I like the one named after the kiddie, date rape drug "Exctasy" (or any similar spelling.)

It seems the standards bar was somehow lowered with the new naming purge/fix.

I'm sure his brother "Driver" will be better at tree climbing grin

I saw Gooseman. I guess that's not bad, didn't bother Pep. I just started spouting lines from Top Gun though. But in reality a name never kills my joy of playing. I just laugh and make note.

It was a description of mental state and pleasure LONG before it was the name of a drug. The drug is the last thing (if at all) that comes to my mind when seeing that word unless it is placed in a context that implies the drug is being referred to.

Then I feel I am safe in assuming that you have never lost a friend to addiction to this drug. Consider yourself fortunate that you have not had the experiences necessary to cause you to reference the word in any context other than its traditional sense.

Considering the escalating predilection toward misusing the English language that I have observed in the current teenage generation (and preceding generations, no slander intended) I felt safe in proposing that the name may have been intended, or potentially construed, as a reference to the amphetamine. Having lost many friends to various addictions I felt it worth my time to speak to the negative connontations associated with the word.

Your definition is valid, however, I feel it would be naive to assume the word was brought into the game environment as a reference to a euphoric state.

My random thought is that the player was probably referring to the euphoric state. There are plenty of people who feel like they should name themselves after a sexual thought, reference, or feeling because they think it makes them more attractive or intriguing. No naivete there, just, um, a preponderance towards frolicing.

Or they could have simply been referring to a feeling of total joy brought on by playing this game. Who knows?

Yeah, and I get offended everytime someone mentions the word "red" because you see a good friend of mine from elementry, junior high and high school died when a guy ran a "red" light.

There is such a thing as being overly pc or being overly sensitive. btw my friend did actually get killed because some fool ran a red light. But I'm not about to get all bent everytime someone mentions red, or lights or camaros.

Or if someone says that their favorite color is red, or that they love camaros...yeah Dennis Miller had it right when he ranted about people being to sensitive and PC.

Interesting role model choice. I'm anxiously awaiting the Elmer Fudd logic in your next response.

But more to the point, I don't recall getting "bent out of shape" over anything. I was responding to a criticism of a naming choice and providing details as to why I felt it was inappropriate. Your Dennis Miller inspired retort would seem to be a more likely candidate for an example of overreaction.

Interesting comparison as well. Traffic signals = illegal drugs. You should take this point to the people who recently argued on these boards that the suggestion someone should "have a drink and get over it" was insensitive to alcoholics.

I am likely to be one of the most desensitized people you will ever encounter. However, I dislike flippant remarks regarding some very specific subjects.

How did this thread go from names...to OMG drugs are bad...mmmmmkay?

People are oversensitive about anything in America (majority of DR players, I believe). So Dennis said some stuff. Rush says stuff to. OMG so does 90% of people who have an opinion about anything. Anyway, it was a stupid name, and since nothing gets done about those, cause the GM's have too much to handle, is there really a point? Anyway...my ramblings on something as miniscule as a name turned drug thread.

Not gonna debate his looks. I am a guy, got nothing against the guy, he seems like a great guy. Perhaps I can make it to Simucon and bring him a couple cases of Dublin DP. Might get a nice bribe in with that.

I think the misconception is that somehow seeing a name make it into the game means we're ignoring it or aren't looking for them to make them change it.

The name has long since been removed from the character.

I still think the one I saw last week was worse.

"Dogfart"

Having owned dogs that one just brought back vivid memories of my boxers tooting away while I attempted to watch a movie. ::mutters::

Btw never, ever...allow a dog to get into a baby's diaper changing bag. My boxers were smart enough to unzip said bag and then get the vasoline intensive care out. Removing the lid and eating said vasoline. Do you know what that does to a dogs bowels???

My generation was very much into X-tasy. And I can safely say when I see the name Ecstasy or any shape or form of it the images that come to mind are: furry paddles, handcuffs, chocolate covered cherries, Godiva chocolate, the first sip of coke in the morning, moans, groans, twins, and <censored>, <censored>, and <definitely censored>.

The fact that it is a drug is an afterthought. However, I am with you in your quest to rid of the name. I oppose bad names!

I lost two grand parents to cigarette smoking. Should I be offended if I met someone named Smokey(by the way the name of an real life uncle)? Should I be offended by smoking in DR? Well maybe, but I don't think I should come onto the boards to explain that because of my real life history that players or DR should act a differant way. It would be more than sufficient to say that "I find Extasy(or any spelling variation) to be a none to suble drug referance and both OOC and out of place for a family game."

since Elanthia has no knowledge of the Greek gods a name like Poseidon should be just as acceptable as Zeus...

why?

PlayerX-"Ahhh Zeus the king of the gods"
OOC reference is blatant here, we know of the greek gods but Elanthians dont

prolly why a name like that is allowed

but thats just my 2 lirum

Well...sadly enough, I saw Father Guido Sarducci in game a while back...and for the heck of it tried to roll up Roseanne Rosanna-Danna to see what would happen. I made it just outside the CM and got sent back for being 'Out of Genre'.

I wish they were always that astute.

I think what amuses me more is that that name doesnt bother me, but a warmcuddle snugglebunny would. lol. Just my anti-fluff and huggy name peave coming out.

You saw someone named Rohypnol, Or you complaining the ruffles name is to close to ruffies. Or perhaps a DDH.

I know many of us are older now but we should still at least know what the drugs are and do, if for no other reason than to be able to warn our children of them and their dangers.

Exctasy is kind of the designer LSD/methamphetamine combine properties of both with some very disturbing evidence of causing early parkinsons. Ruffies/Rohypnol and DDH are the date rape drugs.
