I have seen a lot of cats for sale, but no kittens. Is it possible to buy a kitten like the one in the Strand Communal Center? If not, will it ever be?

Re: Kittens on 11/01/2003 10:10 AM CST
We've talked about this before, and have run into the reality vs. fantasy wall on it. If it's a kitten when you buy it, how does it stay a kitten? Do you have a fountain of youth in your home that she drinks from, or do we just suspend that part of our pseudo-reality? Are you constantly trading in kittens when the kitten becomes a cat so you always have a kitten, and if so, what happens to the poor cats who used to have a loving home and are now kicked to the curb?
One thing that might be interesting (but I have no idea how feasible it would be code-wise) would be buying a pet as its young version and watching it grow - but that would open up the possibility of coming home one day and finding Fluffy dead of old age and needing replacement.. and different lifespans - You'd need a new cricket every month, while a dog or cat might last 18 years... And what do you DO with your dead pet, anyway? Give it to the necromancer's guild as a payoff so they don't do bad things to you? (I've got this horrid song from Dr. Demento running through my head now: "Dead puppies aren't much fun!")
So the answer is, at this time, we don't have any sort of concrete plan to do kittens or puppies, but it is an interesting thing to ponder for sometime in the future (definitely not something current code would support).
Hope that helps a little!

In this situation, I'd rather go with pseudo-reality and have the option to buy a kitten as a pet if I were to choose that. There's a ton of things in DR that are not real, but more pseudo-real. For instance, we as characters cannot die IG. Should we make it real and be able to die via this manner? No, it's crossing the line of fun and game functions. Although you can still play the game without a pet, I still think that type of scenario can be used to justify opening up the ideas for what pet is allowable.
Hopefully, the idea to expand certain pets will be more open during around DR 2.
Just my opinion, at the moment.

Pet shifting? I like that idea. Or, is it possible to get a pet alteration? Like, I buy a cat, but I don't like the spots, could I use an LTB to get calico or something? Or would the mechanics be all wrong for that?

It's a fantasy land, and everybody wants a perpetual kitten. I say we have them. Magic, right? Somebody think of something! Maybe they had a youth spell cast on them, they could even be thousands of years old. Or perhaps they are dwarf or hafling kitties...
That, and catnip should be foragable.

3 thousand years ago, Sidhlot (At least 3k years old if I remember), with the help of some of the top mages and scholars in the Seven Star Empire, perfected a necromantic and alchemical technique that granted them immortality. Sidhlot then became so lustful for power that he enlisted Jomay's shifting powers to turn all those that knew the secret into kittens, for sale in pet shops.

The solution is simple. Geneticly engineered perma-kittens. Doomed to be 6 weeks old for the rest of their lives.

Ok, throwing myself into the fire. I'm not good at writing this stuff, or knowledgable about lifesculpting and elvish history and such (as it applies to the realms), but at least I think I have an imagination. My time scale could be way off too... {blithers}
Elven Kitten
This kitten is from a breed of cats, who where close companions of some of the mountain elves, and formed very close bonds with them. But the elves invariably outlived them, and on account of their sorrow, they desired that the cats would live long lives as they did. In their grief on witnessing numerous passings, and due to the close bonds they formed, they unwittingly began to change the cats over time, as if lifesulpted. They began to take somewhat elven features, most notably ears which where more elvish than cat-like, and a much increased lifespan. Kittens remain as such for nearly 30(?) years before they are no longer kittens, and remain as playful as any kitten throughout.
Another idea here, is that you can also buy an elven cat, which could be 100 years old or more. (and really expensive, I bet). Who knows what characteristics it would posess after that time.
Anyway, there's your justification!
Re: Kittens on 11/02/2003 12:44 PM CST
they'd need an elven name =)
polijen kitten (slow kitten)
uzacen sari kitten (long life kitten)
meindegun kitten (day-after-tommarow kitten)
shonchac kitten (limitless kitten)
camilen kitten (perfect kitten)
There might be weird grammer involved, don't know much about Ilithic, but those are food for thought.

Oooh, somebody who actually knows what they're talking about! Now we are getting somewhere.

Re: Kittens on 11/03/2003 07:34 PM CST
Wow, all this thinking...
Here's what I see, though. My cat is always a cat. Never "an old cat" or "a dead cat". NPC critters running around never age. We (PC's) age but only on the most superficial level. So having a kitten remain a kitten seems a perfectly consistent plan. Suspending a reality which is already mostly suspended (aging) so as to favor gameplay.
If someone wants their cat to age, they can go buy a new older one and say it's the same cat. I'd suggest a new/modified pet shop with way more descriptors, constantly rotating. Maybe a dozen colors, a dozen descriptors (gaunt, plump, etc.), a few breeds, a few ages, and a few different animal types (changing ever few days). Leave the weird/rare pets the way they are now.
a young spotted Rissan dog
an old black retriever
a full-grown orange-striped cat
a blue-grey heavy-set kitten
etc.
Perhaps let these "normal" pets be fairly inexpensive (to facilitate aging via buying, if one so desires it).
Just my thoughts.

interesting, you're saying we can't have kittens because of possibly "aging" factors, yet, my therengian paladin has a baby wolf spider running around in his house...
<compares the relative average age expectancies between cats and spiders.... hmmm>.
I say let 'em have kittens, and puppies, and dead puppies....
hmmm, i'll shaddup now.

Well seein that these same three cats have been in the premie caves for three months or so, i think you kitten heads should have to wait a year before another cat gets put there. In the mean time, roll out the puppies, or wolf pups! id hate to think you were all kitten-centric and i am confident you all would support the release of young animals first, since its the idea you all want right?

You can always just "suspend disbelief" and create something, but it's fun to have some lore to back it up. That's what gives this game depth. Besides, you are just not going to get any cuter than an elven kitten. Found something on the net somebody sketched. Look at the ears!
