I'm a boxpopper, so it goes without saying that I visit healers often. So I was wondering... what do you guys consider a good tip?
I realize I'm setting myself up for disaster here, but I feel like if I'm gonna be tipping, I should be doing it well. :)

hehe...I think you'll get a wide spectrum of answers from this, so get a drink and relax before settlin into read them all...:P
For me, I think a 'respecatble' tip is one that shows your appreciation for the empath and the benifit of what they are doing. With you, I would seek out empaths that you know like boxes too, maybe tip them a couple if they'll sit and heal with you.
Personally, I've always liked getting cebi and hisan, go get 1/2 dozen of each and tip them a bag of them (or one of each if you don't just sit there with an empath).
Monetarily, I think that it depends on the severity of your wounds of course (like if they snap you from the jaws of death, give them 25-50% of what you have on you! You'd have lost a lot if they weren't there, and they saved the experience from the death and favor-replacement), but I think in the 5-10% of what you make is reasonable. Make a plat, tip a gold. Make 5 plat, tip 5 gold.
Personally, the folks that are making a ton, and tip you the little jasper or crystal after you heal their broken and battered body, I think to myself "Well, thanks buddy, but if you need the coin that bad, maybe you'd better keep that too.".
So, in a nutshell, it doesn't have to be coin, sometimes other things are niftier. And, you don't have to give away everything, but don't be stingy. Even if an empath doesn't pull you from the brink of death now, the good karma you get from tipping well now will come back to you down the road...:P

I feel the tips I recieve should reflect a mix of the wound severity & level of the hunter. Like kythryn said, I get irked when adanf hunters tip me a small diopside, but I don't mind it as much if a novice barbarian from goblins gives me one.
Really, I find being over generous with your empaths pays off in the end. The people who tip me to the point of embarassment also stick in my memory, and when I hear someone calling for help I jump to take care of them. Just ask Ainandil or Valkri, two of my recent benefactors <hum>
You can tip too little, but you can never tip too much!

I'd think level to an extent. At some point a broken arm is a broken arm is a broken arm. I'm not going to really tip extra for having it healed just because I can hunt Malchata instead of Adan'f. Granted I do tip for services like 'saving me from certain death' 'regrowing all four of my limbs in a speedy fashion' 'prompt and courteous service in general'.
p.s. Saving me from Certain Death does tend to increase the tip a lot

<<At some point a broken arm is a broken arm is a broken arm>>
Also take into account the circle of the empath though. For a level 10 empath a broken arm is a much bigger thing than for a circle 30 empath.
I do think that say a lun'shele hunter should tip much better than a rock troll hunter, but I also think it should only be to an extent. I dont think we should expect the celpez hunter to tip 5 plat for an overall general heal just because they hunt at a high level, just as we shouldnt really expect the rock troll hunter to tip 1 plat for the same kind of healing just because they could easily make that much in gems/skins/boxes/coins each time they go hunting.
It goes the other way as well. A rock troll hunter shouldnt offer a single tiny diopside when he can afford to give more. Just as if someone who I knew hunted adan'f or celpez offered me a single dio I'd probably laugh at them and tell them to keep it if they need coin that badly.
Really the only thing I can really say is use your best judgement when tiping your empath. You have the will to tip well, I think you'll make the right choice.

As far as my two cents go....
theifs and Thievs steal, hunters hunt, empaths heal. Empaths don't have any good way to make money right now other than to heal, and it's a tiring process. If you look at it from an IC perspective you'll probably hear us scream here and there in agony as we take your wounds. If you look at it OOC the minimum involved is 5-10 minutes in healing ourselves, obviously more for more wounds. While it is true that a broken arm is a broken arm is a broken arm, I have never seen an empath demand payment of a set amount, so most people tip pretty poorly. If I sit down and heal for 8 hours, without taking breaks, I've made between 8-10 gold. I'm sure there are empaths who get tipped more, don't know why, but I'm sure they're out there.
As an example of how you can never over-tip (at least with me). Last night I was healing a fella who was playing around with a couple friends, generally sparing. I didn't ask for anything for my services, since I know them and they've recovered my memories more than once. However, he did tip me, a pretty decent tip. That will continue the circle of healing and keep me very happy.
Probably the biggest 'tip' you can give is to not get whiney when people don't want to heal. Empaths need a break too, espically IC it's hard and tiring to heal for long periods without stopping. I for one am 100 times more likely to heal you (even if I was on 'break') if you don't get whiney.

A little off topic here, but I have noticed that there are MANY times when either I (as another character) come in for a heal or I (as my empath) am in a room and people come in to get healed, and no one responds. I have learned as an empath, that if you say, "I am a bit beat up, could you wait a moment and I will get you if no one else does?" it goes over a little better. It is quite frustrating to be bleeding from a few holes and ask for a heal, only to be completely ignored.
On topic, tipping always depends on how many wounds, how severe, the attitude of the empath, and how cute they are.

Generally if you walk in and let the empaths know that you are leaking from more than 1 spot, they will answer you if they can.

Understandable response, perhaps I should have mentioned something. If the person is diseased, poisoned, has acid, or bleeders, I step in, on break or not.

Who are you, so I can put you on my 'best empath friend' list? <grins>
Generally, most empaths are great to my characters. There have been a few times, however, that I have felt ignored. Although I also notice that when a 'true' novice is left alone, or a few of them are in a room without an older empath, they kind of don't know what to do and that doesn't help any.
All-in-all, I think empaths are way undertipped, although I would hate if a system came along that took money or gems from you, or made a tab. Tipping is tipping, and until the empath career comes along, I think it should stay. If there is a general 'doctor' career in DR2, I think it would be a different story.

Eh, I didn't want to bring that up, but that happens to my newest character a lot, too, and it grates me to no end. There are times when some empaths are just "taking five" and that's cool; I don't remember reading anywhere in the rules that an empath has to sit there and tend to others every waking second of gameplay with no regard to their own personal enjoyment. But to just... like... blatantly ignore someone who comes in asking for help? There's no reason for that. And I'm not going to just sit there and ask and ask and ask, because then everyone's annoyed, and we end up with thumps and zaps and unhappy faces and nothing gets accomplished anyway.
Anyway, on topic, I've started putting together cambrinth and non-foragable herb packages as tips, and I've gotten some pretty positive responses.

And I have a really hard time saying, "No" when I'm asked. I don't ignore people, but I really, really, wish those Empath On/Off Duty buttons would flash or something on their own either all the time, or when we did something like gaze at them (something we can do when we are in RT).
There are times, when I am healing in the guild, and I have a full class, that I don't -want- to leave and go elsewhere to practice other skills.
My teaching skills are so far below where many empath's are because I spent so many years -out- of the guild, and giving up a full class hurts.
I will still step in and help if someone is dying, diseased, or something else where the other empaths there can't help, but it would be nice if those people who have 3 small scratches could see that I'm off duty without having to LOOK at me, and realize that I do have skills I have to train if I am to continue advancing within the guild.
I'm not a fluffy empath, and I always make sure the button is at the top when I'm there, so I know it's just they don't LOOK.
I'm to the point, that I don't care about tips. Not that I think we shouldn't get them...just I look at healing as charity work. I don't have to do it to circle. When I heal I am healing for the sake of helping people. If they tip me, I'm pleasantly surprised and if they don't, well, it's charity...I don't get mad anymore. Heck, my black list is only about 5 people long...and that's people that were just complete asses to me.
At this point though, with the skills it looks like I'm going to have to backtrain, I am the most ecstatic with scrapeable skins, and boxes I can disarm/pick.
Just some of my random thoughts....

I agree. It would be nice if the On/Off duty button were more than just fluff. Too bad it doesn't automatically make you a different color or something if you are 'Off'...
>I'm not a fluffy empath, and I always make sure the button is at the top when I'm there, so I know it's just they don't LOOK.
I just think there is a lack of communication. Sure, you don't have to say anything if you don't want to, but I have always found it helpful (and people seem to like it) if I say 'I am not big enough' or 'I am too beat up' or 'I will get you after so-and-so if no one else does.' It just gives them a bit of a relaxing feeling to know you are actually listening.

It all depends on how people treat you. I used to have about 4 or 5 on my black list back in the day before I lost my hard drive, but now I have one. If they can't tip me, and they say thank you or hug me or apologize for not being able to tip, I don't care. Even if they are decked out in 150 plat worth of fluff, if they say they can't, I generally take it in good faith. If they get mad because I am too slow, or they were not 'next', or they don't say thank you, I generally look out for them. Too many times, and I put them on the list.
>At this point though, with the skills it looks like I'm going to have to backtrain, I am the most ecstatic with scrapeable skins, and boxes I can disarm/pick.
I have always thought boxes are good tips, it is just hard to find a good level. Most empaths seem to take goblins happily, but who knows if they aren't up on the gargoyle level or not? That is the tough thing.

It does help a little to turn off title and profession. Not complete solution, but it does help. Even people who know me as an empath will often (not always) recognize I'm doing my own thing when my title and prof are off.

I was just rambling about people that come in and whisper to me without looking at me. I recommend always LOOKing at the empaths, because even if they don't use the button, just looking at them will give you some kind of idea on how wounded they are and if they can even take anymore wounds before you ask them to heal you.
I always try to respond some way when people come in and speak aloud, if no one else responds/touches them within about 20-30 seconds.
>It all depends on how people treat you.
Oh, I wasn't complaining at all, sorry if it came across that way. I enjoy my 'charity work'. :-)

A few thoughts:
Boxes: Love 'em, all shapes, sizes, and difficulties. The harder the box, the more money inside ;)
I always try and respond when people ask to be healed. But in addition to empaths being more conscientious in letting patients know there might be a backlog, patients in turn need to be considerate of the truly massive amount of scroll that a healing empath sees in a busy healing room. In addition to the constant flurry of healing commands, spell-casting commands, health's and look's that an on-duty empath is giving, there's all the other messaging from other players to wade through. So sometimes when an empath doesn't respond, it's literally because he or she didn't 'hear' you. Also I find that the players who storm out after thinking they were ignored tend to do so after a relatively short wait. Have a little patience and let the healers reach a point where they can catch their breath before judging them mute.
I'll throw in one pet peeve I have: patients who wear cloaks that hide their wounds. I find this really annoying as the absolute first thing I do before healing someone is LOOK at them to see how severe their wounds are. Firstly, LOOK helps me quickly determine if the patient needs emergency attention, and where (the look wound description and bleeder list is much more visually digestible than the familiar window wound display). Secondly, it lets me judge whether I have room on my own body to take the patients' wounds without killing myself, before I start taking them. So any non-empaths out there who might be reading this thread, do your friendly neighborhood empath a favor and open up that cloak before you ask for healing.

Xoine,
I did not mean to make that sound like I was rambling at you personally. I was just saying it in ways for others information, on my thoughts. I think what you do is great, people that do it for charity are amazing. But I still think people should offer and at least try and show appreciation other than, "Thaynkz dewd" and runs off. To me, even those times when people would offer me a bent copper ring or a rat pelt, because they were novices, that was awesome, basically giving all they could. So if people offer, that is fine, if people can only hug and run, that is fine, just treat your empaths good, dangit! (again, not directed at you, Xoine :-) I know you treat your empaths good, hehe)

I completely agree with that, people who hide their wounds should tip much much more, since it can be more of a risk to us. <grin>

Xoine is my empath, silly one. But yeah, my other characters are typically very patient and generous...I only have 2 that aren't...but then, they rarely need healing and it's not their nature to be 'nice'...and when they do need healing, they have very specific empaths that they allow to touch them. They still tip well though, even if they don't like people touching them.

>I'm a boxpopper, so it goes without saying that I visit healers often. So I was wondering... what do you guys consider a good tip?
One thing I used to love doing was hanging out with the boxpoppers and healing 'em as they work. Haven't done that in forever.
Hmmm, favorite tips, boxes (all levels, if I can't pop it, I'll have it popped so I get all the goodies) lockpicks, (all qualities, quite honestly) scar herbs, even odd munchies and whatnot. From novices, I love getting something like a cup of coffee or those wonderful gooey chocolate brownies. <g> Free, but they show thought. I hate getting coin, especially in Haven. Means I have to get off my spreading backside and go run to the bank, probably loosing my class in the meanwhile.
Also, other nice 'tips' from younger folks can be listening to me babble on in class for a while, sit and chat while I heal up, or just a sincere thank you. From the older folks, sparklies are nice, the more the better. <G> No, really, I know what a run through Adan'f makes someone ... I've done it. For the real older folks, please, please cram 'em in a pouch or ask me for one. Even if you're only tipping a handful of diopsides it makes my life a lot easier and it looks a lot nicer.
Generally, 10% or thereabouts is a good aim. Thoughtful tips, however, are always a big plus. Sitting and talking and either teaching or listening is also something I really appreciate. I get bored silly healing back up and company always makes me a much happier critter.

Re: It's not just a city in China on 01/02/2004 01:03 PM CST
My personal feeling is, and this is from a hunter's perspective, I think a hunter should give an equivalent of half of what they made the hunt they were just on.
<<How can I tell what half is?>>
Keep two gem pouches. One for the next empath that will heal you and the other one for yourself (or do what I do and keep 3 or 4 pouches of gems). During your hunts, pop a gem in that particular pouch and forget about till you need a heal. If you are hunting over 30 circle critters, then you will average at least a couple of gems from every critter. Keep one for yourself and the other for the empath pouch.
Next time you go for a healing, give that pouch to the empath that healed.
<<But what if that pouch get's to be over a plat worth>>
Then that empath would be very appreciative.
Also, and I've recommended this in the past, get a large package and fill it with a few items of food or magical items or even cards and put the gem pouch in that package and give that to the empath. Maybe add a lockpick or cebi root/his salve as well.
50% is alot if you are under 30, but over that, it's diffinately reasonable. If you don't want to pay that much, there always the autopuff. But if you're asking for recommendations, I would give AT LEAST 50%. I think 10-20 is to little for the work you empaths do in my humble opinion.
Lastly, I feel the ONLY reason MOST hunters give only ONE gem is because they were taught that. They see older hunters giving one gem, so they assume this is acceptable. Most empaths are too gratious to say anything. But I feel youngin's need to be taught early that being generous to their empaths is not only acceptable, but should be expected.
Also let me say that giving big tips for big wounds is ok, but I would LOVE for hunters to give big tips even if they only have scars. If we, as hunters, can get multi plat boxes from small critters on rare occasions, we should do the same for empaths and tip them big when you can, for small wounds. It would really make your day.

Here is just a bit of an add-on to what Woodcubb said. I hunt in Theren quite a bit and it is tough for me to find an empath quite often, so I use the auto-puff quite often. Generally, I build up to over a plat in just a few days of hunting. That may not seem like a lot, but when you usually get only pouches, it is tough when all of your coins go missing. I would much rather use an empath and tip they for what they do, plus some, and keep my bank account looking a bit better. Besides, they work much faster than auto-puffs and some (like Crossing) don't take it all, I don't think.
As for the rest, I have had a shift or two done and they are often a lot of work. If I, or the empath, lack in certain skills, you sometimes have to find someone to link to that gets paid nothing, as far as I know. It takes time between shifts. You can't pop out 50 shifts in a row. I think it is a reasonable way to make money for a guild which, aside from healing for tips, has no other form of making money. They cannot hunt to get boxes and coins and skins, they cannot forge weapons or armors, make master iron lockpicks. I say let them charge what they wish, and if you don't want to pay it, don't. It might stink for many, since people do give it away, but that is a part of a business.

Thank you Raydell.
To add to that, yes, sometimes I have paid for links (money out of my pocket to do that shift for a paying customer), and my CJs (celestial jewelry - stored prediction) cost quite a bit, but if a paying customer with low charisma wants one of my harder shifts, I have to have CJs to do it, or turn them away and not earn the money they were going to pay me.
