So it's been over a year since I played my thief, and I've been trying to track down the changes since then, but the forums not being what they are, I'm having a tough time tracking down everything.

Basically, when I left, I could pretty much one/two-hit geni's and I would learn stalking, hiding, weapons and backstab really well. This was right around when the new Khri system was released, and I was still doing alright under that. Life was good.

Now, I cannot get a successful backstab (I hit, but no surprise/exp) and I'm barely learning stealth. Confidence is neutral during this. Stats/skills below.

Hiding: 348
Stalking: 334
Backstab: 267
ME: 213
LE: 190
Agil: 38

I can tear them up just going normal melee on them without any buffs, so I'm kind of confused about my inability to backstab with higher stealths (which are barely moving) and using the different special khri combos to boost either my stealth or attacking ability.

Any suggestions on buffs to use, updates on critter perception/teaching, backstab tweaks would be appreciated. Thanks.

The buff for backstab would be strike. Spar combo too since it contains strike and combos boost their pillar khri.

Your backstab is below 300 which is a good estimate of geni perception. Hide and stalk should be learning ok, you'll have to put up strike or use an LE if you want to pull off a successful backstab.

Agility seems a little low maybe? Your best bet is really just to use strike. Add in some dirt and you'll be able to get them easily. Also it could have been you were just going at night and have recently been hunting during the day.

make sure you don't have leg/arm/hand wounds.. that hurts your balance.. also, your balance affects your success too..

I would suggest using ambush sight/screen to blind the geni, then try it.... I would also suggest, if you can, to use spar + darken + dampen...
