So i've never played an empath, ever.
My question is, is there an effective way for empath's to kill creatures? I understand that it won't be through direct attacks, however mind control and pets seems like it kicks more butt than two-for-one happy hour.
Manipulate, the mind control option, was broken when the concentration changes were made and is pretty much unusable until they unbreak it. I believe it is learned at 20th circle, and you have to get another Empath to teach it to you. The Avenger pet seems to work fairly well, but I've only really done low level hunting with it.
However, the Avenger was a temporary fix that was released when Manipulate became unusable. Once Manipulate is usable again the Avenger will most likely either go away or become much less powerful.

Definitely not 20th. I got it at 16th or 17th. I think it's an Empathy requirement, and CJs can help. You learn it if you meet the requirements and are linked to someone while they do it.

>>So is the guardian a viable "hunting" option? And what level is it learned?
Guardian Spirit is a spell. You can learn it as soon as you fulfil all the prereqs.
Unfortunately, the strength of the guardian is based on circle and charisma.
For Empaths who focus heavily on combat, the guardians are not really very useful as they'll get killed anywhere the empath can learn combat skills. Basically all the combat oriented Empaths I've met have had this experience with the avengers.
They're useful for Empaths who are going back to backtrain combat at a relatively high circle (say, you get all the Empath spells at ~50th and decide to focus on combat for lack of anything else to do), or who just want a way to make some coin every now and then without having to rely on tips. If my Empath ever needed money she could take her avenger to morah vines and do pretty well there, but she wouldn't be able to learn combat skills while doing that.
I wish the avengers reflected the skills of the Empath is some way, instead of being based mainly on circle and charisma. Of course, this may already be the case, I'm not privy to the formulas, obviously.

The Guardian Spirit spell has just three reqs:
1)Must be greater than 5th circle (think Obseden said this was a bug)
2)Must know the Sphere of Protection spell
3)Must know the Innocence spell
Mine can quickly take down armed goblins in the non-swarmy area, with me having less than 10 ranks in all my tert skills. I do get hit, but even with only ewh and iwh I'm not at all in any trouble.
J'Lo, I'm a ranger.. I'd believe anything.....

I have been under the impression that the avenger skills are pretty matched up with the Empath's, so I really have only used it in beasties that I can defend against. If you are just training then innocense is awesome to clear out the room but if you are "hunting" the avenger does a good job, since all we really do is block and evade and shove. (although i did shove a musk hog to death once, but it may have come into the room injured)
oh, and don't use one against the undead. nothing more annoying then having to explain that your avenger killed you.

As far as I know, the avenger's skill and the Empaths skill have absolutely no relationship. The strength of the avenger is based on circle and charisma, not skill.
You are certain that the alfar avenger is healthy.
You are certain that that the alfar avenger has an incredible spirit that is healthy.
You are certain that it is about as agile as you are.
You are certain that it is not quite as quick to react as you are.
You are certain that it is about as strong as you are.
Taking stock of its offensive abilities, and defending with an engraved scimitar hilted in flame-kissed gold and holding a warrior's tower shield, you are certain that the alfar avenger is definitely less skilled.
Taking stock of its defensive abilities, and attacking with an engraved scimitar hilted in flame-kissed gold, you are certain that the alfar avenger is a simple opponent.
Szrael's avenger is obliterated in the places that she hunts.

>>Out of curiosity. When you say where you hunt, you mean places you train defenses? What else do you do other then defenses if anything?
I train brawling as well as appraisal and magic in combat as well as defenses. You also learn the weapon you use to parry with when you parry. A good number of Empaths have surprisingly high ranks in non-brawling weapons from doing this. If throwing dirt taught better I'd train that too. Sadly I'm a slacker in the stealth department, but if I wasn't I'd also train that in combat.
Combat is one of the best ways to learn a large number of skills at once, this holds for Empaths as well as it does for combat guilds.

That's not...entirely...accurate. You are very much correct that circle and charisma mostly determine your avenger's abilities in terms of the hidden numbers that Obseden/Reexa/etc can see and tweak, and thus your skill does not mechanically interact with that. However, your skills do determine whether you can dodge/block/parry/reduce the damage from the other critters long enough to let your avenger throw down. In this regard, you're not really at your "proper" place on the critter ladder and are basically wasting your avenger ability (or, on the flip side, your avenger sucks and eventually runs away).
Your other stats and how you train them will affect your skills, which necessarily takes away from the charisma you could have dedicated to your avenger. Ergo, your skills affect your avenger's skills.
DISCLAIMER: THIS POSTER IS NOT A MEMBER OF STAFF AND HIS INFORMATION IS/MIGHT BE WRONG.

ok so now i am looking for clarity on this one, please.
1. strength of avenger is based on your charisma, and circle. the higher your circle and the more charisma the stronger/more powerful the avenger.
2. i train my defenses mostly, so if i can defend against the beastie it allows for the avenger to do it's thing, if i can not, i die and it stands there looking around and fidgeting until my spell wears off or i depart or get raised.
3. if you are facing something that is too big for the avenger it runs away or dies. even if you can defend against it.
is that the jist of it, or am i missing something?

Okay, here is a log of Szrael's avenger in action.
* An ochre la'heke bites at you. You block with a warrior's tower shield.

You are still rather wet, but drying off nicely.
Since you're not feeding enough power into the spell pattern to make it coherent, you quickly work your way to the minimum required.
You close your eyes and breathe deeply, gathering energy for the Guardian Spirit spell.
> cast avenger
You gesture.
Your heart skips a beat as your spell sends a subtle jingling call outward from you in all directions.
With a warrior's calm, a pure white alfar avenger steps in and surveys the area.
The alfar avenger begins to advance on an ochre la'heke.
* An ochre la'heke bites at you. You block with a warrior's tower shield.
An ochre la'heke searches the area.
You move into a position to dodge.
Roundtime: 3 sec.
The alfar avenger closes to pole weapon range on an ochre la'heke.
* An ochre la'heke bites at you. You block with a warrior's tower shield.
The ochre la'heke eyes the room with a baleful glare.
The alfar avenger closes to melee range on an ochre la'heke.
A pure white alfar avenger swings with an unusual black blade at an ochre la'heke.

The ochre la'heke spins around to face a pure white alfar avenger!
An ochre la'heke bites at a pure white alfar avenger. The teeth lands an extremely heavy hit that rips skin and exposes bloody cartilage under the left kneecap!
A pure white alfar avenger scratches his neck and looks around with a distinctive lack of paranoia.
An ochre la'heke bites at a pure white alfar avenger. The teeth lands an extremely heavy hit that cuts the lumbar region just enough to bleed a little!
An ochre la'heke slices wide at a pure white alfar avenger. The teeth lands a massive strike that rips the left leg from the hip socket, making a wet popping sound!
A pure white alfar avenger shrieks and licks its wounds, then gestures. Sparkling blue motes dart around it as it transforms into a deep cerulean butterfly that takes to the skies and flutters away.
So my avenger can't survive even three hits from the creatures I use to train defenses.
