Seems like some combination of reflex and evasion.

I'd wait to tackle Malchata until you have 70 reflex.

Seems like a fairly standard evasion check. Reflex, evasion, hinderance, and burden are all noticeable.

Bleh... I hate being shield primary/evasion tert.

I'm down in P5 right now and it seems like zealots might be trailing off, anyone have any ideas on a critter around P5(I hunt celpeze when I can but I don't want to spend all my time on Kresh) that'd be good to hunt post-zealots?

Landros you might just go give malchata a try. I forget my exact skills or stats going, but I can tell you I had alot less reflex than the 70 someone suggested.

If you don't mind going to the end of P5, black goblins and Apes both teach awesomely in the 500-mid 600's range. And being shield primary is a boon, since the black goblins only annoying thing is throwing axes. Apes also throw their bones. I've been quite pleases with Apes, and there are plenty of rooms you can go in without ever dealing with mud.

And I'm even able to get 4 apes when (as far as I can tell) I'm by myself in there... so I can keep multi moving. Feel free to stop by the cleric guild that is right next to goblins, I've generally got my empath and cleric there.

Interesting, I thought I remember trying apes and the gen rate being kinda low. But I'll give those another shot.

<<How about the sand attack, I think I remember hearing that you needed something like 75 reflex to avoid the sand attack, are they huntable with 50?>>

I don't think anyone's ever been able to confirm for sure what the sandstorms are contesting. I've seen people of so many attribute make ups go in there, all with different results. It seems mostly evasion/reflex/agility based though.

<<Any ideas if shield is as effective in defending against the sand attack as evasion is?>>

No. It's not an attack per say. It's more like an environmental effect. The most you can do is just land on your feet.

I would give them a try. As I said, I've seen so many mixed results. Best way to tell is to just try them. The sandstorm is mostly just gonna rough you up and stun you a bit. Nothing too terrible. Even the best people still deal with it a little bit. Best way to figure it out is to give it a try.

This is a bit late after your post Landros but as no one has suggested it how about DP Assassins?

Have you tried those. They use Crossbows as a Shield Primary you ought to have a good time in there. Them or Plague Wraiths. Both are very near the Zelot area and both are higher than Zelots but lower than Malchata.

Hmm, I'll give those a shot. I've been starting to try spirit dancers, but the shield damaging thing is pretty annoying. Max prep DA and I still can't avoid it.

Also, I can't seem to find where the assassins are, near the zealot area, all I can find are the juggernauts.

For what its worth, I found DP assassins, and the hunting there seems to be less an ideal. They start off by shooting bolts at you which kinda hamstrings the MO training.

It seems like my options for plain jane hunting are pretty limited outside of celpeze.

A s'sugi malchata crouches and carefully scoops a handful of sand from the dune surface. With a curious buzzing noise, it blows the sand from its palm.
Suddenly, a violent wind whips the sand into a furious storm, scouring the area!

Your move behind your deep purple shield to avoid the swirling sand!

Oooo very nice. What guild and what size shield were you using? I've tried malchata with a 116th paladin using an arm worn tower shield and never got that messaging, and also with a big warmie using an arm worn tanned buckler and never got that messaging either. I wonder if that's a recent update to messaging.

There's about three different sand attacks that can happen there.

One inflicts minor skin wounds and balance loss (the balance loss occurs even if Manifest Force reduces the damage to zero: bug). This one can be shield blocked.

Another inflicts brief (like 1-2 seconds) immobilization and a short roundtime. The roundtime is inflicted even if you successfully defend against it: bug. I don't think shield helps here.

The third knocks you stunned into another room with minor injuries all over your body. It can sometimes send you flying in a direction that doesn't exist, which leaves you stunned in the same room with the creatures which were attacking you and gives you third person messaging about yourself flying in: bug. I don't think shield helps here, either.

Man... its a wonder people actually hunt these things. I'm trying to figure out if/how I can start hunting them(in ratha) and they just seem completely unforgiving.

When I had four malchata on me I put up a BoT, boy was that a mistake. Every single action each malchata took during the duration of that banner was the first type of attack you described. When they see a banner they don't twiddle their thumbs, or leave the room, or retreat from combat, just sand attack, sand attack, sand attack... I was literally stuck in RT the entire duration of it.

Not know the details of BoT, that would seem like a bug to me though. It's a damaging attack and that's covered by BoT, no?

<<BoT thing>>

You know, shortly after writing my previous post I noticed the same thing with a safe room in the Shard malchata area. Apparently they still use their special attacks in no-violence rooms: bug again.

Hunting them in Shard. For me, I just have to take a break and get the pet empath to clean me up. Not the best option, but the learning rate is fantastic for me.

P.S. I shield block sometimes as well. I had not idea there were different sand attacks. Darn hard creature at less than 70 reflex apparently.

I've gotten it fairly often with a hand held buckler.
