Does anyone know what effects retreating? As paladin's are we unable to retreat, or is it just because of wearing plate? It's kind of annoying when I'm done hunting and things keep coming and I can't retreat out of them.

The retreat system as a whole is rather borked right now.
With low stats/skills, it's very difficult to get out of combat. AFAIK part of this is based on armor hindrance, which definitely makes it hard to retreat.
Of course, once you get enough stats/skills to retreat, you'll never have much issue retreating ever again unless extremely imbalanced and/or really losing the fight (aka: when you actually need it).

It does. Not a large one, but it's there.

Fleeing does cause a small soul hit which is usually accompanied by an embarrassing (or entertaining) message about your general cowardice. I wouldn't recommend relying on it for long but in those early circles when there is nobody available to give you a drag out of combat and you just really want to leave the hunting area it comes in very handy. Just remember to spend a bit more time making sure your soul is pristine as a result and dont forget that flee has a major balance and fatigue hit associated with it.
Banner of Truce also offers a nice get out of combat card once you can learn that.

If your balance and position are good, and you aren't getting tagged, take off your chest armor and retreat. A lot of times removing that hinderance can be the difference in those early circles. Failing that, get a pilgrim badge and wander around, the soul boost can offset the Flee penalty.

Re: Pilgrim's Badge (Was: Retreat) on 05/27/2011 05:25 PM CDT
>>Kian: Sorry, what is a Pilgrim's badge?
A pilgrim's badge registers the shrines that you have visited. (It is bonded to the owner, so you can't have someone else visit the shrines for you.)
Paladins and Clerics can pray on a pilgrim's badge to improve their soul state and devotion, respectively. The more shrines on the badge, the better the boost.
