So, I'm mining and mining until my fingers bleed.
System: 4 rooms - Mine each one complete, Pickaxe used unless rare metal found, then pickaxe until metal followed by shovel. Prospect Careful after metal is hit. Prospect Danger when the messaging clues in to it.
Questions:
1) Anyone want to clue me in if I am an the right ballpark of methods?
2) Does foraging skill help enough that always having Wolf Scent up would help?
3) Do any other stats help that I should keep buffed?
4) How often is rare metal found? I find about 1-2 veins of rare (mainly darkstone & platinum per 6-8 hours)
5) How often is very rare found? I have yet to find a vein of it, just the occasional lump or so.
6) Is there a market for Iron, Covellite, Oravir, Gold, or Silver? Right now I just keep the Plat, plus any of the others.
Thanks for the help folks.

>>1) Anyone want to clue me in if I am an the right ballpark of methods?
Sounds about right. Some people might prospect careful after the room runs out of metal because they feel it increases their chance of a random rare drop. Some don't feel like shovels and pickaxes work that much differently.
>>2) Does foraging skill help enough that always having Wolf Scent up would help?
It seems that foraging helps the SIZE, if not the frequency, of getting things out of the room you're mining. So someone with low amounts of foraging might generally get tiny/small, while someone with high amounts of foraging might generally get large/huge.
>>3) Do any other stats help that I should keep buffed?
Strength helps boost the chance of a lower RT.
>>4) How often is rare metal found? I find about 1-2 veins of rare (mainly darkstone & platinum per 6-8 hours)
That sounds accurate.
>>5) How often is very rare found? I have yet to find a vein of it, just the occasional lump or so.
Also kinda accurate, I think.
>>6) Is there a market for Iron, Covellite, Oravir, Gold, or Silver? Right now I just keep the Plat, plus any of the others.
Gold and Silver are great for Work Orders, just like Platinum. Gold is also good for weighing mixes (like Platinum). Oravir is useful, but common enough that people might not really proactively go and buy it. You'd probably do better if you convert your iron to mid or high steel. Covellite might be too specific, use-wise, to really have a market.

I also keep my gold and silver because there is little doubt that they will be popular when the jewelry making system comes into play, and particularly the gold is "hard" to come by (relative to silver and even platinum for me).

2) Does foraging skill help enough that always having Wolf Scent up would help?
Foraging also helps increase the quality of what you mine, when I started I had about 60 ranks and I was pulling stuff that was noticeably lower in quality that the stuff I'm pulling out now. Probably not an issue at your level though. Also, I have noticed generally that as foraging, perception, and appraisal have inceased, prospecting careful is more likely to find a 'large' amount of extra material than a 'small' one.
6) gold is pretty much the same as plat because of weight and I have seen deeds on trader tables selling for quite a bit.

Others have answered your questions pretty well, but a few things to add:
First, I'm in the camp who likes to wait until the metal runs out before prospecting careful. The reasoning is that a) it's known that you get more rare drops out of the room as you get near empty, and thus mining it out first might mean that you're in that 'rare zone' for longer, and b) if you're going along and blow out the room, you still have a prospect careful up your sleeve.
Also, I think you're right on with the pickaxe/shovel.
>>2) Does foraging skill help enough that always having Wolf Scent up would help?
As others have said, foraging helps. I'd do it if I were you, and pick up some foraging/perception cjs and CV runes for those rares. Every little bit helps with those, especially when 1 extra vol can equal 20 plat or more. I can hook you up with some cjs if you like.
>>5) How often is very rare found? I have yet to find a vein of it, just the occasional lump or so.
Same here. Unless you count electrum. :(
>>6) Is there a market for Iron, Covellite, Oravir, Gold, or Silver?
As Pureblade said, silver is great for work orders because they'll pay you well for silver items.
Gold is actually even better for item weighting than platinum (I hear), because it does the same job but the item ends up with a lower appraisal (and therefore lower repair costs). I know smiths definitely buy both gold and platinum.
Caraamon at the least has said he will buy 99 quality high-carbon steel for 10 plat per 200 vol. I've found steel a real pain to make but you could look into it.

Best bet is probably contracting with a local forger. Since they go through the stuff a lot its easier for them to buy it off of someone than it is for them to use the services at the forging society.
Rather than trying to sell it off to whoever is currently looking for it as a lot of people who might be potential customers for the steel might not bother to actually go and check.
I personally don't but I don't forge enough weapons in a day that I can't live off my own supply of iron.

Err, I said it was a pain to make, not to sell. Can only make 50 vol at a time, requires juggling a lot of coal nuggets. Blah.
I do still make some though. I suppose soon enough I'll ask around and see if anyone wants to contract.

Wait, I'm confused. How would prospect careful help at all if you blow out the room and the vein of rare metal disappears?

If you do a prospect careful after destroying a vein, it gives you more of the metal you were mining. Of course, since I've never been fortunate enough to find a vein of rare, I can only say it works with common metals.

> Prospecting careful can ruin a room? Is this a super low skill failure type of situation?
No, other botches might ruin the room. But if they do, you can still prospect careful and get some metal. If you used the prospect careful already, then you've lost the extra metal as well as what was in the room to start with.

Re: Mining Woes on 10/20/2011 04:31 AM CDT
Or, on a rare vein, you can prospect careful right at the start and prospect danger after every mine and not have to worry about a botch at all. It does take longer to mine a room out that way, but it beats waiting to prospect careful, then find out the room changed metals on you before you had the chance to do it, just because you had it mined down low enough to be considered mined out. I believe a redname did mention that it doesn't have to be mined completely out for that to happen, just real close to mined out.
