I prefer my messages defaulted to collapse, but when I press the collapse button before all the messages for the page are loaded in only the messages that are so far loaded at the time I press the collapse button are collapsed. The other messages are still expanded. I have to wait till all messages for the page are loaded to press collapse for all the messages to collapse. But once done, I love the easiness and quickness of reading individual messages from the collapsed list.
It's not buggy. You're doing it wrong.
You can change your default to Collapsed under Options at the top.
