Warklin have this issue(near xing). Area wont support more than 7 mobs, so if there are 4 hunters in there and one guy is dancing with 4, you are lucky to ever get even one warklin.

I'll certanily echo this. It's a frustrating place to try and hunt, and I wish I could effectively train there more frequently, but this exact reason makes it an awful hunting ground.

It's tricky in that 3.0 has made it easier to backtrain weapons (at least in my experience). So not only does it take longer to kill critters, but people are using lower-skilled weapons, thanks to mastery skills, which leads to them killing things even more slowly (if at all). And since the idea of making dancing with more creatures more dangerous never really happened, people seem to just sit there forever not killing anything. This is generally fine in areas that don't have creature spawn caps/where creatures swarm, but this is not such an area.

Let me first apologize for the snarky tone. It's just super frustrating dealing with an issue that has literally been around for 5+ years.

Second, I didn't post the creature because it doesn't seem to matter. There has been hundreds of posts with the same issue with various creatures over the years (and very recently too) with nothing being done.

But sure, I'll give you a couple to look at. (As I'm typing this up I haven't seen a Blood Wolf in 15 minutes, 45 seconds. I have a timer) Two other people are dancing with 4.

I think you are going to see an exasperation of this issue because creatures are now harder to kill, so even if people aren't "dancing," they are still taking more spawn then their "share." e.g. 3 spawn per hunter, they dance with 4. etc.

Some math from this post: (re creature spawn)

2 people = 6 total. A gets 4, B gets 2.
3 people = 9 total. A gets 4, B gets 4, C gets 1. (C's 1 spawn isn't guaranteed to spawn in his room with a high likelhood of spawning elsewhere.)
4 people = 12 total. A gets 4, B gets 4, C gets 4, D gets 0.

I'm gonna just say that when we had an issue with spawn in assassins and intercessors, Raesh kinda fixed it. It was clear he read the post initially and if he had just been given the area he may have just looked at it, upped it and you would have been happy.

I think you need to let this sort of issue play out in an organic fashion, you're just creating more work for the GMs when they already have 100,000 bugs to work on and we all know if you post about it they are going to fix it right away when other items have priority. Bugs / issues should be found casually and in an organic way not but actively identifying how many people are dancing with certain amounts of creatures.

Players have been complaining about creature AI, and spawn rates forever.

Recently, more than ever, the squeaky wheel of DR is getting the grease. He might as well take advantage.

It's not hurting any of you if the spawn rates are fixed.

Frankly what's needed is an audit of all hunting areas, which is an extremely time consuming process.

The problem is that we didn't want to do it before 3.0 in most cases until we saw where that left us. 3.0 is out now, but there are still some significant balance issues being resolved so I'm loath to sink the month+ that this project would likely take (And that's a lowball estimate if it was done right) only to find out we need something else going on.

As it is I'm willing to looking into specific hunting ares when I have the time (the next week or so I definitely will not have the time), but I've also got a more universal solution in proposals that I'd also like to have done before said audit happens.

I will say that next up on my list is the zombie head-hunter area - I've had permission to make a number of tweaks there since before 3.0 launched, it just got set aside in all that chaos. Further we've got a new hunting area I think many of you will enjoy really close to release (Literally it just needs a few hours of my time to finish, but again - the next week my dev time is in extremely short supply).

What in the world is snarky about posting a bunch of links when the question was about hunting grounds that need to be looked at? Obviously no one has the entire list known off the top of their head, so all you can do is peruse the forums for other people posting the same issue. And if you're going to make claims based off other information provided from other people, you're always better off citing your sources

I understand people sticking up for Raesh who is in fact awesome and actually did address this issue for specific hunting grounds, but that doesn't change the fact that this major problem has been ignored by other GMs for years. If anything, the issue could stand a bit more snark until it gets the attention it deserves

He... he linked to a post by you. It was from June of last year asking if there's an upper limit to mobs in a hunting area.

It didn't exactly go with his general complaint.

That Sprite post was indeed started by you Krooner. So no, I did not "seriously call out sprites," you did.

He didn't, actually. He asked about an upper cap on critter spawn when a hunting area is particularly crowded. It is not anywhere near the same thing as spawn rates being too low. Anyone who thinks the spawn rate in Sprites needs to be raised is just being silly.

If you read his post... You would notice his spawn rate was too low. There wasn't enough details to determine whether it was "dancing with 3-4 issue," but it definitely could have been, so I added it to the list.

"Assuming I even get a room, I'm not going to get more than a tiny trickle of sprites, and everyone I can see nearby within reason only has the normalish 1-4 on them (so no empaths or thieves doing random things and getting 15 on them at once)."

The links were less comical to me than the material right after the quasi-apology honestly.... it's just one of those really funny parts of human interaction to me: when people apologize, but do so in such a way that makes it really other people's faults, and that they are just the victim if you really think about it, etc...

The links provide some useful context, though Raesh already said they need to audit the hunting grounds which is more useful than historical info from pre 3.0 (and whatever other tweaks were applied since those posts).

While a hunting area audit would be helpful, I can't help but wonder if it isn't just spawn mechanics and creature AI that need the tweaking.

It really boils down to two problems:

Problem #1
The problem that most people have is spread across every hunting ground. It's when a spot becomes trendy that the problem is uncovered.

Most areas work on a X*Y, with a limit of Z. That limit Z is supposedly in place to keep the sky from falling.

The problem is that as soon as X*Y>Z then each hunter gets less than Y creatures. If Y is less than the creature engagement cap then the problem gets worse even quicker.

Problem #2

In hunting areas that contain a lot of rooms (orcs/warcats, basilik, forest geni - to name a few) critters can spawn several rooms away (I've seen them using HUNT up to 5 rooms away, but this may be because they moved away from me after spawn).

If you are the only person in the area (reverse issue of #1) then you can be left standing in a room for several minutes before one decided to show up to the party. 2nd tier snow goblins (around 8 rooms?) has this problem.

In the short term #1 is the greater of two evils because #2 can be "band-aided" using HUNT and chasing them around.

While I don't completely understand the spawn mechanisms, to me it would make a lot of sense to vastly increase the Z variable (probably to Y*#of rooms in area) and make critters more likely to spawn in occupied rooms than non-occupied rooms.

If my general ideas are already the basics live in the system, then maybe it is a area by area audit that is need to 1) increase the Z, and 2) increase the % chance to spawn in an occupied room

Either way, while I can appreciate that no one wanted to work on it until after 3.0 and now that 3.0 is out there are balance issues, bugs, and what not this issue was not something that just appeared out of no where. And while I can appreciate that the sins of GMs past are really not the fault of the GMs present, there are "powers that be" that have been here since inception that could have made it a priority.

Just to again underline that Warklin need help

This area has 10 rooms, but cant seem to support more than two people hunting at once. I feel like this has been brought up a lot and fixing it would involve changing a variable from 7 (the maximum this area supports) to something more realistic like 14 (this area is hunted by a good number of people). I've been in a 4 exit room in the center for about 20 minutes waiting for a single spawn.
