I don't understand why sometimes my ambushes are successful while others are failures even though they all hit the same spot and it appears that the degree of the hit is irrelevant in success. I can masterfully land a grazing strike to a targetted part yet fail to position myself to strike a targetted part even though it was an awesome strike which hit said part. Learning has been pretty difficult, my hiding would hit mind lock while my backstab was pondering still, granted backstab is -4 and hiding is -1 how do exp bits get calculated when using ambush? is it based off the first part of the below messaging or the severity of the hit. I can lock my hiding off 1-2 bone wolves yet have to ambush/hide/ambush/hide/etc 12-15 of them in order to get my backstab in high mind states and I can't figure out why.

You manage to position yourself to strike at the bone wolf's back.
The sabre lands a hard hit that pricks the wolf's back (Get your needle work out!), barely stunning it.

You fail to position yourself to strike at the bone wolf's back.
The sabre lands a strong hit that cuts a ragged line across the back, lightly stunning it.

You masterfully position yourself to strike at the bone wolf's back.
The sabre lands a powerful strike that skewers a perfect hole between the shoulder blades (Heart Burn!).

You masterfully position yourself to strike at the bone wolf's back.
The sabre lands a grazing blow to the wolf's back.

You fail to position yourself to strike at the bone wolf's back.
The sabre lands an awesome strike that pokes a clean hole right through the back, narrowly missing vital organs.

There is a Perception versus Stealth contest, and then there is an actual Attack versus Defense contest. Winning the first contest gives you a bonus, but not a guarantee.

Nice double posting about this Sampsnic2.. Since I replied in the stealth folder..I'll say go check there for some of my answer.

The other part would be that I suggest you find a bipedal critter that you can actually backstab and do that.

report: not sure if this is a problem.. but there are two sentinel Kristef's on the streets.

SEND[Abasha] That's not Kristef, that's his evil twin, um... Kristeff. Anyway thanks for the heads up!

Is that the better way to go these days? When I left I could swear I remember ambush teaching backstab better for some reason. Perhaps it was a side effect of my skill (or lack thereof) but back in the day rams and bears and such taught better than duskies. Now I play mostly in swain and snoblins.

What determines if a targeted ambush is successful is a backstab check versus the targets perception. What determines if the shot lands in he right spot is a weapon check against a difficulty based on the targeted area. A successful ambush greatly reduces this difficulty as well.

What I think is the problem in this case is that you have the weapon ranks to hit the targets back nearly all of the time, but don't have the backstab skill to always succeed at the ambush. Without the numbers its hard to know for sure, but try to do some regular targeted attacks against the back and let us know how often those land on the back.

I started in the stealth folder but moved it to backstabbing since it was ambush and backstab learning. Excuse me for trying to place a post in the correct place.

The relative skills are

55 Hiding, 67 backstab and 50 ME.

Maybe I hit the cap on bone wolves for learning backstab well? I would ambush, check exp, rinse and repeat and there were times I would masterfully hit the body part and the mind state wouldn't move at all, then 3 hits later i would fail to hit with a grazing strike and it would go from pondering to concentrating. I guess that's why I'm kind of confused on how exp bits are granted based on ambushing.

Don't mind Sothios, he's still embarassed about the last thread he tried to be a tough guy in.

1) I don't get embarrassed.
2) I still stand by what I said.
3) Unlike SOME people, I don't go around looking for conflicts in the game just for kicks.
4) I still believe most of the folks that replied to me or decided to be snide are immature nitwits.

Indeed you are correct sir, some of our CHARACTERS may be disagreeable or down to brawl at a moment's notice and then some PLAYERS feel the need to belittle and berate people that are genuinely looking for help on the forums.
