Depending on what you are asking:
1) The size of the creature (system settings) determines how many can get to melee on you in normal circumstances. Examples: 5 ship rats, 5 goblins, 3 pothanits, 3 badgers, 6 sand sprites, etc.
2) If you are asking how many of X creature you can handle at the same time at melee, that will be based off of the difficulty setting of the creature(s) and your MO skill.
1 requires no MO ranks
2 requires either X or Y ranks of MO, where X is the MO ranks needed to handle a flanker (relatively low) or Y ranks for one behind you (higher number). X+Y would be needed if you managed to have them flanking + behind, and Y + Y' for both behind.
0 = facing, although any MO penalties you accrue apply to all creatures you are fighting.
X = flanking, the smallest bump to MO skill at present.
Y = 1st creature behind, a much larger jump than X.
Y' = 2nd+ creature behind, not sure if Y'=Y, or is larger.
Note that these numbers scale with the creatures, so a ship rat might be 1, 2 and 3; where a malchata would probably be somewhere over 300 ranks for the flanker.
