the difference?

The black trees went from being nothing more than a nuisance to my character (the black apples were not very tasty) to saving his bacon against the Taladorian knights and mages numerous times to where they are now, actually attacking him and are a liability and hindrance. Personally, from a mechanical perspective only, I love the trees ability to snatch up the dead and transport them to a central location. This keeps the younger foggers out of danger and lets them do their jobs without undue danger. Of course that comes with the price of the trees getting to feed upon the blood from all the corpses lying around the orchard. Action vs cost....the recurring theme of this entire storyline

This is true. There are some loose ends that will remain, all intentional. I did not want a storyline that neatly wraps up in one event and the world is returned to normal. On the contrary, I wanted a storyline that while it may "end" from a title perspective, the story does in fact go on. Things will be different... I have enough developments and fallout from Cross into Shadows to last me three more years. So don't ever...stop...buying...deeds.

I appreciate your perspective, Cruxophim. I truly am glad you and others have had fun. I nevertheless will be extremely happy when this is all over.
The only thing I would contest is this:
>These sorts of temporary changes . . .
How long have the trees been teleporting people to the orchard? It does not feel temporary, having gone on for so long. This, more than anything, I will be happy to see end.

This is unfortunate. In most situations, I see this sweeping as a mechanical advantage, it grabs bodies in and outside of town, and plops the in one location. (the disavantage, in an RP stand point, is the bodies/blood feed the orchard.) There's only like one scenario where this would be a hinderance, and sadly, yours is it, with the playing at odd hours, etc. I've noted for future ideas though, to try to find a way to code in a timer perhaps, to make things like this happen during specific points of time. Granted, I do not think I'll ever do something like this specific tree/orchard/sweeper thing, as it'd cheapen it, but it's good to know for future ideas that go on 24/7, to maybe avoid specific low population times like 3am-8am, etc.

I'm sure some will appreciate that. I'll give you my most recent example from about a week ago: my character died in the Stronghold. Someone came and Voln fogged me out and then dragged me into town--at which point I was, of course, teleported into the orchard. Either the person did not know what had happened to did not know where to look, or just decided not to worry about it. It was late, so no one else looked in. My character is not in Voln so did not have Symbol of Need. Essentially an auto-decay, though I lay there for quite a while hoping someone would come. It was very frustrating from a player point of view more than the character's. That's just the most recent example--other similar things have taken place over the months. As I said, I will be happy to see this mechanic gone.

>>grabs bodies in and outside of town, and plops them in one location
It seems to me that it may be plausible that a residual time warp of sorts might remain after the battle with Althedeus, of the sort that only affects places with only dead characters. A vision of a falling iron bucket could open over town center to deliver the newly arrived deader. If sound effects are needed, a simple 'CLUNK' would do nicely.
not Clunk
