Looking for a reasonable weapon for a friend of mine. She's just starting out, and so doesn't have either the physical stats to deal with anything too heavy nor the coin to pay for anything forged.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a nice, reasonably weighted and balanced quarterstaff or quarterstaff-type weapon that won't cost the earth?

Having perused a couple of catalogues, what are people's opinions on the 'Lightened Bo Stick' from El Bain's and the 'Ironwood Staff' from Leth? On a side note, which stat is most important for balance? I can never remember.

If you don't have the stats, don't bother with QS. Standard weight is 50stones and only apps at heavy impact.

I think QS is a pretty frustrating weapon to try to use. However, if you friend is keen on them- and doesn't have alot of coin to spend the lightened bo stick is probably a decent option.

There are some festival staffs out there that have holy symbols on them- I just yesterday pulled my raven staff out of my vault- but its appraisal is pretty poor and it damages fairly easily.

If you friend is a really big into RP, you might ask around for one of these staffs- doubt they would be too expensive to buy if someone has one.

What deity? If it's Urrem'tier...get the artifact scorpion staff from the swamps. Cowled dragon priests/priestesses will drop a bone staff.

If you can't afford a old carved cane/stave/stick, I definitely recommend starting with the lightened bo stick. You'll never get the effectiveness of a sword, but that's just a choice to make for yourself. Hopefully the faithful will be happier with staves with Fletching 2.

I would recommend against the ironwood staff from Leth/soothsayer's hut. Even thought it has ironwood in the description, it's flimsy as hell. I broke one hunting cougars.

On the other hand, the atapwi from Leth is nice if you have the 7 platinums for it. Has a nice verb and can customize it (mine's silver plated), but it's a bit heavy. Best bet is probably the bo stick from El'Bains.

The pike staff type weapons (free in Haven swamp trolls) is pretty good but uses a different combo than impact type QS. Combo:QS2 dodge draw slice thrust lunge draw

I have the ironwood staff with the Damaris panther carved in it. I damaged it on ship rats. Makes about as much sense as spending big plats on festy thrown weapons. OK for RP, but not much else.

Oh, fantastic. My friend is a Prydaen cleric, so a weapon similar to that would have been ideal. I'm starting to think I might not bother, despite the rp value of a quarterstaff and my own personal liking for the weapon.

One might reasonably expect that a quarterstaff would be bit sturdier than that. Is this being looked at? As near as I can tell, there is currently no reason in the world to use this weapon.

Yes, pike/pole weapons having either crappy or crappier construction is part of the overall weapon review.

Well, if it's being looked at it may be worth my while picking up a nice staff when I find one and, in the interim, my friend can use a store bought for training purposes.

I believe the best thing to do is to find someone with some mech lore under their belt and ask them to carve you a cane, this will be free and with 168 mech I can get heavy impact reasonably balanced and fairly suited
