...from someone who never read the books. I haven't seen anyone post about this yet so I guess I'll ask. In the beginning, what happens to Gandalf? At first he and that thing are falling miles into the earth and then they are back up at the top of the mountain? And then he dies I guess and all of a sudden I feel like I'm watching Stargate for some reason (as we travel through space). Then I guess he comes back in another body or something? I hope the book explains this more.

In the book, Gandalf describes the fall and chase with the Balrog a bit better. They end up coming out of the mines and fighting on the mountainside, which gets partially broken by the Balrog's fall.

What exactly happens to Gandalf after that is not much clearer in the books, although it can be guessed that he died but was returned to Middle Earth by Eru, so that he could finish the tasks for which he was made.

Eru is sort of the most powerful of the gods. Sometimes called "The One."
