A great ally and fellow Paladin just recently granted me a HUGE gift.... his horse...

Now... I am VERY happy with this.... however... I have no idea how to work with a horse. I bought some of the grooming supplies from the stable. And tried to work with the horse... but again.... I'm clueless. I would like to train my horse to fight along with me... as I think that would be fun... but again.... Im clueless.

Sense a pattern anyone? <chuckle>

If anyone would be willing to give me any advice, who me where to buy the right grooming supplies etc. That way I can get started on this stuff..

Thank you.

Deutz,

To start with, suggest bare minimum riding tack so you don't lose as much WHEN (not if) something happens and you have to get your horse fetched by the Stable Hands and returned to you...minus all tack.

So, a bridle, blanket and saddle, cheapest and plainest you can find. I'm using tack from the Mews out Crossing North Gate.

For Grooming you need:hoof pick, curry comb, soft brush, mane and tail brush. The soft brush can be "turn brush" turned into a stiff brush. Play with the grooming (clean horse with empty hands, with the curry comb in hand, or with the Hoof pick in hand) to see how to properly groom. It wasn't that hard to figure out.. except for learning about turning that blinking brush.. that had me stumped for a bit.

I'm told for "establishing a bond".. having your horse present and scratching it often, keeping it fed and well groomed (see when is needed by studying the horse) and forage up some wild corn for treats.. and tufts of grass to feed it. Toss in some grain from time to time to keep it healthy. Those things seem to help establish the bond, but I've never put in the time with the horse to confirm it.

Redarch has pretty much hit it on the head Deutz. Except I disagree with his belief not to buy good gear for your horse.

Your horse is your buddy, your pal, your fighting companion. Why wouldn't you want to have it geared in nice stuff?

Sure there is a risk to loosing the horse's gear. There is a risk to loosing your weapon everytime you go into combat also. And in a year and a half of owning my horse, I have not lost it's gear once.

I feed my horse Grain most of the time. I keep hay in case I run out of Grain. Sure 2 gold a pop gets expensive. But I want my horse to be fed the best it can be fed.

It took a year and a half, minus 3 months that I was away from DR to form a bond. During that time, I probably had the horse out 4 times a week average, minimum 4 hours per session. Do the math if you want to.

The bond is not easy. But it is possible. Nor is it some kind of "flag" as one person called it. It just takes a heck of alot of work.

Game time this is about 5 Elanthian years I spent. I think that is a reasonable amount of time to form this special, almost mystical bond.

Deutz I'm usually in Crossing. Gweth or come find me if you want some help other than what you have read here and in Red's post.

The fact that it takes over a year to get the first level of bonding on a horse says something is horribly wrong.

If horsemanship was a lore, and someone trained that dilligently on it, they would probably end up with over 200-250 in the skill.

To say you need that much skill for the 'first' ability is rather wacky, in my own opinion.

In my experiences, the horse system is too limited and confusing to be worth the reward. It is extremely vague and there is no real IG or OOC information given to us by GMs that explains anything we need to do.

PAFO is one thing, but this is PANeverKnow.
