Hey, everyone I was just wondering, I am a thife to be and was hoping for some insight on if I should use me or le I have a foraged impact katar is that good for backstabing and such?

Anyhow... MEs hit harder then LE, but always suffer a penalty. I think you'll find the thief community fairly divided on which is better, so go with your personal preference.
DISCLAIMER: THIS POSTER ISN'T A THIEF AND JUST KNOWS SOME OF THEM, AND HASN'T PERSONALLY BEEN ONE IN MANY MANY YEARS AND MAY IN FACT BE AS WRONG AS J'LO.

Really, the best bet is train both. ME is currently "better" in my opinion (get more one shot kills with same skill levels) but I think once the damage model is redone and backstab toned down a bit I think LE will become a better option than it is now. Also I think I remember Z sayin that he wanted LE to be the best backstabbing weapon (I could be wrong though, was a while ago)
But ya like I said, never know when something is going to get nerfed/changed so just train both.

This. I wish I had this advice when I started training.

Training LE is such a pain early as the damage output sucks. Get your agility up to help this along. BS from the beginning on louts in Crossings or whatever is equivalent in Haven. The combination of LE + BS should allow for much heavier hits even that early. Find a briquet if you have the money, or get a Mekage short sword if you don't. The app the same, but the briquet is much harder to break. The moderate puncture on this weapon will make a big difference early on.
ME is much easier to train, so a forged sabre or scim with heavy puncture/slice would do fine. Obviously BSing with a scim doesn't work (unless you use a S'kra scim), but since the weight is higher, it tends to get more damage early on, and therefore teaches a little better.

For a thief I'd do cloth/leather over LC, but it's not a bad choice (although not as good as before the stealth hindrance rewrite).
For ranged I would either say LX, SB or LT if you want to be different (Thieves get a bonus to the number of throwing blades they can throw at a time and LT helps with dirt). LX for its power and shield compatibility (LT works for that too), SB for machine gunning with capped bows/arrows and because shield isn't as important when you're relying on stealth.

Is nice and fun and all, but you can't snipe with thrown. Something to consider.
(Who needs sniping when you can use LT to SET PEOPLE ON FIRE, right?)
Personally my vote is for LX + Shield. Sugarsnout knows what he's about.

If you going to go with LX get a large shield not a small arm worn one. The reason to use a one handed range is so you can hold something in your off hand.

There are lower load times with LX vs HX, and the roundtime reductions for LX are based off more thiefly stats than the roundtime reductions for HX. LXs weigh less, also.
Having said that, I use LX and hold a large shield in my left hand when hunting.

Re: Le or Me? on 10/06/2008 09:22 AM CDT
LE is definitely better for BSing. The difference is the heavy puncture ME vs. the mod puncture (if yer lucky) or fair puncture for LE. A heavy puncture ME sets you back 8-10 plat. A mod puncture LE (that doesn't break easily) sets you back alot more. At young levels you tend to put more into strength then agility, just to reduce yer encumbrance and lower your RT. This being the case, mod puncture is the best early way to go. I have heard that fair puncture/excellently balanced LEs are better with higher agility, but I used both a kastneth and briquet side by side with 36 in str and 42 in agi and could see no difference. Since I plan on training my strength up to 40, this might put me in a different class then most thieves, who travel light and train strength minimally.

What is the best forged LE around at the moment? I have heard about these briquets but not seen one. I have a mod puncture short sword and a fair puncture well balanced one, but I was wondering whether it would be possible to get something else. I know nothing about forging, but I still have a glaes shard from when I did Corik's quest, along with a couple of those niniam and lumium fragments. Any idea what kind of weapon could be made with those?

You pretty much have the best "standard" forged LE. They just tend to be very flimsy.
If that is the Glaes that can be forged, it's your best bet. You can get a stiletto from it that might get heavy puncture, although I can't verify that.
On a side note, if it is the type that can be forged, I will buy it from you, if you want the plats instead.

I'll give you a sweet deal for that shard, btw. Special metal LEs aren't really worth it, but if you go that route, have it made into a short sword. It'll app similar to a briquet.
Or, you can sell me the shard, use the plats to buy yourself a briquet, and still have about 2k left over.
If you want ideas for what to do with it, my AIM is MizoDR.

<<for the record, when ME backstabbing was released, it was stated LE would always be superior to ME backstabbing>>
i can't remember a time when you couldn't use ME to stab.
you certainly could back as far as 1996, I used to use a vicious rapier from dirge. <this was pre-forging>.
of course, back then you used to get the "toe-stub" thing regardless of BS skill, and you couldn't BS other PCs <"over my dead corpse - gonk">

<<Go ahead and tell about the time that you backstabbed someone with a HE>>
i never did. although s'kra, i didn't put as many TDPs into strength <which was the factor> as did Anrog <a tog>. He is the only PC thief who ever did HE backstab to my knowledge, and after he posted he did it, the ability to do so was taken away. He used a cinquada.
The thugs in undershard used to message that they backstabbed with broadswords, but we were later told that that wasn't a true "backstab".
