< Trying weakly, you chop a two-handed sword at a croff pothanit. A croff pothanit attempts to evade, avoiding only some of the blow. The sword lands an obliterating hit (Hodierna winces!) that explodes the heart and lungs with a bone-shattering blow to the chest.
The croff pothanit falls to the ground and lies still.

I've been gone from DR for a long time. Before I left I'd never heard of anyone but high-ranking Barbarians and Paladins hitting like this.
I'm getting a lot of massive strikes too... this is fun.

I think I just topped myself, maybe...
< Moving poorly, you step backward and then slice at a striped badger. A striped badger attempts to dodge, only slightly avoiding the blow. The sword lands an overwhelming strike (Oooh, the next generation of badgers are going to feel that!) that rips through muscle and organs, cutting the foe cleanly in half.
The striped badger falls to the ground and lies still.

[Roundtime 9 sec.]
That's new to me, for sure.
I've been getting a lot of earth-shaking strikes too. It's good for my self esteem.

<says to himself, "I can beat that!">

< Moving poorly, you step backward and then slice at a ship's rat. A ship's rat fails to evade, mis-stepping and blundering into the blow. < Moving poorly, you chop a two-handed sword at a ship's rat. A ship's rat fails to dodge, failing miserably. The sword lands a spine-rattling strike that cuts deeply into the rat's groin.

Isn't this stuff a bit dramatic for a first circle Barbarian with 11 in 2HE? Hard hits and heavy strikes never hurt anyone... errr... well they do but... nevermind...

It isn't unusual for crits like that to occur, even when you are at a low circle. The reason for this is that the damage message that you get (earth-shaking, obliterating, etc.) represents the percentage by which you reduced your opponent's HP rather than a fixed amount of HP.
For example, if you deal 50 HP (made up numbers) of damage to a ship's rat that has low stamina and 25 total HP, you might deal an apocalyptic blow to the rat. On the other hand, if you dealt 50 HP to a creature with much more stamina and a higher maximum, like an asaren celpeze, the blow might only come out as a heavy strike, even though the amount of damage that you did in terms of HP is technically the same.
