Well, I thought this was kind of humorous. I went in to Dusk Ogres and got mixed up in a major swarm in a no holy magic room, and we proceeded to break things the old fashion way. 8 dusk ogres and 2 wolf spiders all together, though thankfully only four at a time would be on me. Anyway, I discovered a few things: Dusk Ogres hit significantly harder without cudgels than with cudgels. Always kill wolf spiders first. And finally, that I can survive far more ogres than I thought I was capable of. Though the last two were starting to get some pretty good hits on me, fortunately another adventurer stopped by to help with the last two. the below is just a brief synapsis of how things were going in the exchange of breaking blows:
< Moving well, you step backward and then bash at a dusk ogre. A dusk ogre, beats off the hara with a cudgel lightly damaging its cudgel.
[You're winded, bruised, nimbly balanced and have slight advantage.]

A dusk ogre's cudgel just broke!

[Roundtime 7 sec.]
>

* A dusk ogre pounds at you. Severely damaging your tower shield on its fist, you block with a silver banded tower shield etched with a mongoose curled around a rose.
[You're winded, bruised, nimbly balanced and in very strong position.]

[You're winded, hurt, nimbly balanced and in very strong position.]
The dusk ogre moves into a position to parry.

* A dusk ogre pounds at you. Severely damaging your tower shield on its fist, you partially block with a silver banded tower shield etched with a mongoose curled around a rose. The fist lands a good hit to your chest.
[You're hurt, nimbly balanced and in better position.]

>wear shield
You sling a silver banded tower shield etched with a mongoose curled around a rose over your shoulder.

>get oval shield
You pick up an oval shield.

< Strongly, you step backward and then bash at a dusk ogre. A dusk ogre, partially blocks with an oval shield lightly damaging its cudgel. The hara lands a harmless strike to the ogre's right hand.
[You're winded, bruised, nimbly balanced with no advantage.]

< Moving with grace, you bash a fel-hafted spiked hara at a dusk ogre. Severely damaging its oval shield on your spiked hara, a dusk ogre blocks with an oval shield.
[You're winded, nimbly balanced and in good position.]

[You're winded, nimbly balanced with no advantage.]
A dusk ogre searches the area.

End result:
Tower Shield- Rather scuffed up
Oval shield- 2 destroyed, 1 practically mint

Dusk Ogres: Dead

Rialan: Almost dead :o)

That is very interesting, do Dusk ogres usually break up your shields? I'm wondering what kind of shield ranks you have? I ask because I have two characters who hunt in there and neither of them have broken a shield yet...one on the low end of hunting them, and one that is clearly underhunting <g>

By the way, very good suggestion to kill the spiders first, in a multi situation, they tend to give the harder hits.

Here is the thing, I am a heavy (large) blunt user. what happens when I fight the dusk ogres is that I get parried by their cudgels, or partially parried and land light/good hits. However, due to my weapon, almost everytime they parry, it damages their cudgel (notice even when it says they blocked with their shield, I damaged their cudgel). They *can not* damage my shield with their cudgels, however, once their cudgel breaks, they hit much harder with their fists, which is when they start to damage my shields. If you don't use HB, try useing shatter on them till their cudgel breaks, and then notice the difference. I have 67 ranks in shield, and the tower shield I use is fairly sturdy.

I do wish they would look at the mechanics of that situation..... as in why do several critters become more dangerous disarmed than armed.
