I realize that the vast majority of things that are pilfered need to go "poof" if they are dropped, to avoid litter, etc, etc.

However, can there be a way of "tagging" an item not to poof on you without waiting an extraordinary amount of time if the item, in order to be used as intended, has to be dropped for a second?

The specific instance is cigars. Now, if an olvi is to smoke the cigar, you have to drop it in order to light it <unless you have one of those fancy quest-prize lighters, which my olvi, being a young character, doesn't have at this point in time. In order to light it you have to drop it, then get out your blade and flint, and light it.

Well, the cigar went Poof as soon as it was dropped. What's an olvi to do?

Will it still poof if you stow it before dropping it?

There's supposed to be a "underfoot" slot sooner or later, but I'm surprised something would poof in an empty room that quickly. In my experience, there was a lot of time between being told "hey this room is going to be cleaned up" and it actually happening, and a room would never just randomly wipe itself with people in it and one thing dropped.

Gonifs problem, restated: she stole a cigar, and dropped it to light it.

Non-container items flagged as recently stolen will auto-poof (with some spiffy messaging about hiding it) when dropped, because people would just steal;steal;drop;drop and clutter up a place with junk.

She wants to know how to circumvent this problem, without waiting out the timer. I would suggest trying to bite the cigar, and see if modifying it from its original state prevents the auto-poof.

I've never tried it, but is it possible to light the cigar with a burning branch or something that's already on fire? If that doesn't work you could try to find a warmage and ask them to light it with the fire cantrip.

Surprised lighting mechanics can't work with a worn knife. Arguably you'd be holding the cigar in your mouth when you light it so "flint+cigar+(worn knife)" should work just fine.

Right. there should be a mouth slot. (all jokes aside there should be for stuff like this)

But I agree that it would be neat if a player could protect an item that was on the ground from the janitor. (ground slot?)

Does "guard" protect it? If so, then if you could guard the item before you drop it, that would work.

There is something of a mouth slot, but it's not visible.

You spit some gum into your right hand.

You glance down to see some gum in your right hand and nothing in your left hand.

You toss some gum into your mouth and begin to chew, releasing the 100% natural leech flavor.

You chew your gum.

You work carefully to remove the sticky gum from your face.

You could light the cigar from anything else burning, if you don't want to risk dropping the cigar. Light a stick/log/torch, light cigar with stick/log/torch.

Not IG to check but you could also try PUTting the cigar on a table or something, then lighting it.
