Typically, the best slice on MEs will be a forged scimitar. For storebought, you have the scimitars, cutlass, ilteshes, and perhaps a few axes. Also not too sure on what stats forged ME axes can have.

Hangers are nice too, one of the best store-bought and much much more resistant to breakage....if they'd only 'learn' to forge them now ;)

Depending on your financial means, the crossing scimitar is very solid weapon, you can improve on it slightly by picking up the scimitar from Fayrin's Rest which has a bit better construction and is harder to damage. If you can afford forged you have a few more options. If you are not very strong there are 18 stone scimitars available. If you are abit stronger there ar 26 stone and 32-33 stone heavy slice scimitars that work very well, the heavier ones are better suited for strength and have better durability. And if ya got a few thousand plat to spend then try and find yourself a kertig scimitar heh.

And btw...

Hangers are IDENTICAL to crossing scimitars except that they cost more and appraise higher in coin value so they cost more to repair.

If/when I lose my forged scimitar, I will run down to the Crossing and pick up a store bought one. Very nice blades and I don't spend any time worrying about them. Last forged scim I had was broken by a germishden throw about a month ago. I used the store bought scim up until last week when someone asked if I wanted a forged one.

And to add on the worrying comment. I always pull out the store bought scim during invasions and such and tend to find myself checking the damage status of the forged blades during normal combat.

Though the extra damage level is nice (killing orc raiders quicker) there is just something satisfying about locking ME without killing a single raider.

Go with a forged blade when you get to a new hunting area, but switch over to a store bought one after you've been in there for a while. Then switch again the next time you move.

Ok, enough crazy thoughts from the lowly mage.

~~Umm BTW no they are not.. while I have had many crossing scimitars and cutlasses (store bought as well as forged) break on 'tuff-skinned' critters such as gargs and whatnot... the bonus to the hanger which at this point is ONLY store bought (to ny knowings) is far more resistant to breakage.. if not imune...I have never had my hanger break on me...while the other... they not didnt break on me..so they are not identical

Not sure I really understand all that (they not didn't break?). But anyhow I guess it must be one of those magic bonuses that don't show up in appraisal or comparision. So thanks for the info.

~on Hangers~ No magic...just the ridgitiy of the way hangers are/were constructed... royals use to use them specifically for hunting.. the semi straight thick back of the blade gave suport to the long sweeping curve of the front of the blade..for dealing killing blows and butchering... and yes they dont break or are very resistant to break and damage..in several years I only found I needed to repair it once. I guess they figure thats bonus enough for a store bought and perhaps why they are not forged.

~And sorry if it sounded as though I was lecturing, but, while other ideas of a ME with a 'good slice' were either glazed past or aknowledged... my comment got me a 'Oh "btw" as if I have no idea what I am talking about... when at the least if you dont like them... glaze past it and dont respond to it, but go on to give you POV on the weapon you think is the best slicer for the coin.

~~Oh an BTW, another note on MEs', sabres should be one of the best slicers out in the game...they should have a quite horrid puncture damage....yet thats how they are clasified as a poker.. shrugs

It's not a hidden quality.

Hangers do, or did, have better construction.

Other properties seem the same.

nods yep, what he said, bout hangers.. now that combined with being able to be forged by weapons-smith, would be even nicer... jes curious why its one of the few weapons that cannot be forged.

~and always wonderd how sabres got labeled other then being a slicer/chopper.. if anything they are dissmally suited for being as effective thrusting and jabbing, but rather created for slicing and chopping, hence the curved blade, with only one edge. ;)

Dunno about at some point in the distant past but crossing scimitars and hangers both app at p/m/l f/f fairly sturdy and weigh 31 stones. Given the extremely common use of the same weapon template for various weapons I would be very surprised if they did not compare identically when compared against each other. If someone would like to do so and post it that would be ideal as I'm too lazy to run to shard right now. And as far as thier RL origins well DR isn't exactly consistent in transferring rl weapons to dr weapons.

Doesnt really matter because the Fayrins rest scimitar (very well constructed) is better than a hanger (fairly sturdy) as for storebought weapons. For a lower circle character I would suggest the cutlass (well constructed) from fayrins because it too is better constructed and lighter than a hanger and is what I used up until about 36 circle.

My sabre is a good slicer and not so good puncture weapon, though it's one of those heavy edged weapons from down near Shard.

Hrmmmm try typing attack X3 and it gives you lunge and thrust...not the cycle of combat commands asigned to cutlasses and scimitars and other like slicers.. besides I have Always heard they were considered pokers.. or why'd they asign such detrimental moves (as thrust) to the Attack-X-3 verb ?

I have and older one forged by Mendensity and stamped with Gurt's old mark... I keep it vaulted for the rt it gives me with attack X 3...anyhoo thats off the tract a bit grins

Nope...mine jes says sabre not calvalry or fencing(if fencing then it might be an Epee your thinking of) as sabres are slicers.. and even when sparring(fencing is a term for certain bladed weapons.. and true you could have a sort of Epee that resembles a sabre, but..) well thats how it sits rl-like grins

~mine appraises as an ME poker and any talk of then at any time I ever heard was that they are pokers period.... since when did it come about that there are now two different kinds of sabre... slicers and pokers ? And how does one find out aside from typing attack X 3 to see if you NEED to lunge with it ? Realy curious ;)

Fencing sabres primarily use downwards and crosswise cutting motions. They're relatively heavy and utilize brute strength more than a rapier or foil (IRL). My fencing friend often made fun of the Sabre fencers, but also noted the many bruises she ended up with when she played with them.

Cavalry Sabres are -also- slicing weapons.

That sabres in DR are puncture based is very silly. If anything, they should be dual function.

Also, in regards to slicing weapons, the Schiavano in .. Ratha or aesry... has heavy slice and moderate impact at around 50 stones. HE though. Fairly/fairly, too. Looks nice.

I get a chance to log in, I'll go pull the sabre out and assess it, then post it here. I don't use it normally because I try to not duplicate the style of weapons I use. I use a flamberge and that does damn fine slice and impact damage so what I needed was a good puncture weapon so I use the reinforced cinquedea which does heavy puncture. I know the sabre I have does heavy slice, basically the cinquedea and sabre are swapped. I think it's fair on the puncture, like the cinqueda is fair on the slice. Again, I'll have to log in and get it.

Now, is the heavy slice sabre you have an HE perhaps ?
wondering after seeing the lil chart of store bought ones up there ;)

and then after you check that out...see if because its an HE sabre with heavier slice damage vs its puncture, if typing Attack X 3 gets you thrusting and lunging combos still, or slicing chopping combos being its classed an HE ... very curious :)

Yeah it's a heavy edged weapon, I mentioned that before. I found it amusing that it was heavy edged when I bought it. Finally logged in and appraised it, I was wrong it's not heavy slice. Here's the info.

A gold-hilted sabre is a heavy edged type weapon.

You are certain that it could do:
low puncture damage
moderate slice damage
fair impact damage

You are certain that the sabre is fairly balanced and is fairly suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.

You are certain that the gold-hilted sabre is fairly sturdy, and is in pristine condition.

The gold-hilted sabre is made with metal.
The gold-hilted sabre feels light.
You are certain that the gold-hilted sabre is worth exactly 16000 lirums.

I don't use it because my flamberge's slice and impact are much nastier, if I am using a shield I use my cinquedea which does heavy puncture, fair slice and low impact.

Went out and hunted with the HE sabre. Simply typing ATTACK each time after first going to Parry the first time.

This is the result of typing ATTACK nine times.

As far as I've known, that SCC HE sabre is and has been the only variation on sabres ever. Before forging, there was that, the acid-etched sabre.... and maybe thats it. With the forging template, the sabre was put into ME as a poker, and I don't believe it's HE slicing cousin was added. So that HE sabre is an anomoly found nowhere else in the realms.

Ristyl

P.S. I could be wrong, but strongly doubt it... anyone else find a HE sabre from somewhere aside from SCC?
