Something I've noticed when I have PoM up, after I regain all my mana and concentration, for some reason when I try to get near capping a spell I find myself backfiring a lot. Even if I try 2 mana from my discern cap I still backfire a lot. This doesn't happen without PoM. Anyone else notice this?

I notice this effect with every magic user that I've played, backfiring at the discern cap even with full conc/etc. I don't think it happens any more with the cleric (who always has POM up) than it does with, say, a moon mage or an empath.
That effect doesn't happen anymore when I am past that spell's cap. E.g., my cleric never backfires on a full Bless cast in the same situation.

DISCERN mana cap values are just estimates, since there are too many variables to accurately predict with precise certainty. It's usually a slight overestimate, so knocking a couple mana off the value is a good bet unless you can easily cap the spell.

Honestly, I've never found DISCERN worth using. I've just experimented and found my caps by trial and error, up to spell cap.
I can only cast it anywhere near consistently at 90 mana. That is with POM up. I had no idea what DISCERN said until I read this post. ;)

The Shield of Light spell creates a blessed shield, keeping it in existence as long as the pattern holds. This divine shield is very light, can be shaped somewhat, and will also allow the cleric to block attacks with greater accuracy than they would otherwise with mundane shields. |
This is a non-battle spell that can be cast on a single target. Non-battle spells have significantly longer preparation times than battle spells. It can be cast without a target. It requires a minimum of fifteen mana streams, and can expand to a maximum of one hundred mana streams woven into it. To begin to be able to cast this spell, you will need to reach the rank of an experienced practitioner. By the time you have mastered this spell, you will be ranked as a master in your abilities as a caster. It requires the Utility and Augmentation skills to cast effectively. Before you can learn this spell, you must know Divine Radiance and Minor Physical Protection. It will also cost three spell slots. |
The spell requires at minimum 15 mana streams and you think you can reinforce it with 78 more, for a total of 93 streams. |

<<The spell requires at minimum 15 mana streams and you think you can reinforce it with 78 more, for a total of 93 streams.
<<I can only cast it anywhere near consistently at 90 mana.
That's a pretty typical result.
The way I think about it to help make it make more sense from an IC perspective (and this is just a hand wavy explanation to justify it, not an actual explanation as to what the number means) is the discern cap is the absolute highest amount of mana that you could potentially put into a spell and still have a chance to successfully cast it. E.g. it might have a 90% backfire rate at the discern cap, but one more mana and it's 100% backfire.
