I'm in a pretty annoying spot. I have enough Multi(380) to take four Raiders without a problem, but just under enough to handle Celpeze reliably(whoever said Celpeze eventually get you was right).
The problem I face, is that the first floor Raiders are too easy, but the second-third floor has such a wide range of rooms that it's increasingly difficult to get 3+ of them on me in order to learn Multi, especially since hardly anyone seems to hunt there anymore. Training weapons there is no problem as I can just run between rooms and play the slaughter game, but Multi-Opponent is an entirely different beast. I literally have to sit still in a room, and pray to God that more of them slowly... and I mean slowly trickle in.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do in order to raise both my Multi and defensive skills to Celpeze level? Often I hear of people going to Celpeze from Basilisks and other such creatures, but sometimes I fear that my little arm worn fairly sturdy shield will get eaten.
I've been running back and forth between the manor and south-barricade Celpeze, but the gen in the south barricade is just as bad as the gen in the manor.
I'm pretty desperate at this point now, so I'd probably even pick up a real hand held shield and forgo my disdane of shields if it meant progressing up the creature ladder, because it seems I've hit a wall that I keep bashing my head on.
Any help any of you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Re: *Insert Choice Word* Multi on 04/26/2008 09:58 AM CDT
really all i can think of is something that applies up and down the critter level - rather than raiders, find something "natural" that swarms for multi. and use disposable shields, even if you have to temporarily move down a little critter-wise until you get the shield up to near your multi rank.
The reason barbs usually do better at melee/multi in general is because all of their defenses are either primary or secondary - so they can keep them fairly even. The rest of us have to work harder to do that.

Sorry for the misconception, but my disdain for shield has not hindered my training it in any way. In fact, all of my defenses are near 20+ above my Multi-Opponent skill. Neither shield skill nor parry skill is my problem in this case.

I was faced with the same problem friend. Second floor raider spawn was abysmal and north barricade ate me alive with shield up.
My solution was to stick it out in raiders until I had more than enough evasion to make up for the lack of shield and MO at the time. Honestly, its north barricade or nothing when it comes to multi. It is a shame too but just hit the same problem AGAIN however this time in malchata.
Finding 4 on me outside of the hours of 5pm to 10pm is really hard. I've just about given up on MO at 499 ranks. Sometimes I can get it moving and then I'll notice it rank once in a blue moon but it definitely isn't the focus of my training anymore.

To clarify, don't train in the north barricade area. You don't need that much spawn when you first move there. You can alternate between training offense and defense in the south barricade area. There's plenty of spawn still if you move around.
Only other option I tried around those ranks was warklins/maulers, but they can be nasty too.

Ahh, thank you for the lovely suggestions. I'll try both of them.

The cinder's as well in the swamp get pretty swarmy if you have at least two folks in there. They are beyond basilisks near the rope bridge.

I've recently moved back up to hunting around Rossmans. I split my time between raiders to train my defenses and Reivers to backtrain weapons and disarm/lockpicking.
This works well for me, as I just pop into raiders to lock parry, evasion, armor, multi and get my brawling moving. After doing this for about five minutes, I leave the spawn and head outside to hunt reivers. Rinse and repeat a couple of times and my hunt is done, so I head back to Theren Keep to pop my boxes.
So far I've gone from 445 parry to 451 parry. Similar jumps in evasion, armor, multi and brawling in about a week.
I think what I'm saying is you just need to be more patient with raiders. They will get you to where you want to be, it just takes time. As far as dancing with 4 celps, yeah I've had really bad luck with them too. I won't go near them until I am over 500 in my respective defenses.

I wouldn't wait too long. They slow up pretty bad around 580 :(

Everyone has a different situation. I honestly can't leave raiders until I hit 500 in parry and evasion, mainly because my multi skill is 100/90 ranks under my parry/evasion skill. In my case I have to (get to if you're an optimist) wait.
Current skills:
Parry: 451
Evasion: 435
Multi: 346

Leilond - if your defensive skills are at or around 400, you should try the bristleback pecs. That is what I used to push my parry up into the 440's. The Bristlebacks by Rossman's keep train just as well as the M'riss variety and have the added bonus of not being on that island.
One more thing about the Raiders. If you disarm them they are pretty harmless. That's what I do currently and can dance with 4 of em until my defenses lock, at which time I either kill em all or roar em out of my room to redistribute for the other hunters to kill.

I came into northern barricade celpeze's with 450 shield 330 evasion/multi and 350 parry. I did die often at first untill I got used to them but I would just kill as quickly as I can when I had to dance with more then two. I had no problem locking all of my combat skills doing this. Though, paladin's do have a good arsenal of buffing spells for combat and they are probaly the reason I survived with those ranks.

I'm just going to suck it up and hang in second floor Raiders a while--and by hang, I mean live on the second floor, bed and all.
Guess it doesn't hurt to do some instrument practice whenever there's a lag of raiders, eh? The times that there are a constant stream of 4+ raiders(when there are other adventurers around) works wonders for combat skills, so the off-time isn't such a bad thing I suppose. I figure I'll stay here until I reach mid 400's in multi. At that point, celpeze should be baby food.
Look forward to seeing you high rollers in the future.

Come join me in scaly seordmaors if you're tired of Raiders. They teach defenses a little higher, but less offense. Good skinning to get you ready for celpeze skins. The area is small. 3 spawn per hunter like Raiders. I need bait. :(
...up the spawn in Theren's hunting! 3 seordmaors, 3 raiders and 3 sky giants. Good things do not always come in threes :| We're big boys, we can handle five of each. Maybe seven of the giants, yeah. mmm...

Any catch to Seordmaors? Smaller area, 3 gen per hunter and skinning exp sounds a little too good to be true.

Yup, Lightning Bolt and Tingle. If you know Joy, then you'll be fine from what I hear. Tingle never works on me. The real downside is all the time they waste casting magic. Play with them to see if they're viable enough. You won't make much money and the danger is high. Good EXP if you can figure them out.
