IMO the best LE weapon is actually critter dropped. Enough slice damage to ambush slice but still all right on the puncture.

An ivory-hilted jambiya is a light edged melee-ranged weapon.
The ivory-hilted jambiya is well suited for backstabbing.
You are certain that it could do:
fair puncture damage
fair slice damage
poor impact damage
You are certain that the jambiya is reasonably balanced and is fairly suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.
You are certain that the ivory-hilted jambiya is fairly sturdy, and is in pristine condition.
The ivory-hilted jambiya is made with metal.
You are certain that the ivory-hilted jambiya weighs exactly 18 stones.
You are certain that the ivory-hilted jambiya is worth exactly 500 kronars.

I'm going to assume that said critter isn't something a baby thief can really get to?

For reference comparison to the jambiya:

A leaf-blade sword is a light edged melee-ranged weapon.
The leaf-blade sword is well suited for backstabbing.
You are certain that it could do:
fair puncture damage
fair slice damage
poor impact damage
You are certain that the sword is fairly balanced and is poorly suited to gaining extra attack power from your strength.
You are certain that the leaf-blade sword is of average strength, and is in pristine condition.
The leaf-blade sword is made with metal.
The leaf-blade sword feels pretty light.
You are certain that the leaf-blade sword is worth exactly 600 lirums.

The leaf-blade sword is a bit heavier, 28 stones. But far more accessible than the jambiya. The real test is getting a trader with a laaaaarge amount of appraisal to compare the two.

I'd say given that comparison, unless you can get your hands on a jambiya easy, the Leaf-Blade sword is a fair substitute.

Just so you know, Ciressa keeps jambiyas in her give away bag [free] at the Haven Market. She's open on Tues, Thurs and one weekend day usually.
