I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm missing to get this spell. I'm quite sure I'm doing the quest correctly, yet when I make my offering after learning the prayer I can't get past the step of studying the magma, I get this message:

You think you see some meaning within the flow of lava, but it is too abstract and convoluted for you.
Roundtime: 5 sec.

Am I missing some requirements? I have Fist of Faenella, am 52nd circle, 377 Holy Magic, 313 Arcana, 199 Theurgy, and 9 open spell slots. I was always under the impression that the requirements were only like ~250 PM.

It's been a few years since I've done the quest, but I'm pretty sure that's the message for not having enough PM. I'm not sure how much you'd need now. Maybe it's checking other skills?

And I'm not sure if this affects anything, but you might try buffing it a +PM spell (if they still exist) or a strong MM prediction.

In modern DR, it's either going to be a PM or a TM skill check. You'll need roughly 250-300 of either?

Hmm, I guess it could be TM. I have 192 ranks TM. As previous mentioned I have 377 ranks PM. That seems a little out of whack for a 40th circle spell.

FoU is not actually a 40th circle spell. It's closer to an 80th, if I remember correctly. However, it's deliberately set with a low req so that you can quest for it way before you 'should' be able to use it, because DR is a skill based game and some people like to train magic but not circle.

Really, we need to sit down and assess what we're doing with circle reqs, because many of them are relics from ye olde days. But that's not a project on anyone's table at the second.

Cleric quest in particular are the worst for emphasis on 'insanely high skill requirements relative to the circle you're allowed to do this'.

FWIW, with nearly 300 TM my Cleric can't stuff much additional mana in FoU.

My last cleric had 250-300 pm/tm, and could cast the spell, maybe, on good days. He could get off 1 shot and then basically had to fully recover. He was 50th, and well exceeded the magic reqs per circle.

Well, for everyone's information, I was able to finally learn the spell at exactly 200 ranks TM. With 380 in PM I can still only put about 5 extra mana into the spell to reliably cast it, but it's working great for me. It's not as good as harm horde but not everything out there is undead.
