Ima ranger and currently train shield, was wondering you guys could help me out. Right now im using an ordinary shield from grendals, has really low hindrance and weight which is real helpful considering im an elothean. But im assuming I should prolly change shields now that im moving up in ranks. So kinnda interested in the basics, what does a shield having better protection actually mean. (Im under the impression that I can block things with a bigger shield that I cant currently with an ordinary shield). Right now I train shield for the ranks, and dont usually hunt anything too horribly difficult, any suggestions on what to use next or move up to would be great, thanks

Oh and one more thing, does wearing a shield actively affect my hindrance, or is that only when its removed?

Kayhla,
For many years, I trained the largest majority of my shield ranks using plain old reaver oval shields and that worked fine for me.
At about 150-170 ranks of shield, and 35+ strength is when I started lugging around tower shield sized shields. Being an Elothean vs my dwarf, you may want to wait a bit longer before going to larger and heavier shields. The whole effect of a larger shield is the higher likelihood that it will simply "be in the right place" to block a hit rather than having to be moved to block. That is the only reason to move up to a larger shield.. assuming your ranks and strength overcome the inherent difficulty of moving a larger shield around to protect yourself.

Shields are good... you might find that even as a ranger, a shield can come in handy sometimes. Anyway..
Ordinary shields from grendels and oval shields from reavers certainly have their advantages... light, and cheap. However, they get destroyed easily by critters that damage shields.
If you want to go for the larger, more durable shields, I'd suggest either the emblazoned tower shield from Theren, or the kite shield from Theren. They both have high-end fairly sturdy construction.. only storebought shield with better is the ironwood buckler sold in Shard, and is less expensive but offers less protection as well.
Theren tower shield has mod hinderance, and kite has fair hinderance.
Also, shields DO hinder you when worn... but not much. They hinder more when held, but the added protection is good enough to overcome that hinderance, if you have enough shield ranks.
I think that the way protection works is that it increases as your shield ranks increase, up to a cap. Low-end protection is how it protects when you have 0 shield ranks, and high-end is when you have enough shield ranks to cap that shield's protection, if that makes sense...
