Other than the damage type + secondary effect, is there a difference between these spells? As in, will abandon kill faster than pyre in most situations, or will pyre train better than ABAN?

That's great. Thank you.

So Pyre = Aban for overall damage; Pyre + Will > Aban. Pyre + weapons + will >> Aban? Pyre can kill undead.

Aban > Pyre when you want a cyclic TM that also drains fatigue, or want the spirit attack as a DFA. It's a shame the fatigue hit isn't debilitation. That would at least make aban a better trainer.

Will doesn't directly increase the damage of Pyre (other than indirectly via TM buff). Instead, it swaps the Impact damage for Cold damage. Whether that's better or worse depends on the resistances of your target.

Aban isn't DFA.

Really? I didn't think spirit attacks could be blocked by armor. If it's not DFA then it feels like the slot cost is way too high.

DFA is often a bad feature of a spell now. It just lets you bypass the targets shield. In the new combat system you get mangled with only one valid defines and, since parry is ineffective against spells, targets get a bonus to evasion to compensate. As a result, unless they are using and shield AND their shield is >> evasion DFA doesn't do much. Furthermore if their evasion is >>> shield it is actually worse to use DFA.

Aban is still very useful because the fatigue-drain is a good debuff on top of the damage.

Also, in my limited experience there is something about a spirit attack that makes it feel better than a typical TM attack. Maybe it's because it relies heavily on Cha, which is typically strong in Bards. Or maybe it has to do with the amount of "HP" a critter has in spirit vs. physical. Of course my feeling is totally unscientific and you should try it out for yourself.

I don't believe Cha factors in at all. It's a TM attack, so it uses Disc for accuracy and Int+Wis for damage.

Ah, you're right, I was thinking of Spirit attacks.
