Hi guys! I'm such a pest, I have some questions.
I'm trying to read these posts to get caught up. I'm not even close so sorry if these have already been asked and answered.
I've been reading that an empath that kills will shock. But on the website under empath info it states that an empath that kills can never heal again. I don't plan to kill but I'd still like to know which is correct.
I get a sick feeling when I "splash" in water. I just think that's odd because I can "kick" in the water and that's ok. I know that splashing is trivial and not the most important thing out there, just wondering why that is.
Please be patient, I'm learning here. :)
Thanks!

No worries, ask as much as you like :)
Apart from the shock scar, which is purely cosmetic, there's no permanent irrevocable penalty to getting shock. Currently you can either wait it out or share it down, but you will regain your empath abilities eventually.
Just as a general note, info on the DR website isn't always 100% up to date, and it's not always written for 100% technical accuracy. It's more of a quasi-IC description. The best sources of info and documentation are these boards, IG help systems (although these are sorely underdeveloped IMO, and some are outdated as well), and user sites such as elanthipedia.

A bit of both. My empath helped another who had killed during the Outcast war by sharing his shock- and he still had to deal with it for months.

The thing about Splash got added when it became possible to Splash naphtha on your opponent and ignite it in battle.
Isn't there a check that could be added so we can have splash-fights again? Similar to the check for being at melee for various commands that have very different effects in and out of combat.

Actually, shock occurs when you get agressive (doing things that by design are meant to cause damage) on something--regardless of whether you actually did any harm or not. A kill is the severest level of penalty, and kills stack. The cap on this is 2 in-game years (about 6 RL months), but sharing allows for an early release on this. Conceptually it's possible to get permanent shock, but as of right now there's no mechanical way (except perhaps for GM meddling as they try to compensate for a lack of mechanics) for a PC to reach that point. This will, of course, change with the upcoming shock rewrite that introduces Complete Insensitivity (aka permanent shock) but even then there's a way back out of that state.

This is a parsing issue that I believe cropped up with some recent change, and basically what is happening is the game is thinking you are trying to SPLASH naptha on someone instead of playing in the water.

Killing shock is not permanent unless shared, just that the current amount of cool-down for unshared shock is impossibly long to wait out.

Does killing shock stack or does a fresh kill merely reset the timer?

All shock stacks, in the sense that your new horrible action doesn't totally replace the consequences of your old horrible action with its own.

Raz waited over a RL year and it never started going away until she had it shared.
After it was shared, it was gone in a few days.

Who helped with the sharing? Sharing shock fills up your transfer pool with an equivalent amount of shock, so I imagine a super-skilled 70-100th empath could take a really large amount of shock in one go whereas I can't really ever manage to grab more than a few hours' worth.

No.
J'Lo, I realize many have said this before me and many will likely say it after to no avail, but please stop posting.

Obseden, would you mind clarifying when you mentioned the kill shock time to us (Plat post) if you meant Elanthian Playing Time (EPT) or Real Life Playing Time (RLPT). I took it to mean RLPT. Others think you meant EPT.
For clarification to readers, all my posts on time are indicative of RLPT. When I say 3 to 4 hours IG time that is playing for 3 to 4 hours, not the Elanthian equivalent of 3 to 4 hours.

Okay, to clarify -
Current System:
You hit something, you get shcok. Hit it again, get more shock.
Kill something, you get maxed shock. It is impossible to go above the maximum amount. Any additional kills simply reset to the maximum amount.
At the moment, it would take just under two years of RL time spent in-game to make the shock go away.
New System:
Killing penalties are reduced.
All shock adds to the timer up to the new maximum.
Once at the maximum, it will take a quest to begin your step back to wholeness.

So, doing the math, the maximum time is somewhere in the neighborhood of 12,300 hours.
Wow.

Most people who have played Empaths for any length of time have shared shock one time or other, so don't be ashamed of asking. Everyone RP's it a bit differently of course but my IG view is that it's a very personal matter, and Farman would only ask for help from family and close friends.
In any event, in the vast majority of cases shock is quite manageable if you can organize enough Empaths together. Maximum shock for killing is another matter though :P

It's only cruel if you know the consequences and the other party or parties do not. Even now with more safeguards in place than ever accidents do happen.
Personally I wouldn't ask someone else's character to share my burden and have turned down offers both in Prime and Plat. I am quite willing to help others out though.
I'm glad Obseden has been willing to answer questions about the current system. It's a tough PAFO.
