Hmm, I'm a male empath, and thus spend far too much time surrounded by feamles. Good, original names, I can think of a few, Etrina's name is good (plus i just read one of her posts, so it comes to mind) Illici, and Ciaraa. I know there are a ton more, but these seems non-standard but quite good.

My own naming is weak, but it was all I could think of, and I liked the name Max.

When I think of bad names, I also think of misleading names, such as..

Lanaia

Doesn't that name sound feminine?

It's not.

This brings up a point. People assume I'm male all the time. Why? I don't know, because I don't have a name ending in a or e?

Would I assume that's a female? Yes. But based on my own experience I try to remember to look first ;)

Yes. Always look first. I never fix a gender from a name. Or if I do get a certain impression, I never open my mouth before looking to be certain.

A fine lot of names!

My favorite, overall I think, is Saeben Kystrik.

Taf Tartling is the funniest of the lot (certainly IC, I just imagine it for a goofier character).

I do have a few other characters myself (Jansan is my real one however), but I don't think it would be wise for me to list the names considering the immaturity of certain people who do not really care for me. ^_~

I didn't know what most people consider to be a 'bad' name. It's all very subjective and what not. Suppose I could have started a new thread. Oh well.

Hey! I'm not Sore! I don't belong in that list!

Anyways... I had a pet peeve one time. Someone came into the world with the name of Gorthak. People kept asking me if I was related. We are not related.

I haven't seen the name in a long time... but now there's someone else... Skathak.

No, we're not related.

Tamul Satiyona Sorthak
The only and only "Thak".

OOC P.S. I did choose a bad name. Seems that the name "Sorthak" is also the name of a fighter type in a game called "Wing Commander". Interesting factoid I found out.

When we are born into life we do not get to choose our names, as this is done by our parents. This should be the same with DR. We should have to use the name assigned to us by the character manager, no choices, just the first one it picks.

In this way we can ensure that any stupid names are purely the fault of a stupid gm. Because the change would affect all new characters entering the game I think that all the exisiting character should have to have thier name changed in the same mannor.

Now as in life this would not be permanent, perhaps we could earn a nickname from a GM or thier could be a name change merchant/office that would allow us to change our names upon reaching a certain status in the game, perhaps make it premie only and every name would have to be GM approved and Soloman would be banned from the name team :).

Anyway this is the only way i can see a resolution to the problem that seems to be aflicing some people and these boards. Think about what you are asking for before you start yelling about every toom, diick, and haarrry in the realms. Simply stated, unless duplicate names are going to be an option - there will be cleverly descuised duplicates and "stupid" names.

The character manager name generator is for suggestion and ideas ONLY for good reason. One of the suggestions it gave me would have garnered a vulgarity warning had it been used. Besides, it's a game and should be fun. Depriving people of the joy of choosing a name perfect to their RP'd character would lessen enjoyment, especially since the name generator doesn't know or care what your race, sex, or ultimate profession will be.

As is, the choice is available to those who want to use the name generator only; and not for those who don't. Perfect world :)

Exactly - let everyone have thier name, stupid or not, they have to live with it. Unless its its totally off the wall - then soloman eats it anyhow.

Bear in mind that this is an all-text medium and although YOU might think it is "obviously funny", we can't see the smirk on your face or hear the levity on your voice, we can only go by how you phrase it and nothing else, save for an "obvious" disclaimer of some kind.

Take it easy on those who "didn't get it", eh? Next time it might be you. ;-)

I only knew that every name I came up with was already taken, and that's probably the main reason we see bad names. Not because someone was doing it on purpose but because they couldn't think of anything better. Now... if anyone would like to help me hunt down novices who happened to select bad names and email them a large list of good, in genre, untaken names... MY messengers pidgeon's Dunebless nested at MSN, and Dunebless nested at AIM are usually awake 10 hours of every day.

Although I do admit, in the past two weeks I've seen a few novices running around with bad words hidden in their names, whether it was on purpose or not. I don't know.

The latest offender in DR Prime was:

Novice Icyal Ucumtwit

Perhaps I just have a dirty mind... or maybe it was overexposure from all those millions of spammed dirty emails I've found in my inbox for years now... who knows?

oh and when you do find people with bad names, usually assisting on it works better than just reporting it. :) Then you get to explain in detail exactly why it's a bad name to the awake GM.

Also, the only reason there is an apparent name shortage in DR is because people who happen to know this medieval stuff haven't made a site of suitable names for DR yet! Volunteers? I can do some of the names part, organization, and a few graphics.

GMs are very capable of copy/pasting your skills from one person to another.

That's how they test a lot of systems, if you remember.

I had my fifth circle Paladin (Godfist) changed that way. I had to reroll (into Pureblade, yay!), choose my looks, and then had Godfist's information pasted onto Pureblade.

Granted, I doubt GMs can just do this all through the day, and there has to be things to report and reasons to do it beyond 'my name sucks!', but it is possible.

Actually I already have a massive medieval name base, it's from a research paper, a friend of a friend of a friend did who was this buddy to this guy... I've already started a secondary name base creating elven names from Elven words, using DR flowers, umm and references.

I was thinking of setting up a website that GM's and Mentor's could refer people too. Or simply having a small group of players email the whole thing to newbies in need. Your welcome to add to it if you want. I was sort of planning on having categories of names like the true medieval ones from my information, one name list including flora and fauna with prefixes and suffixes, another list for barbaric-sounding names, elven names like silverleaf, Gamgweth and other DR language-based names with their meanings right next to them, trader names like Sapphirestone, traditional names that come from medieval times (I could compile that myself) not on the list I have already.

Although I distinctly do not like the idea of hand-coding an entire site... and don't have the software to do otherwise.
