So being me I couldn't remember the syntax for using target at a critter.

Apparently if you put a non-zero number after the critter you prep the spell but can't cast anything.

>targ burn 10 at hog 1
That won't affect your current attunement very much.
You raise an arm skyward, chanting the equation of the Burn spell.
But you're already preparing a spell!

You gesture at a musk hog.
Currently lacking the skill to complete the pattern, your spell fails completely.

>targ burn 10 at hog 0

That won't affect your current attunement very much.
You raise an arm skyward, chanting the equation of the Burn spell.
You begin to weave mana lines into a target pattern around a musk hog.

You gesture at a musk hog.
A brilliant beam descends from the sky and shrinks into a tiny point centered on a musk hog.
The beam completely incinerates the head!
The musk hog falls to the ground and lies still.
Roundtime: 1 sec.

>targ burn 10 at hog 50976
That won't affect your current attunement very much.
You raise an arm skyward, chanting the equation of the Burn spell.
But you're already preparing a spell!
>pow
Xibar and Katamba are dominant, while Yavash's influence is weak.
Moonlight Manipulation and Psychic Projection spells are favored.
You have fully prepared the Burn spell at ten mana.
Roundtime: 3 sec.

>cast
You gesture at a musk hog.
Currently lacking the skill to complete the pattern, your spell fails completely.

After a lot of digging and analysis, the current recommendation is "then don't put a non-zero number after the critter"...

Unless there's a reason I'm missing?

Only reason I could see is that syntax errors aren't typically reinforced with semi success messaging. And the failure messaging on casting indicates a lack of skill not improper use of syntax. It is something that can be easily missed in the scroll of everyday gaming.

An interesting question is why does it work with a zero there?

And in a related note: would it be possible to get the target verb updated to allow called shots? Currently, if we want to target the left arm of something, we have to prep and then target, which doesn't seem terribly intuitive next to the wonderfulness of the target verb.
