I'm currently wearing an HC balaclava and gloves, and an LC hauberk, but my HC never moves past clear. I can sit and lock LC, shield, parry, evasion, and multi, and it never moves. Do I need to switch to a chain shirt and HC greaves?

Possibly.

Another thing is to make sure your accessories really are HC instead of neutral.

Yeah, like Ryeka said, make sure it's really HC and not neutral.

That setup you described should be moving HC above clear. Is your HC skill on the same level as the LC?

I'm training HC and LC at a good rate just by swapping gloves and vambraces

Leather Armor: 247 86% -> (34/34)
Light Chain: 191 59% -> (15/34)
Heavy Chain: 153 47% -> (10/34)
Cloth Armor: 158 82% -> (19/34)
Bone Armor: 160 96% -> (19/34)

My setup is:

Leather Cowl (head, eyes and neck)
Leather breasplate (chest, back and abdomen)
LC vambraces and LC gloves (swapping with HC vambraces and HC gloves when needed)
Bone greaves (swapping with cloth greaves when needed)

This is a ranger with armor secondary.

Turns out I'm an idiot, and swapped my HC accessories for LC at some point.

Will neutral chain accessories just say chain on the appraisal, instead of light chain or heavy chain?

IIRC they will say whatever your higher skill is. (IE what they will teach).

Fyi, there's no such thing as a HC balaclava as far as I know. They're neutral.

This, You probably have the one from shard which is definitely neutral (also sold somewhere else too yes?). Works fine if HC > LC, need a different setup if LC > HC.

The trader shop in Muspar'i has balaclavas, and I seem to remember hearing of one other shop. I can't remember for sure where it is though.

Demciil's armor in shard. You know, the place that sold balaclavas for years before anyone else did.

If it helps, the newer armor shop in Haven has an HC helm:

HR>appr my helm quick

The chain helm is heavy chain.

The helm looks like it offers protection for the following areas:

head
neck
right eye
left eye

You feel certain that a visored chain helm appears to impose light maneuvering hindrance and light stealth hindrance, offering:
good protection and moderate damage absorption for puncture attacks.
good protection and moderate damage absorption for slice attacks.
good protection and moderate damage absorption for impact attacks.
moderate protection and moderate damage absorption for fire attacks.
moderate protection and good damage absorption for cold attacks.
low protection and moderate damage absorption for electrical attacks.

If you were only wearing a visored chain helm your maneuvering would be minimally hindered and your stealth would be minimally hindered.
But considering all the armor and shields you are wearing or carrying, you are currently fairly hindered and your stealth is fairly hindered.

You are certain that the chain helm is fairly sturdy, and is in pristine condition.

The chain helm is made with metal.
The chain helm is quite supple.
You are confident that the chain helm weighs about 110 stones.

Only a couple gold IIRC, but I've had it quite a while.

Is it possible to forge HC head armor without eye protection? What about store bought?

Chain Helm = Head

Full Chain Helm = Head/Neck

Neither covers eyes.

The visored chain helm at Bantheld's Ironworks in Riverhaven is HC. It costs 550 copper Lirums. All chain gloves AFAIK are also neutral, so if you would like HC gloves to wear, you'll need to find someone willing to forge you a pair.

My usual set up for training HC/LC is the HC visored chain helm, forged HC gloves, forged HC greaves, and forged LC chain shirt, or full chain shirt. This set up keeps both armors tracking at almost exactly the same rate so that by the time you've got 600 ranks in one, you're probably at 595 in the other.

This is excellent advice. It's the perfect dual-armor mix. Since you've been wearing an LC hauberk I'm guessing your LC ranks are higher. In this setup the shirt will grab just a hair over 50%, enough to keep it ahead of HC. This means that if you don't have a forged LC shirt, in a pinch the storebought neutral one should work, saving you some dough. Not as good a shirt obviously but doable.

As for the HC, Ciressa at the Riverhaven trading tables carries both low and high weight capped HC accessories and hauberks.

I've sinced switched to HC shirt, LC greaves, gloves, and full helm, and a leather mask, and everything is coming along nicely. I typically hunt long enough to lock both HC and LC, so there may always be a 10 rank difference, but I'm ok with that.

Thanks for all the help and advice.
