So miss Laniea has about 45 appraisal. I can't get it moving appraising creatures.
Is there a base amount you need before you can start learning this way?

As it has been said, I've found that it is easiest to fill a gem pouch and simply appraise that. I could appraise creatures very well as a barbarian until I had 70 to 80 ranks. However, I still do most my learning from gem pouches.
Currently I have 114 ranks of appraisal and I've been play slightly under two months.

I got my first 100 ranks from gem pouches really easy. After that they started to really slow down, but that's when I discovered critter apping.

after each kill in my hunting script shot me from 100 to 215ish, staying consistently above all my other combat skills (armor prime, weapons/lore secondary).

>>Eh, slightly disagree, plus rank requirements depend entirely on stats and guild.
Actually, I've seen that statement to be pretty true regardless of guild or stats. I distinctly remember trying critter appraisal on a Bard and a Barbarian, the former being lore primary with a heavy focus on mental stats and the latter being lore tertiary with a heavy focus on physical stats.
The result, for me at least, was pretty much the same: I couldn't get appraisal moving well, even with a tertiary pool, until about 70 ranks, when I could start getting offense and defense appraisals. Now appraisal is mind locked constantly on my Barbarian even though appraisal is 60 ranks above his highest weapon.

I'm pretty sure that it's a hard rank requirement to get both the offensive and defensive lines in critter appraisal. One happens at 30 something the other at 76 ranks (I forget which comes first). I always found it odd that there was a hard req.. I believe that it's independant of guild/stats, too.

Hasn't it been mentioned at some point that Dart or someone was looking into making it easier for smaller players to know what they were up against?

> Just use a gem pouch until then.
You can also use lumpy bundles(creature skins). I'm using them almost exclusively to train my appraisal right now. And they work amazing. I don't even bother using gem pouches anymore.
Especially with the gem changes, pouches dont have as much value anymore.
Make sure its not a tied bundle, it's night and day the teaching difference.
