Sorry didn't have time to read all that.
Minor addition I would like.
Put in a challenge like you have for spell prepping, they need enough pp and perception to even know you took the spell from them.

Interesting idea, though I'm not sure how practical it'd be between casting messaging (they'll know you did something) and Stormfront's UI.

Hmm...
Willy Warmie traces an arcane sigil in the air preparing the Fireball Spell
Cassie Cleric casts Idon's theft on Willy and begins preparing the Fireball spell.
Willy feels a jolt as suddenly the spell is wrenched from him.
Willy sees Cassie targeting him!
Willy says, "Uh-oh!"
Sometimes the key to happiness is not assuming it is locked in the first place- Ziggy

If Idon's Theft goes through as you want it to Armifer will mixed mana penalties apply? I guess I mean will a cleric blow up if they steal a life mana spell? Also I might have missed this but is it only going to be TM spells? If the first question is a no and the second is a yes I'd love to steal some healing spells hehe

Mixed mana penalty will apply in any conceptualization of this spell. As usual, do not meddle with forces beyond your ken if you're attached to your current limbs.

What if you cast EWH on your arm and it blew your arms off as a result?
I mean... Irony? Or could we just fudge a little, have the spell work, have it restore the (now missing) arm, likely badly scarred, and blow the other one off?

Hmmm, the only thing that I can use to remotely compare this is hiding. If your character doesn't have the perception to see someone hide, you can always watch the room window and see the name disappear (or reappear if you don't see them slip out of hiding).
And while spell stealing is a bit more solid than seeing a character hide (you have to be fast to see a character hide using the room window while spells stay around a lot longer), people aren't always checking the UI like that. Usually (at least for me) it's the messaging that provides 90% of my knowledge of what's going on at the moment. So i'd say this might be a fun thing to add.

Couple things.
One, I follow the UI thing, but it still needs some sort of message from the server to determine what occured right?
Further, let's look at it with a mind toward soemthing called magical stealth. If a person can snipe and not be seen, surely there is a mechanical way to cast at someone that challenges their magical skills. Really, we already have this feature in the whole spell prep challenge thing anyway. It's not that big of a leap is it?
Second, mixed mana thingie.
What if we could hold within AO a spell that transmtued magical energies into something we could wield without the total mixed mana mojo nastiness thing happening. Or what if that was one of our future enchantments? Or what if that was a feature of our future barrier spell thing that has been discussed. As in something that allows a one way valve like a check valve in a water system that stops backflow. We can shoot something out, but our check valve spell stops it from coming back on us.
Now, that would be an interesting feature focus of being magic prime. Seems the whole concept of transmutation would be a nice clerical focus thing.

I don't think mixing Life and Holy guarantees limbs going boom. As I recall last time I tried to cast a Life magic spell it just backfired at minimum power at full prep.
Instead of trying to get around UI issues and all that, what if you 'replaced' their currently prepared spell with a direct copy of the same spell (name and all) which just fizzled on casting. Either that, or basically a one-time HulP which made their next cast of spell XXXX fizzle when cast. No reason to make them stop preparing it, just make it fizzle when it's cast with some messaging about they forgot what they were doing.
Hide the gesture messaging so that there's no outward sign of what happened. Put some skill checks in, and that sounds like it's what people are asking for.
>What if we could hold within AO a spell that transmtued magical energies into something we could wield without the total mixed mana mojo nastiness thing happening.
I'm all for new uses of AO. This is a reasonable idea from a gameplay perspective but I'm not sure it works out from a magic theory perspective -- what if putting a spell in AO guaranteed you don't blow your arms off and releasing a spell from AO had the same guarantee. It vastly increases the overall cost of using the spell but it adds some safety. In addition, it adds some use to an existing spell which a lot of folks seem to find 'meh'.

Maybe you don't actually STEAL the spell, per se, so much as gain control over their casting of it somehow. Misdirection. Then you could have the spell mask that you've stolen it. When they go to cast, they can't (for some unknown reason, could put in some nifty messaging or somesuch). Maybe they could release the spell to prevent you from causing them harm with their own magic, too. Just some ideas.
Re: Idon's Theft addition on 09/22/2008 11:35 PM CDT
I approve of the notion that Clerics are merely prestidigitating their spells in a hand-is-quicker-than-the-eye way, or at least primary-magic-is-quicker-than-power-perception.
This has in-game precedent, as every moon mage who has been ALA'd while perceiving a warrior mage knows.

Maybe not 100% of the time but it's much more likely than any other mana type IIRC.
Armifer, is there any chance that Clerics and their affinity to the Harness Ability might get a bonus to offset the mixed mana penalty a bit?

I'm on the fence. It's a complicated issue both in Teh Fictions and from the technical standpoint.
Sorcerous backlash is currently a bit of a mess. You might notice most of my spell updates recently include some form of "...and tweaked backlash chance." I'm slowly bringing all spells under a consistent scheme for determining backlash, but so far it has been a very low priority, "fix 'um when we're in them for other reasons" sort of thing.
Fiction wise, while you could have a spell (or ability, or enchantment) that helps mitigate an explosion, you can't remove the sorcery from the experience without rewriting the spell. Clear Vision is a Lunar spell, and it will never be fully compatible with Holy until such time as a researcher reverse engineers it and creates a Holy mana Perception booster that happens to look an awful lot like Clear Vision.
Life mana is also a sticky problem. As the fiction is currently written, Life and Holy are simply not meant to mix. Fin. The End. Be it an obscure natural law or the will of the Immortals, "holy necromancy" dies on the vine.
