all of my defenses are over 200. i know its be complained about before but it makes be feel better to vent. Simu these types of crits are crap.

< With the speed and temerity of a swooping falcon, you step backward and then bash at a bearded snow goblin. A bearded snow goblin deflects some of the mallet with a frozen club.
The mallet lands a powerful strike that rips skin and snaps bone with a hard blow to the right leg.
A bearded snow goblin stares at you stupidly for a moment, before its eyes roll backwards into its head. The creature's skin turns frosty blue, taking on an icy appearance, as it falls to the ground with a thud.
[You're solidly balanced]
[Roundtime 6 sec.]
[S]!R>
Grim laughter trails from your lips as you fall into Urrem'tier's embrace.
* Moving as one fluid extension of power while tripping into a better position, a svelte snow goblin swings a large frozen club at you. You fail to evade, moving directly into the blow. The club lands a heavy strike that blasts the foe in the lower back with a sickening crunch (bending it in a way you didn't think possible!).
Glancing at you, a svelte snow goblin emits a meek roar and performs a ridiculous-looking dance. It then hoots with laughter.
Your war mallet falls to the ground.

Get used to it. You get those type of hits from EVERY critter, it's just they don't usually end up killing you in one shot until you get beyond caracals.
You have been vanquished. That is all.

This is easily, unless I'm missing something major, the game's hugest playability factor and I have no clue why this has been allowed to remain a reality for years now.
Maybe something will finally start getting done when the average player hunts caracals. I understand it's a problem of large scale (damage caps on player body parts, the entire structure of combat calculation in DR) but this is a problem more pressing than bit-based experience, a new guild, spell reviews, a lore rewrite, or anything else that I saw on the 2008 goals.
*******
Doctor: Are you Alliance?
Early: Am I lion? Huh. I don't think of myself as a lion. But you might as well have a mighty roar!

Until you can get to the point where you can parry/shield block these critical hits(I just reached this point in Raiders), it's pretty much the luck of the draw. You'll overcome it sooner or later--just have to deal with them for the time being until you master whatever creature you hunt.

That's the problem. These crits can never be overcome. If by 'mastering whatever creature you hunt' you mean 'past the caps and no longer learn from them'...you're partially correct.
This topic comes up every other month or so. "Open rolls", the *As your opponent stumbles/trips into a better position...are basically the equivalent of rolling a perfect 100. If that lands on a vital area, you will likely be dead.
The GMs have stated the only acceptable change to this damage model is getting constant little hits that add up over time and force people to get healed regularly.

Nope. Still hunting Raiders(whose criticals I can now defend against) and am learning just fine.

Things are extremely slow right now, which is why my defensive and offensive skills aren't mind locked. Needless to say, it is still very possible to learn well from creatures which you can survive criticals from, though it will be at the point where you can handle a lot of them reliably(IOW, not overhunting).

Hahaha, we can be the dual masters of throwing weapons!
You'll be the Throwing Blade Master, and I'll be the Throwing Shuriken Master, provided they ever make their way into the game... :(
Anyway, I hope you've been training up your Offhand Weapon skill so that you can throw 10 blades at once when dual throw comes out. ;)
