I know there is a planned companion/horses rewrite for sometime in the future. I'm guessing with the 'Thing' and the 'Other Thing' it is probably some way off, plus we have the sky falling down at the moment too (unless it is part of the 'Thing').

Anyway, I have no idea what is planned in the rewrite, but there are a couple of things that I've thought of that I would really love for companions. I'm not touching on horses as all the issues with them have been highlighted elsewhere, although I'd love to be able to ride trails, why else would there be a Trail Rider title?! Just because I own a horse and can run trails? That's just silly!

So companions, I'd love to have more than one. I'd love to see a much wider variety of companions available, perhaps all with slightly different abilities. And if we are going to be restricted to just one at a time I would like a way to release my companion to the wild properly, not just by deliberately trying to lose it which frankly is a horrible thought!

I'm only 5 circles away from being able to get a wolf, something I have looked forward to for a very long time. But it doesn't mean I love my raccoon any less, nor that I relish the thought of dumping her by bringing her out then running trails to lose her.

It would be nice to be able to enlist the aid of companions in hunting and fighting too, wolves especially and maybe some sort of bird of prey like a buzzard or hawk or something.

Anyway, just a few thoughts and suggestions. If anyone knows what is planned or being thought of for companions I'd love to hear more.
