1. I came across this idea when i signal a young wolf to jump into my arms and it stunned me and took me into a prone position. I then thought, why not be able to command the wolf to do that on others via a

signal wolf to jump < creauture/player>

im guessing the rate of success would have to factor into evasion or something....

2. I also thought it would be nice if you could signal wolf to guard items like backpacks or bundles to prevent them from being stolen.

alright, i just got my first wolf companion and i dont want to lose it like all my raccoons, so i have a few questions. do i have to worry about running too far ahead of it? like, if i want to run from crossing to haven, should i just hold him or send him to hunt or will he follow every time? also, im heading back to aesry (which is a big reason i dont want to lose him, cause then i gotta come all the way back to crossing for another)and im worried about losing him on the stairs. should i just send him away when i travel up and down them? even as a baby, can i take it hunting with me without fear of it running away? if there is anything else i need to know, please tell me. thank you very much.

Stairs eat wolves. Many rooms eat wolves for no reason whatsoever, so it is best to always send it away when you are moving. If you are staying in a hunting area, it should be okay, but not necessarily.

Just take every normal action you would normally do, and set the expectation that you will lose the wolf. So basically get ready for the revolving wolf door.

yea, i've actually never had a wolf stay alive passed the baby stage... so i can tell you what not to do but that's it. standing around in one room feeding and petting something has never really been my thing. unless of course that something is Dulcinia.

it's possible to have it out a lot and still have it survive, but you have to be very vigilant. if you're moving rooms and notice it's gone all of a sudden, log out of the game and log back in 30 seconds later or so and call it back. basically pet it every minute to make sure it's still there. send it away when you're running trails or climbing, they're just as easy to lose as raccoons.

they seriously need to fix this with companions. i know its been said a million times already, but ima say it again. i dont understand how it can be so easy to lose. how hard can it be to code? i understand that a shadowservant is a spell, and a familair is linked to a talisman, but how are companions so different? servants, as far as i know, can follow thier owner wherever and if its lost i assume the mage can just cast it again. familiars can run around all day and the mage be elsewhere and it not get lost. just cose the companion to be linked with the ranger. is there something im not seeing here? is it REALLY all THAT hard?

For one, companions arent servants. Familiars are mindless zombies that do their owners bidding and like you said shadowservants are just a spell. But companions are wild critters that choose to stay with us based on how we treat them. I do agree that some rooms should be fixed to allow for a companion friendly enviroment. I keep my wolf out when I hunt. If I have to move rooms I wait for it to follow then pet it as soon as it comes in the room. Also like with my coon I always have "baby" "young wolf" highlighted as I do every tense of whimper and pacing and nervously. I see it everytime it is in the room with me. If I do anything else involving movement, ie climbing, swimming and scouting I make it sleep. If I am traveling I hold it.

I have been a huge proponent of companions, but unfortunately it is likely at the bottom of the barrel for work to get done on it. Companions usually end up as one of our top three items to get fixed or re-worked, and well has been for the last decade with no success. They are a completely forgotten item, so sad, wish it weren't so. There could be some really cool things with them we could do.....if only......

i wasnt referring to the natural things we must do to keep them, the IG reasons ya know. i dont mind feeding, petting, or waiting for him, thats what any ranger with a companion should do, because you are right, they are not slaves, they are loving companions in the wild for the ranger. i was just bitching about the bugs that make us lose them. they need to be fixed, as i know has been said a million times before. sorry if i wasnt clear in my original post.

Since when? I'm pretty sure familiars are aethereal spirits that take the form of an animal. Just because we have to tell them to do everything OOC, doesn't mean that they are IC zombies. My raven talks back to me, and my piglet teases me for being a flirt. They aren't zombies just because not many people RP them as seperate entities.

So I got a baby wolf and hope he becomes a big wolf.

I need to know all there is about wolves. How much tracking and animal lore will I need to track my wolf?

How long will it take for him to grow? I've got between ten and twenty hours invested, anything to speed it up?

I know not to feed rotten meat and not take him on trails. What else?

Pretty much dont move at all while he is with you - if its not a direction on the compass, dont do it.

I had 5 wolves before I kept one long enough to have it age to young - after the 4th I wrote a feeding script and just let it run all night (after playing & w/ sleep mode engaged) for a few nights. Got real tired of wasting time with known bugs and all that -

That would probably get a warning these days (because companions are such a huge benefit, right?).

Good luck raising the thing though. There are random areas all over the game that eat companions, even those you can just walk right into with a standard move. It's an obstacle course, and losing is no fun.

When you do eventually get it to young, you should probably only call it when you want to track it or have it deliver something. Or you can go all the way to full-grown, which is not much different, but it will randomly search the area on occasion and might pull people out of hiding.

Either way, it seems to take several RL days of actual time spent with the things before they age.

Congrats on your new wolf! If you want some tips head over to Elanthipedia.com and search for Companions Do's and Don'ts. Good tips there. As for growing it, just keep it out as much as you can--it only grows while it is in game.

And you can do lots of things with your wolf, but be sure to keep track of it. Baby wolves espicially tend to get distracted by bugs and don't always follow you so just be careful---like you would if you had a real one ok?

Tracking, I don't know exactly what you need to get to tracking them but when you are able to track them (have the necessary scouting ranks) be aware that after you track the wolf, wait for 80 seconds at the very least and then type track again. Lots of times you won't find it, lose the trail and such. Keep typing track unless you actually see your wolf come back or have done it so much you are sure you have failed in the track (you will fail a lot), then CALL the wolf back--whistle for it. Otherwise you rise losing the wolf. If necessary, log out and come back and then whistle for it.

Hopes this helps a bit.

well I lost yet another wolf, apparently baby wolves don't follow supposed, although I have had personal experience with one following my ten times as far.

Apparently to raise a wolf from a baby I either need to hunt somewhere I can sit in the same room for hours, I personally don't know of any places this is conceivably realistic. Or act like a non dancing young empath who sits in one spot and folds and forages and reads a compedium for hours.

Seriously I have no more interest in wasting more time running up to crossings yet again and starting at zero so I can play waste more hours messing around with something that never seems to grow up and does nothing for me other than role play. If that is the case I might just as well use action verbs to pretend I have a companion I would actually choose.

I know of several Rangers who have wolves who are adult and never seem to go senile or whatever, I also know of several Rangers who have babies that never seem to grow and still others who don't even bother because they are so frustrated with the system as it stands.

Could I please get some feedback on Rangers who have successfully had a wolf grow up in the last year or so , real life.

I would also appreciate knowing if there are going to be any changes to companions in the near , distant future or planned ever.

very frustrated here, I mean War Mage fams actually do things right away and there is zero chance really of losing them anymore.

Even Paladin war horses do more, I mean to me watching a baby wolf for hours while not doing anything seems alot like watching grass grow, studying a leaf endlessly for hours , watching a stick float along a river etc.

i feel your pain. believe me, i do. how easy it is to lose companions is horrid. i had lost 9 wolves before i finally got 1 to young. and im sure there are many more rangers out there who lost far more then i. its a damn shame too.

my advice will be the same advice any other ranger will give you, but i shall also add one more thing that might help. first of all, the usual stuff:

ANY time you move even one room, have your wolf jump into your hand.

definately highlight the strings for pacing, whining, etc....alright thats enough. this is what you need to do:

make a script that you run while you sleep IRL. one that will pet and feed your wolf all night. make sure you SLEEP though so you dont gain any afk animal lore exp. this is eventually what i ended up doing. ended up takin bout 5 days or so to get em to young. now, i cant say for sure if this is technically allowed or not, but if any GM would bust you on that for "gaining an IG advantage" even while you arent gainin exp, they should get a new job. companions are wacked out, and need fixed bad. i really doubt you will get in trouble for doing it. here is the script i used:

pet:
match milk You pet your baby wolf
match exit young wolf
match pet Sorry, you may only
match exit companion doesn't belong
match exit shies away from you
pause 3
put pet wolf
matchwait

milk:
match feed You get a
match exit I could not find
match exit What were you referring
match feed You are already holding
match milk Sorry, you may only
pause 3
put get my milk
matchwait

feed:
match wait The baby wolf greedily drinks
match wait It doesn't seem hungry right now
match milk You need to be holding
match exit What were you referring
match exit young wolf
match exit companion doesn't belong
match exit shies away from you
match feed Sorry, you may only
pause 3
put feed my milk to wolf
matchwait

wait:
pause 100
goto pet

exit:
put exit
pause 3
put exit

yeah I feel ya but every since I found out you can track wolves and remain hidden they have in my opinion exceeded every other familiar or pet type mechanicin the realms...I mean come one wolves can find anyone regardless of if they hide or not...you can basically track anyone down in your area without notice...I mean I was already partial to wolves to begin with...but since I found that out...what I'm saying is I know is a pain to raise them but i think the patience pays off in the long run...

Have you actually tried to find someone with a wolf that :
a) Knows you might be after them with hostile intent
b) Has half a clue about game mechanics?

Tracking, even with wolves, is at best a sideshow-esque endeavor.

Try tracking someone down without a wolf. They can keep moving and you'll be in trail for ever.

Until a scouting rewrite and a companion rewrite happens, wolves are only for RP.

you can find dead bodies, get to places fairly quickly in areas like aesry, send items to anyone almost anywhere in the lands fairly quickly, messeges, and even still is very useful in getting the drop on an unsuspecting player...I'd say thats abit more than rp, but hey what do I know..
P.S. theres also quite a few fun practical jokes you ca play on people...I once sent out dozens of engagement rings to random people caused quite a stir....wolves cant be traced...I love them to death

Boy Celitha I also feel the pain. I have lost a lot of wolves too but for various reasons. However, contrary to popular opinion, you WON'T lose your wolf while it is following you if you do the following things, in addition to the nice scripting things you can do already mentioned.

1. Remember, they are BABIES and until you have had your wolf for several months. you should always make sure the wolf follows you.

2. You can do this by simply SLOWING DOWN the rate you travel the roads and paths. Every few rooms, CHECK to make sure the wolf is with you and if it isn't, WAIT for it.

3. An other thing you can do is, if the wolf is sitting and you want to move, signal the wolf to stand. I have found that often the wolf kinda zones out while sitting a while. I nearly lost my wolf in leucs because it was just sitting there, zoning. If I hadn't retracked back to it, it would have left because when I petted it, it calmed down.

4. Be prepared to retrace your steps back to the wolf several times.

These are basic things but I think they bear repeating. I try to remember the capped words in my mind to keep Lucky 3 around.

Last thing, I find it helpful to thing of a baby wolf as a toddler. You wouldn't race around and expect the toddler to keep up or follow you. Kinda the same thing. Yeah, wolves should be able to follow us...but these are babies and haven't learned that. (I really think the game has added this RL condition to the wolf). And remember, even wild wolves lose their babies and young. They snarl a command to stay where it is, and it finds a bee to chase.

Greetings all,

I have recently returned from another long sleep. Before I had left, I had lost my wolf. Upon returning yesterday, I went to Crossings to get another wolf but could not. The pack kept growling at me so I went back and checked all the prereqs and of course I met them all.....circle, animal lore, debts, criminal....etc. Can anybody shed light on this problem for me please? The only thing I can think of is that I had lost a couple of pups right before I left DR. Does that have anything to do with it?

Thanks,

Hide and howl. If you moo you spent too much time in the wild. Howling the pack means you got a good bonus.

If you moo, go find a room that is wilderness. You can check if a room is wilderness by pacing. Pacing like a mountain lion is good, pacing like a trapped animal is not good.
