Hi,
The Halt spell in the past when cast defaulted to the creature faced. It is quite annoying to have to go through Assess and figure out what creature you are facing to be able to cast this spell.
As it is right now, if you just type "Cast" with the Halt spell, you get the result "You can't cast that on yourself.", or something like that.
Can we get it changed back to how it was prior to the Magic system change? So that when just "Cast" it will default to the creature faced?
Thanks,
Candidus

<<I think the reasoning is that if it defaults to something you face, it tells the game "I am an offensive attack" or something.>>
When I am halting creatures in the middle of a swarm, Halt is most definately part of my Offensive attack.
Much different from the Halt spell's other uses.
But then you knew this already.
Thank you for trying to convey what you understand the reasoning in this matter to be.
Additionally there is the matter of "The fun element" to consider here. It is most definately "not fun" to have to check which creature you are facing in a swarm of 8.

I know, but I don't think GMs can make a spell go 'in this case, its offensive, in this case, its defensive'.. and I figure you'd rather not have it count as a first strike :P

Yea, I really hate using halt in large swarms, too. I hope the facing thing can be fixed :)

That is one of the unique things about Halt though. It is offensive or defensive depending on how it is used. Unfortunately this is usually a subjective call, and I doubt is able to be determined through programming.
Not sure why you are bringing up first strike since this doesn't really relate to my post. Halt would never cause First Strike soul penality even if it was deemed a pure offensive spell since it causes no damage.
Halt is one of the few spells that we have that can not be self cast. The only other ones are our obvious attack spells such as Shatter and Smite Foe. This is not a point in favor for labeling Halt as offensive or defensive only, but rather to demonstrate how it does not fall in line with our other spells.
One would hope, for consistency sake, that the Cast verb with regards to Halt could be changed to fall in line with our other Non-self cast spells.
