This may have already been covered. I did go back through some posts, but didn't see the answer to my specific question.

I'm a recent returnee. Seems like every time I go away, whenever I come back, something has changed. First it was the bloodworms, now, again its the bloodworms. When I left they taught something, now...nothing. Also of course the skill has been renamed. Anyway, I'm wondering how I go about learning empathy. I saw some posts talking about power walking.

Should I try to do like I do with power perceive and perceive each room as I walk, only instead of perceiving power, perceive health? I've tried going into rats to do it, and thus far, I haven't been able to sense anything using perceive health. At what level will I start? And when will I start being able to learn empathy from this?

Go places where there are PCs or NPCs present and perceive health. There is about a 10 second timer that prevents you from using perceive health too soon. But, you will learn much better if you go from room to room checking out the health in various areas.

You learn both empathy and power perception from doing this. You need both empathy and power perception to percieve lives and state of health. I am not sure what the minimum is, though.

But, yes, it is that simple. Just beware of overwhelming your senses...it can cause a stun. It's a good idea to not do perceive health in an extremely crowded area during an invasion, just in case you are stunned by it.

That stun is a big drawback. I'm not sure what I like least: the stun or the fact that we don't have (so far as a know) a way to know we'll be stunned before we're stunned (see, if you have a lot of empathy/pp, you will sense rooms that are too far away to peer into).

I think the base mana of the room also slightly affects getting stunned when using perc health. The higher the mana the more overwhelming the sensation. I get stunned in higher mana rooms with x number of people but don't in a low mana room with the same number of people who were in the high mana room.

>When I left they taught something, now...nothing

actually...
this probally should read 'When I left they taught something, now...not nearly as much'.

When I was up in red leeches oh, two weeks back, I was still able to get my empathy (savant+) to muddled and my first aid (expert+) a bit higher than that (wasn't paying as close attention to it, sorry I can't be more specific). I only stayed in there for maybe 15-20 minutes though. I feel that I would have been able to lock FA if I had stayed longer.

And, in mapping out the albino leeches in Throne City, I know I got moving a little from just 2 or 3 of them too.

I am planning on heading back up there to do some more testing with the black leeches as soon as Ariwin get's his nerve back up to go with me. That area is still way too dangerous for one person. However, when I was able to drag him about, it did look like I could learn a tad better, albeit the learning would be offset by the time it took to heal up his chronic diseases and to tend respective back leeches.

Right now, for me, the best methods in order to learn empathy are:
-empathy walking
-healing patients
-blood critters

However, to say that blood critters no longer teach anything is in my opinion an exageration. I still feel that they are a viable way to train empathy, albiet for me right now, not the best way. Also, after my testing in red leeches, I am inclined to go and test with the other blood critter variations to see if there is one better suited to my skill.
They are, however, no longer the popular way to train empathy.

Since I was in Muspar'i, I decided to walk the old haunt of red leeches. Walked the loop for 30 minutes and end results were:

First aid - Savant - Stayed Mind Locked, but I am on a wall rank.
Empathy - Master - Started at Conc, and then bounced between ponder and muddled, non wall rank
Mech - Mid-Expert- Pondering, non wall rank.

Had a non-empath go in who is survival & Lore secondary, 12 leeches later the results:

Skilled Ardent in First Aid and Skinning, Mindlocked both skills.
Mech Lore, just shy of expert, pondering

I'll test the blacks later on today when I'm not sidetracked.

oh, happy days! I am glad to know I'll be able to train with blood critters for a long time yet. I've never, ever had to keep pet bleeders to train FA, and it's great to know I won't have to start!

Interesting... Do you think empaths can learn skinning, instead of empathy, if they hold a knife while removing?

In the 25-40 minutes I get to play each day I don't have time to wait <flail>

Anyways, no on the skinning.

As far as the pit goes...teaches FA and Mech quite well still. In Expert ranks of Empathy, after about 30 minutes or so of scripting I got up to concentrating, but my mind absorbs pretty decently so it never went abouve that.

Honestly, I find my perc health script works pretty darn good last time I ran it a month or so ago...

I'm heading back to Shard, myself. Spend my limited time down there, at least I get a bit more bang for my buck.

yea i went to try leeches too...i wasnt in red that long but i didnt get above thoughtful in empathy. black leeches got me to perplexed (outstanding savant in empathy) but it took longer than it takes in crossings plus i ended up dying and getting stuck in the pit hehe definately not worth it compared to perc health / healing and nobody is there so its pretty boring. locked my FA and didnt get my mech past pondering.

Once you are able to manipulate..DO IT! A lot. Let at least two dance with you if you can handle two, then manipulate the third one that comes in, then the fourth one that comes, etc.
Even better if you have GS. Don't let it guard you until you have to. (When concentration gets too low to manipulate anymore.) Percieve health then, a few times, with two in melee with you, and hopefully the other two are battling the ones on you.

Ok I went back to the leech pits too, and heres what I found out:

First Aid: competent ardent For the most part, it stayed mindlocked
Empathy: competent adept Stayed pondering or muddled at best.
Mechanical Lore: Worked it really well, but I found not worth it
experienced practitioner

So basically if I wasn't so heavy into trying to get Empathy right now, I would stay there, its still very viable to learn Mech and First Aid from, and if you still have your lovely Leech pit scripts, you'll do well. For some reason mine wouldn't work, I think its because its so old its still got some stuff saying "Transference checks" In it.
