I am considering buying a set of LC (probably shirt/greaves combo) that is, ideally, less hindering and better protecting than the armor I have now, but I have no idea how much it costs and will likely need to save some coin before I place an order. How much would something like that cost?
My current armor:
You feel certain that some deep blue chain patterned in silvery-white steelsilk with dazzling stars entwined among hemlock blossoms appears to impose high maneuvering hindrance and offers:
good protection and good damage absorption for puncture attacks.
good protection and good damage absorption for slice attacks.
moderate protection and good damage absorption for impact attacks.
moderate protection and good damage absorption for fire attacks.
moderate protection and good damage absorption for cold attacks.
poor protection and good damage absorption for electrical attacks.
If you were only maneuvering in some deep blue chain patterned in silvery-white steelsilk with dazzling stars entwined among hemlock blossoms you would be lightly hindered.

Here's a smattering of Eeary forged LC armor (he got the tap because he produces a wide variety of armor but there are many great forgers out there). Personally I like the shirt and greaves combo myself as they all weigh a lot less. For a hauberk or chain/greaves combo you're probably looking for around 40-50 plats.
Usually you can try talking to the forgers themselves or one of the traders they well through. I think it's easy to track down the traders since the forgers are usually busy in the forge. And two of my favorite traders to talk to would be Ahnoui (http://drbazaar.googlepages.com/) and Ienna (http://downcametherain.googlepages.com/) since they have great lists of creation items on their websites.

I don't know how Relayer and previous forgers priced their items. I credit Redarch with setting up how I have and continue to price items. Eeary's items follow the same basic structure with "special" items being marked up in denominations of 5 - 10 plats.
Basically - from most anyone, the full basic set is going to run you 60 plats. If you decided to purchase an LC balaclava (Shard Shop, Some Special Trader Shops, and/or free from critter drops) or an HC visored Helm (Haven Shop) you will drop 10 plats from that price. I recommend this for a LOT of people. The shirt/greaves or haub and gloves are really worth the price. Since Chain helms cannot be forged to protect the eyes, its often worth going with store bought to keep things simpler and save some coin.
If you are stuck between choosing a Haub or Shirt + Greaves Combo - I'd recommend the Shirt + Greaves. This makes it easier to swap out armor pieces and train multiple armor types.
If you don't understand anything about training more than one type of armor, here's the simple version. If you train LC and HC together, or if you train LP and HP together, its not going to really make much of a difference to you than if you were just training one of those. However, you will gain more TDPs , so you can increase your stats faster, your mind won't lock up as fast as it would if you were just training one armor, it often makes meeting armor requirements easier, and it gives you more options for suiting up down the road. This may not be true in all cases, but its true often enough.
Before making your armor purchase - tell your seller your guild, how you hunt, what are your goals and let them make recommendations. You may also want to post on these boards, especially under your guild, asking for what armor setups they like best.
Anything thats worth purchasing is worth purchasing wisely. Its not going to kill you to take a few extra days to ask around and get opinions before dropping your plats on an armor set. No reason to be spontaneous and just take "whatever" only to find out its totally wrong for you and then you being very disappointed (and making the merchant work twice as hard to reoutfit you if they do armor swaps).
