Speaking of which... My magic average is now higher than my survival average... :-D

More OT, I'd be interested if you could post some tips on training stealing at low-levels in either Lang or Shard...

If money is not an issue, sott + em + stealing cj = crazy fast ranks to 300+. Just a matter of adjusting items as you go. It's doable without cj's too... cj just allows one to steal harder items and thus fill the secondary pool in a shorter run from what I saw.

Its all about weight and appraisal value. With info we've been tracking some smart folk are getting closer to pinning the formula. My general sense is that weight weighs (haha!) more heavily in the formula.
Please add info if you come across more trivial ranks.

http://www.elanthipedia.com/wiki/Stealing_List

Difficulty in shop increases with each item stolen. Multiple items are good, but you need to play around to learn your limit. Difficulty resets ~1hr. At top of my stealing run I echo to log window so as I'm hunting I can see when my timer is getting close to done.

You will get trivial messaging if you cap an item.
You will get messaging if you have filled your secondary pool. Ranger one is something about learning all you can about undermining corrupt order of society.

Lang has very few shops and less info updated, but you can get a good idea what might be a good price/weight range for you to train at off the crossing shops as well.

Take off your armor. Hide if your hiding is higher rank than your stealing. I like to hide even though its not, because of the good hiding/stalking exp I get during the run, even though its slightly hindering my ability.

Enjoy!

Oh, right, spells. WOTP, EM and CS if you like held mana but I usually skip that one. Sott boosts the reflex, not sure how much that's actually helping though I did used to throw it up all the time. Did the CJs for a long time, and I bet they are pretty significant and lower ranks. I'm finding them less helpful at higher ranks with items that teach for huge ranges.

Thanks for all the info!

[Wilds, Pine Needle Path]
A well-trod path leads from a small open gateway in the town wall and heads into a grove of whispering pine. Lean, muscular figures stride by briskly, some carrying longbows, others staves, and all garbed in muted tones of earth and forest. You also see some braided vines, a vine, some braided grass and a journeyman.

You sneak north...

[Wilds, Pine Needle Path]
Birds dart in and out of the dense shrubbery here, calling to one another in cadences that are almost comprehendible. Responses seem to emanate from the wooden structure ahead, a timber building with ornately carved double doors, and seemingly without a roof. You also see a waste bin and a tall wooden figure whose gaze seems to vigilantly scan the surroundings.

Not that it really matters, but all that means is she was in the same room as the person he was stealing from. They may or not be the same.

Reflex supposedly helps you avoid being caught when you fail a steal attempt. However, with 99 reflex, I still get caught quite frequently when I fail a steal.

One other piece of advice I'd throw in is that it's helpful to steal fewer difficult items than a bunch of easy items because there a flat chance of failure on any stealing attempt (snake eyes).

I always did 2 of the hardest item I could succeed in each shop. How many do you normally steal?

It really depends on what items are available in a shop. If there's only one item in a shop that teaches me, I will steal 8-10 if I can. Ideally, I'd like to be stealing 2-3. I just try to squeeze out the most exp I can from each shop.

Another thing worth mentioning (for people new to shoplifting) is that the fine when you get caught is based largely on the appraisal value of the item you're attempting to steal. So if you aren't pawning the items you steal, you should go for heavier items over expensive items when possible.

I've only recently started working it seriously again. Options on mer'kresh are pretty limited, so I use moon mage hacks to steal from ratha and theren once per hour.

My understanding was that Snake Eyes was done away with. I'll see if I an find the post.

I believe the chances of snake eyes were reduced but not eliminated. I sometimes get caught on my first or second grab and then go on to successfully steal six more of an item. I don't know how that could happen without a critical failure of some kind.
