I happened to be around an old Barbarian friend of mine, Fenrirr, and asked if I could test our newly released Spike on him. The following is what resulted from a 10 prep (minimum) no target (which I guess doesn't matter) cast. He was wearing head armor, but it was only a leather mask.
<<You gesture at Fenrirr.
A deathly silent circle of light spins into being, whirling and bristling with glistening spines until it coalesces into a dark crystalline spike.
Roundtime: 1 second.
>
A dark crystalline spike crackles with shimmering light and discharges an undulating blast at Fenrirr!
His right eye bulges as it is caught by a stray spark.
Fenrirr is dealt a vicious stun!
>blink
You blink.
>
A dark crystalline spike crackles with shimmering light and discharges an undulating blast at Fenrirr!
Fenrirr skull explodes in a messy splatter, accompanied by a symphony of electrical crackles and squeals.
The crystalline spike splits asunder.
>
As Fenrirr slumps unconscious, you back off. The challenge is satisfied!>>
Needless to say I love this. But Fenrirr has always been rather good at taking hits from me and I'm wondering if what happened there might have been too overpowered. Ummmm, <g> It doesn't have to be! I'm not too shabby <ponders>. I didn't ask his stats and I don't like giving out mine so I hope it isn't too much trouble to just peek. I totally believe that this might be perfectly fine <g> Just thought it was something I should post. His mask also came out battered and practically destroyed, we're not sure what the condition was before but he thinks it couldn't have been much worse than practically mint, but who knows.

P.S.--Plus it was pretty cool, right!!!! Muwhhahahahahahahahaha

Initial impression:
I stopped thinking about the damage after the second cast when I noticed this thing was teaching better then SLS.
About half a dozen casts latter, I'd MLed PM and was Muddled in Harness (that sort of concentrated PM learning is something I've had to sacrifice my nerves to achieve before today since Magic 2.1 started).
I am very pleased, and barring the learning being buggy or something similiar, have yet another 'must have' spell for when the preview is over.

I never cared much for this spell before Magic 2.1, but now it is exciting. I love the messaging; the heart laying on the ground is particularly entertaining. It also seems to teach pretty well, which is to be expected because, unlike Starlight Sphere, you have to cast multiple times to kill when hunting in your TM range. Thanks Rigby for the great work!

I found it impressive against creatures slightly above my level.
Fighting creatures below my level it is a waste of mana, but Burn and Dinazen Olkar aren't quite effective against creatures that are slightly above me. This is at minimum prep for all spells.
Plus the fact that Crystal Spike can sometimes deliver two attacks instead of one makes it even more so.
As of right now, I think the spell rocks!

Crystal Spike msg bug on 11/19/2002 09:04 PM CST
I was hunting with Crystal Spike when my WD decided to cut out on me... meaning exit stage right. So I had a CRS or two in the room picking on pecs as I ran and as I left I got this (Did it twice... could likly repeat it)
[Gwenalion Fens]
A fallen log blocks the path to the south and forces travelers to skirt around the puddle at its base. Many years dead, its branches are chewed off, its trunk is split, and old char marks near a split limb hint at fire or lightning as a contributing factor in its demise. But life springs from death in the fens as in the forest, and graceful orchids and bromeliads have turned the fallen into a nurse tree on which they feed.
Obvious paths: north, southeast, southwest, northwest.

As you can see the CRS is continuing to attack (which is just fine) but... I'm getting broken combat messaging from a critter in another room heh.

Not sure about other testers, but am finding that crs seems to work better on unarmoured creatures, not sure if it was like this before as Redfers didn't have the spell. Am finding that it takes a similar amount of mana to despatch the thugs in undershard (armoured) as warklins and there is something of a difference in their combat abilities. It has been suggested that Faenrae Stalkers (armoured) are around 60th circle barb creatures these days, not sure how true this is though and, as such, should compare to the warklins. Redfers finds it harder to despatch a stalker with crystal spike than a warklin.
Am wondering whether it will be partial displacement that is the spell to use against armoured opponents. Mortom offers the chance to learn this spell so perhaps it's scheduled for release soon?

Don't know if this really is a bug or its supposed to happen but why does the critter get mad right when you cast the spell?
A deathly silent circle of light spins into being, whirling and bristling with glistening spines until it coalesces into a dark crystalline spike.
A swamp troll becomes enraged by your spell!
Roundtime: 1 second.
I am confused. Did I attack the target or did I just create the crystal spike and there is a bug?
