What is the best practical weapon selection for hunting? Not necessarily a specific weapon type... but is it good to carry both a slicing and a blunt weapon of some type? And what about ranged, are certain ranged better than others? (Throwing versus aimed)

Re: Weapon selection on 06/23/2006 08:23 PM CDT
Really depends on what you want to accomplish. I strive to attain 100 lessons in each melee weapon before I achieve 35th circle. However certain damnable weapons such as short/quarter staves and sling/staff sling are a real monster to train. For practical purposes, I'd recommend a medium edge, medium blunt and a longbow. All are fairly affordable and easy to replace if damaged beyond repair. Once you've found you're own path, you might want to explore other weapon options...if you're able to increase your strenght, blunt weapons are a real boon. Certain creatures are resistant to slicing or blunt weapons, which is why you should be at least proficient in several weapons.

I would suggest learning a blunt, edged and ranged weapons. Ranged weapons are good for problem situations where you need to hang back. Some creatures have natural affinity to edge or blunt weapons so it's good to train a variety. Plus the messaging on Large and 2 handed blunts are awsome

My personal 'bare minimum', to be prepared for all occasions, would be:
Jabber(I have a forged sabre for this)
Slicer(Bastard sword is what I use)
Basher(Have a festival mace)
And either a composite bow or a non-lodging Heavy Thrown.(ideally, both!)
Math problems? Call 1-800-[(10x)(13i)^2]-[sin(xy)/2.362x]

And an even more bare minimum would be one melee weapon and one ranged weapon. This should be done, IMO, at the very least. Train as many or as few weapons as you like. We're weapon prime!

What do you see your character doing? In my opinion that should be your only concern. My top three weapons: longbow, short bow, comp bow. Probably one of the hardest ways for a ranger (or really any combat guild) to circle. Awful hard to learn parry and leather armor while staying at missile range. I guess my point is, don't train something because you "should", train them because you enjoy doing so.

I am currently using Medium edged and shortbow... but I thought about picking up light crossbow instead or light thrown so I could use a shield at the same time. I will probably pick up a blunt too... I am a bardess so strength is not one of my virtues, would medium blunt be too heavy for me?
Re: Weapon selection on 06/23/2006 11:11 PM CDT
Most people suggest 'one blunt, one edge, one range'. Personally, I have never found a 'useful' situation for this. Only a select (read <10) few critters are resistant to weapons. I'd say train HE. Then figure out which other weapons you'd like to play with. 2HE at some point becomes a very good choice because the damage vs. time ratio is excellent once you have min RT with it.
If you're a mage, no real reason to train ranged anyway, as you have it built in (and it'll help with your magic reqs).
My character (33rd cleric) uses:
HE
Magic
Carries and plays with (with <half my main)
HT
MB
2HB
In other words, figure out what you want to do, and ignore the heck out of anyone else.

If you get the right medium blunt, weight will not be a problem. If you want something cheap, try the tiger-claw mace from Tiger Clan. If you have a little more money to spend, get the Horseman's Mace from Theren Keep: The horseman's mace is one of the lightest store-bought MBs around, and it does hit hard.
If fatigue is a problem, go into brawl mode and use circle-bob-weave between combos. That will allow you to rest.
Despite what a number of nay-sayers say, light cross is actually a pretty powerful weapon- if you can deal with the RT. If you're using an arm-worn shield that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
I have a young bard character who brawls and actually throws rocks to train LT. But Knife Clan does sell some pretty throwing blades, and I seem to remember seeing a few others up in Muspar'i.
Good luck!

For another non-lodging LT, there is a bola sold in Shard.

I'm curious why no one suggests on melee, one pole, and one ranged.
HE/Halberd/LX here. Though these days I'd suggest HX over LX... I started training LX when it was the only crossbow usable with shields. Also seems pikes might be a better choice than halberds now if you like lances.

Because pole ranged weapons are nearly useless?
Someone either hangs back and shoots you, or chages to Melee and stabs you. Or stalks to melee range. Or uses magic.
Hangback would be useful for this, if it worked, and didn't inflict nasty RT.
Plus, halberd, pike, qs (is it pole?) weapons are the least useful templates, and have bad combos. So till weapons and combat get fixed, they're painful for the user.

Not so much useless, the problem is staying at pole range or keeping an opponent at pole range.

Halberds and QS arent too bad as far as combos, its pike combos that get you torn up.
I enjoy mastication. I masticate three to four times a day. Sometimes I masticate alone while in front of my TV and sometimes I masticate with my family.

Pikes, halberds and staves don't hold a candle to a forged greatsword, both in combos and damage v. weight. Some aren't to terrible, but 2HE is by far the superior pole ranged weapon.

We arent saying that halberds are that great. We are saying halberds arent that bad. Nothing works as well as a slicing edged weapon, those are the only weapons with decent combos. The new combat code got rid of parry-jab for edged weapons but tanked almost every other weapon type.

It'd be nice if certain combat manuevers got another review in terms of their defensive manuever penalties and/or the damage output from certain combat manuevers (and the weapons that are frequently associated with those combat manuevers). That would also help the lesser utilized weapons.

No, we need to nerf edged weapons so they are as bad as all the others...
